Had a great first meal here. Attentive to our gluten free needs. Lot of interesting options. Had a tasty ceviche with good guacamole. Really fantastic risotto. But the best meal was a braised pork dish. Really great flavors in the tender pork and the flavorful marinade, pickled cabbage offering a nice brined respite, and overall an incredibly flavorful meal. And while the price wasn’t low it felt like a good value for a great meal. Recommended!
COVID NOTES: we ate outside with an abundance of caution from the staff taking orders and serving food/drinks. Menus were easy to get on your phone with scannable QR codes.

My mom and I went to Vermont for the day to celebrate my birthday. We ate here on the way home. We sat outside and it was comfortable and quiet. I ordered the turkey sandwich and it was delicious. I loved the cranberry aioli. I substituted the carrot ginger soup for my side and was uncharged, despite the price of the cup of soup being the same/less than the price of the sides (which were included). The server did not mention there was a cost when I asked to substitute. My mom ordered the scallop salad. She said it was well presented, the scallops were tender, and it was a large portion. She also ordered some Parker house rolls, which were delicious. They don’t do anything for birthdays, if that’s important to you. We didn’t mind because the food was tasty and a great value for the portion sizes. Note— the restaurant isn’t visible from the street. It’s sort of an alley across from the large red city hall building. There’s a sign on the gate leading to the park area in the alley. It’s a pretty spot but extra confusing because the address/GPS location is a side street where the restaurant isn’t visible.

In our first trip to downtown Rutland and the Paramount Theater, we stopped at Roots before the concert for dinner and drinks. What a wonderful surprise! One of the best meals we have had ever! The staff was super friendly and helpful. Tre was our server. The cocktails were extra good. I had the scallop salad, it was a wonderful blend of flavors, hubby had to poutine which was soooo flavorful. The only downside is that they close very early on a Saturday night! We so wanted to stop by after the concert for dessert and cocktails, but by 9:15 they were totally shut down. A very kind person came out to talk to us and even offered to see if he could make something to go!!! We did not want to put him out after this kindness so we did not take him up on it, but we are looking forward to returning to Rutland for more concerts and Roots will be our go to spot!! We will just make sure to have dessert before!!

The food and selections were very appealing with reasonable prices. We enjoyed two appetizers - cheese fondue had a nice hint of blue cheese, and the accompanying pita was freshly made, while the Brussel Sprouts had a delicious chili accent and were cooked to perfection. For an entree, we shared a very flavorful salmon special, with chive rice and a miso sauce. The kitchen staff know what they are doing, food is served hot, and the service is attentive and friendly.
We sat at a high top in the bar area, but you can also reserve outdoor tables under a tent. Overall very high quality food, highly recommended.

Roots is a solid 3 the food is good, not great. Maybe I am expecting a lot from a small city. I started my meal with 2 rolls for 2 bucks. Parker house rolls are my favorite. These rolls where nothing special just a yeast roll. For my entree I chose the rib eye cooked medium. The steak is cooked to order and the presentation is nice it has decent flavor and is topped with hand made onion rings. The potato I want to say is baked and then deep fried it seriously lacks flavor or appeal. It July in Vermont jazz those potatoes up. The other side was carrots, these carrots are roasted in a sweet and savory glaze and are very, very good. I do prefer my carrots peeled but the flavor was spot on. I just ordered bananas fosters. Fingers crossed! Yeah it is ok the bananas are ripe, the sauce is nice it is yummy melting the ice cream but all through it are slices dried cranberries or grapes dried not like a few either… trying to hard to fancy a rich flavorful dish up! From start to finish with water as my beverage 52.80 not including the tip. It’s an hour drive for me to get here and I love food. I most likely will never come here again not because it is bad. It’s just not that great. The service was good at peek hours they should think about turning the radio down. So people can hear each other talk. I am here by myself and have watched the other tables around me struggle to hear one and other people have literally moved closer to hear. I do love the concept of farm to table with up scale pricing. Roots just fell short for me.

Recently I returned to Roots for a lunch with my wife about 3 years after our first experience here and this time found the food and the service disappointing. Our calamari appitiser was served promptly and was quite good. Following that good start service and food quality fell apart. Our waiter repeatedly forgot things that we requested such as salid dressing for the salad that had arrived without any dressing. Ketchup for the fries only came after we went into the bar area and requested it. In addition the food that did arrive was uninspired. Flavors were light to nonexistant. I have no intention of returning to this restaurant and will tell others of our disappointment. This place needs better management, a better chief and better training for staff.

New restaurant in Brandon is fantastic!!! My husband and I showed up without a reservation and were able to snag two seats at the bar. I’d be writing this review on the site for River Pub & Grill in Brandon but it’s so new, it doesn’t come up. Excellent beer. Just saying that first since that’s how we started. We ordered the kale salad and the watermelon salad. Between the amazing sundried tomato pesto with the kale, and the grilled watermelon, it would be a tough choice to decide which was the better salad. We loved them both. We both ordered the burger which were hand ground, hand made patties prepared on site. Grilled exactly as ordered. My husband ordered the maple glazed carrots while i had the sweet potato hash. We split half and half. Oh wow. Don’t choose. Order them both. Find this restaurant in Brandon!!

The new location is a huge improvement, although strangers to downtown may have a time finding it. The ambiance is really great now. The menu is broad and appealing, especially for vegetarians. The service is uniformly attentive and helpful. I really like what they do with tofu, both sandwich and entree.

My wife and I were in Vermont to see friends, and we met for dinner here. We were able to eat outside under a tent, which was exactly what we were interested in. The server Morgan Michelle was excellent which made dinner better. I had the hamburger w/goat cheese and pork belly and that was excellent. My wife had the very nice salad. It was just right.

We started with a fabulous fondue made with local cheeses and honey with bread and green apples for dipping. I also had the summer sangria...refreshing.
For dinner we had the pulled pork with blueberry bbq sauce and slaw...I wouldn't normally like Cole slaw, but this was fresh and an excellent pairing. My husband said the same about his peach glazed salmon...he normally dislikes sweet potatoes, but altogether they made the perfect bite.
For dessert I had sauteed bananas with cranberries over ice cream.

We drove in to Rutland and upon the reviews thought we would drop in without a reservation on Columbus day weekend and peak fall foliage! They were full but did offer a table outside under the awning. It was a cool night, we kept our coats on and were grateful to try this place as we have never been and will not likely make it all the way here again. We ordered the ginger carrot soup to start, it was a large bowl of tasty, hot soup. We were thankful to start with it as we waited for the salmon with mango salsa. The entree was also very good. We were thankful to the staff for caring for us; getting us a table and Joe for serving every need promptly. It was worth a big tip!

Delicious food, beautifully plated, served in a quiet park by friendly, knowledgeable server. Leann offered good advice about menu items and adapted to accommodate my food allergies.
The Brussels sprout appetizer is fantastic, as are the homemade fries. The mushroom sandwich is tasty. I think it might make an even better salad with grilled flatbread pieces.

Definitely lived up to its reputation as the best restaurant in Rutland, VT! Ambiance was great, service excellent and food superb with generous portions. Creative cocktails as well, as I ordered their special Roots Rye Rita made with ancho chili liqueur. The meal go off to a good start with the eggplant fries and beet salad. I had heard that scallops were a specialty, but the server said I shouldn't pass up the slow-cooked pork. I'm glad I listened, as it melted in my mouth! My wife enjoyed her portobello sandwich just as much! Don't leave until you've had their giant slice of carrot cake!

I just returned from a vacation near Rutland and discovered Roots. The food was so good that my husband and I ate all our dinners there, 4 nights in a row. We tried something different each time and were never disappointed. The crispy pork belly with cherry sauce appetizer was amazing. All their salads are delicious. The presentation of each dish is a work of art. They won an award from AY's Magazine for Best New Restaurant in Vermont 2020. Well Deserved. It was the first restaurant we've been to since the Pandemic and we felt safe eating there.

Excellent meal and atmosphere. Very accommodating to my dietary restrictions. Allowed me to share plates with no extra plate charge. My husband had the salmon and was very impressed with flavor. My mother in law and I split the chicken parmigiana and my father in law had the steak. The toasted bananas and cranberries for dessert were delicious. Highly recommend if you are in the area.
