Ya,ya...it is always crowded, you have to wait in line, they don't take checks nor credit cards HOWEVER the very best grinder/sub/hoagie to be had in the state maybe New England. The hot meat sub is addictive. You can call your order in but watching them hand craft your sandwich is part of the magic.

I know . I'm from nj shore - I'm used to a good sub . But my husband turned me into a gils regular. Like once a week ! I always get the tuna - never fishy and always consistent . The cabbage is crunchy and adds exemplary texture. I add banana peppers and oil vinegar mixture- umm. Husband gets... More

We lived in Honolulu when I was pregnant with my first child, l craved Gil's desperately and tried every deli I could find, looking for something similar. Their rolls are amazing, no one else uses shredded cabbage, and the staff move the long lines through with calm efficiency.

The meat is below par quality. Not Boarshead for sure. Prices don't justify the quality. Place needs reorganization to flow the customer thru order to purchasing and out the door.

...and the staff was rude to me. I won't go back. If you are in Rutland and want a quality sandwich I suggest either Panereas or the Coffee Exchange. Both are much higher quality and a better value.

Gills has the best grinders and salads that you can possibly buy in Vermont. I worked there for three years so I know how much effort Kathy the owner puts into the business everyday.

Wonderful subs. Very basic, but extremely fresh. The bread and rolls are baked fresh and they use cabbage instead of lettuce. A bit of a hole in the wall, but well worth the trip! They only take cash!

It's a kind of a go to place when your out for lunch and not sure about what to eat. There isn't many choices here it's Rutland VT they don't even have a Starbucks or a Marriott ( I know I'm a snob ) but it's a decent little place they charge extra on certain toppings for vegetables, little different... This place is a gem. Consistently the best grinder in town, an icon to remember. Delicious as well as practically priced
