After years of curiosity, my sister and I finally decided to make the trip over to Waitsfield for BBQ. Having perused their menu online, we thought their offerings sounded perfect. All this changed as soon as I we entered the restaurant. The foyer opened up...to a cavernous barn with tables and chairs in the center, and a bar straight ahead. There was no host or hostess to greet us, so we ended up seating ourselves at a table for two, which had a noticeable slant due to the floor which also had a noticeable slant. Being an old building, this was forgivable. After several minutes of waiting, a woman strolled past us and didn't give us a glance or a smile. She returned with two laminated menus that were so dirty and sticky it was obvious they had never been cleaned. She was so aloof and disinterested in serving us, we deliberated whether or not to get up and leave. I wish we had. At this time, there were only two other people in the dining area apart from a party of gentlemen seated near the bar. Another 10 minutes passed before she returned to take our order. I ordered a burger with mac and cheese, and a side of coleslaw (for which they charge extra). My sister ordered nachos, a salad and a sausage appetizer. When the food arrived, (delivered by another server) the nachos were a massive plate of mile high chips with barely any melted cheese to be found. At least they provided a ramekin of sour cream and salsa to help make them palatable. They were also cold. What cheese there was was congealed and some of the chips were a bit too "crispy"..i.e. burned. My sister's smoked andouille sausage appetizer was supposed to come with a side of pickled hot vegetables. I almost laughed when she dropped the plate in front of her with six small, thin slices of sausage with nothing else and promptly disappeared. It took a couple of minutes to flag her back to ask where the rest of the appetizer was. Without any apology she mumbled "they might be out of them" but upon our insistence that she please check, she returned with a small dish of what was supposed to be on the plate to begin with and plunked it down and off she went! My burger was okay and the flavor was good, but for a medium rare, it was really dry and did not arrive hot, but nearly room temperature. The lettuce and tomato were fresh, however. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it a solid 4. However, this was all lost when I tasted the pile of dried out crusty mac and cheese that took up half the plate. I have seldom had such a terrible version of mac and cheese. Dried out and absolutely flavorless except for some faint greasy, smoky aftertaste. I couldn't detect anything that resembled any cheese flavor. What a shame. I was really looking forward to it. This, too, was lukewarm, as if the plate had been sitting on a counter somewhere for a little too long. The best part of the plate was the coleslaw. It was very good. There was no salt and pepper on the table to season your food, which leads me to believe that either the servers forgot to put them out, or the chef is one of these people who believes his/her food doesn't warrant any culinary assistance. That's a no no at any restaurant. Provide S&P for your diners. Not at any time were we asked if we would like a refill for our empty beverage glasses. We also never were asked how our food was. Quite honestly, despite the fact that there were very few diners in place, the server(s) were hiding elsewhere, and behaved as though they were irritated by our presence. I observed other diners receiving the same stiff and at times rude treatment. It's a pity we had such a disappointing experience, especially after driving some distance to patronize them. As BBQ lovers, this restaurant had every opportunity to impress but failed utterly. My suggestion to management is to review your serving staff. Neither of the women last night showed any interest in being there, and were obviously either stressed out or just plain didn't want to be working and made no pretense in hiding it with their customers. The restaurant appeared dirty and unkempt, and the lighting is extremely poor. Neither of us dared to venture to the restrooms. I would assess that this place is tantamount to a "dive bar" with none of the charm. In closing, I also must relate that I was unable to determine whether or not the restaurant is handicapped accessible. The main entrance certainly is not. Unless there is a separate entry, I would say this restaurant is not accessible. Best to call first should you remain determined to go.More

Restaurant a little rough inside. Looks like a happening place for life music especially Saturdays. My husband and I enjoyed ribs and craft beer and were not disappointed. The side dishes were great especially the mac and cheese which was recommended by the waitress. Staff...was helpful and friendly.More

Stopped by for BBQ dinner last week. I am not a huge BBQ fan but was served an outstanding pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw and beans. I would have gone back but we left town the next morning.

Had the catfish and couldn't even eat it, tasted so fishy. Luckily my husband got a combination platter so I ate off that. Cousins beer was good but stay away from the catfish!

While the smokehouse has many options, they are limited on vegan GF ones. That said, they will get creative for you if asked and the kitchen isn’t overwhelmed. Everyone in our party got what they ordered and left full or with leftovers. Good size portions....Dining area is a little dark and loud and right next to a long bar but we were able to hear one another across the table.More

We ordered the special of a pound of wings and a sandwich. The wings were extremely dry, like they had been sitting for hours. The burger was not worth eating. The atmosphere is very rustic. the floor is not level. I would not go back.

We went for a birthday dinner and we were disappointed about the quality of the meat. Had a sampler dish with ribs and chicken. The chicken was dry and the ribs were full of fat. Jalapeno poppers for appetizer were pretty spot-on. Smashed garlic potatoes...were good, too. Tried it once, but will not be returning.More

We make a trip here every year during our stay at SugarBush. They have a simple menu with ribs, chicken and Tex-mex entrees. There's a bar if you want a place to hang out. I remember some pool tables from past trips. They get real...busy on the weekends. The food is good and the prices fair. The place is an old building (converted barn I think) with a rustic feel. A great "Vermont" family place for anyone. Come in your ski clothes, muddy boots or the best clothes you brought...you may feel out of place with the latter. Recommended!More

Great food for all our out of town family and friends who came to VT for my daughter and new son-in-laws wedding. We had the after after party at the smokehouse from 11-1 pm. Quite the spread after the wedding and bonfire. Delicious!

We were looking forward to eating at this restaurant all day, in fact we knew what we wanted to order: their St. Louis Ribs. We have had them here before and they were outstanding. We arrived at the restaurant about 6:30 and were surprised only...one other couple were dining there. Several patrons were at the bar which was understandable since it was Thirsty Thursday and $3 drafts were available. We ordered our beers and our ribs and sides and they arrived promptly. They were of a generous size and looked delicious but looks are deceiving. After sawing away at the ribs for 10 minutes and getting no meat for the effort we gave up and called our server over. The meat on the rigs was red and severely undercooked. This place prides itself on being a local BBQ place with a smoker out front but the kitchen help that night had absolutely no idea how long to cook or smoke a rack of ribs. Mistake #1 was to fire up the smoker too late in the day to do any serious cooking and mistake #2 was serving something like that to paying customers. Our mistake was in accepting the substitute of an unappetizing pile of pulled pork. We should have paid for the beers we consumed and dined elsewhere. Lesson learned. We will probably revisit in a few months, but we will be far more critical next time.More

Recommended by our Inn keeper. It was mostly locals when we went for the Thursday $1 rib night. A wide variety of local craft beers. Excellent ribs with interesting sauces. We ate out on the deck and watched the evening roll in. With our ribs...we enjoyed the home made baked beans and mac and cheese. Mike also said their Wed. night Hamburger Specials is worth a visit. The meal smelled so good I had to try it before I could take a photo. There is live music some evenings at this restaurant.More
