About
Our Story:In the late nineties, a beautiful event planner from Brittany met a young, American chef from New York. Before long they married and their union produced first a daughter and then a culinary revolution in Brooklyn, New York. Locals flocked to Loulou, their first French bistro, as much for chef Bill's lusty cuisine, as Christine's gracious charm. Before long, Loulou beget Cocotte, another French eatery that drew crowds. Other chefs followed them, lining the streets near the Snells' restaurants with all manner of eateries. The couple turned their sights on a life-long dream: to own an inn and restaurant in Vermont. The Snells purchased the well-regarded Roland's Place in New Haven, Vermont in July 2009, changing its name to Tourterelle to reflect its romantic theme as a serene restaurant, inn, and venue for special occasions.

We had the wonderful opportunity to work with Christine for our niece’s wedding in May. The incredible views and the lovely venue were only surpassed by Christine and her team at Tourterelle. The chef’s ability to meet a number of varying dietary requirements while taking a decidedly more bespoke view of the “banquet type menus” usually found was remarkable. The quality and flavours were excellent. Additionally, highly recommend taking advantage of the new rooms available (six I believe) and the brunch service. The bridal party used these and the kids had a place of their own as the evening of the ceremony evolved (Christine arranged the babysitters as well!). As our son said after the fact “the entire Tourterelle experience really raises the bar on what a wedding experience should be “. Thank you Christine and Team Tourterelle!

The restaurant has recovered from a fire and comes back strongly. They have multiple dining areas that include event spaces, more intimate areas, and an open dining room. The menu is varied and includes daily fish and meat specials, pasta offerings, and vegetarian selections. I had a mozzarella and prosciutto starter and my wife tried house frites accompanied by a couple of dipping sauces. Portions were respectable (generous on the frites). Great tastes in the starters. Fish of the day was sea bass, beautifully presented, and a substantial filet portion that was done just right. My wife had tagliatelle in wagyu beef sugo. She said it was very good and I was allowed to try some, I agreed. There was an event in progress while we were there, some type of wedding celebration. Due to the layout of the rooms we were away from the noise and hubbub of the gathering. A plus factor for the restaurant experience since having to raise my voice to be heard across the table sours me on a venue. Wife gave a thumbs up on her dessert, a posset. The only negative marks I would give were because the restaurant does not have a full bar. They have a great wine selection and a mixed cocktail list. The items on the bar are just ingredients used for compounding the cocktails to order. Loved the outing and will return. A Note: This place is also a B&B so guests get breakfast, not sure about the general public.

When I first started visiting Middlebury, I found I focused on restaurants in the center of Middlebury for convenience. We met a wonderful couple who has lived in Middlebury for years and they invited us to Tourterelle the first visit. It is a short drive from Middlebury but definitely worth it. The restaurant is a welcoming experience. Everything from the ambience to the welcome from the owner and her staff will make it a special evening. After this initial introduction to a great evening, we decided this is where we wanted to celebrate our daughter’s Middlebury College (May, 2019) graduation dinner at. We made reservations well in advance for this special occasion. The evening went flawlessly due to the great wait staff and hospitality. Our party all enjoyed their meal and we tried a variety from the menu. We appreciated the help with wine selections to pair with our meal. A memorable evening.

So glad to visit post COVID to see that this gem has not only survived but thrived. Such lovely staff and the food was mouthwatering. We shared entrees and each was crafted to perfection. The chicken was the best I’ve ever tasted with the local wild mushrooms and fresh homemade spaetzel. The chocolate lava cake was divine. Perfect setting addeD to the experience.

Had dinner with friends who had made reservations 4 days ahead of time. We arrived on time and we’re seated on time. Servers were attentive but not pesky. We never felt rushed. I had the Sweet Potato Gnocchi with mushrooms, Swiss chard in a garlic pesto that was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. Quantities are a little on the light side. Someone with a larger appetite might be left wanting. My husband had the Tagliatelle and said it was really good, he just wished there was more. Luckily we splurged for an appetizer, heirloom tomatoes and mozzarella, and dessert. Between the other couple, who we shared a bottle of wine with, and they both had dessert and an appetizer (my husband and I shared both). Our bill was just over $300. All that being said, I would definitely go back.

Wonderful place! The restaurant is small but you don't feel as though you are on top of anyone. Nice bar.Cherry in my husband's ice cube in his bourbon a nice touch (from their garden). Service was impeccable. I suspect the menu changes frequently, maybe every day - I had the oysters as an app and the duck as entree both presented and cooked to perfection. My husband had the tomato mozzarella salad which was equally delicious. Bread was awesome and I actually dipped it in the salad dressing! My hubby had the salmon which was superb. And dessert was peach upside down cake - unsurpassable! Highly recommend this restaurant. Owner is delightful - French, of course!!!

We had a wonderful dinner last night at one of our favorite restaurants in Vermont. The meals were the best that we have had in recent memory. The drinks, Boulevardier and Manhattan, were also excellent. Christine and her staff do a wonderful job of insuring a great dining experience. Exceptional cuisine and service in a delightful country ambience. We have been coming to this restaurant for many years and it still lives up to its reputation as an exceptional place to dine.

Having dined many of times in 5 start restaurants in France, and been treated to private dinners with French trained Michelin star chefs, I was very intrigued by a restaurant in the small town of New Haven Vermont that provide a French country cuisine by Chef Bill Snell whom doesn't have the extensive culinary training. I am delighted to say I was pretty impressed. - Michael Glinter, having traveled to 68 countries and 36 states, has experienced a wide array of extraordinary cuisines. His review philosophy is straightforward—Taste, Presentation, and Service. He believes in providing readers with an unbiased perspective, highlighting both the positive and negative aspects of a restaurant. - From the moment you see the restaurant from the outside, you feel the sense of walking into a friends house for dinner. The ambiance and decor is a mix of classic and new age modern and a country farmhouse style home. The seating is well spaced out allowing for couples to groups to enjoy the environment. They also have an amazing area in the back to cater events, including a wedding event that was going on while we were there. No worries - we didn't even know they were there. -- Menu - I loved the menu. There were a lot of great things. However, I do think the chef fails in this area. You need to review the menu before you go. I would have like to see a chicken and a pork option. For example, a classic French dish - Cassoulet - which is often made with duck and pork and white beans could be very fitting in a country environment. Chicken Fricassee another favorite French dish is a classic French chicken stew. Having options when it comes to meat would round out this menu. In addition, there weren't many appetizer options. -- First they brought out bread. They probably should have left it in the kitchen. It was burnt and really had no flavor. Not really impressed. But, I didn't go there for bread. -- Oysters - Classic presentation, freshness, and flavor. The champagne mignonette was an interesting twist, although not sure how it compared to classic mignonette made in France. It definitely served it's purpose. I would have liked to see a little garnish as they have pictured on their actual website. -- House Salad - Great presentation, absolutely loved how this chef mixed chevre, plums, and pecans. The tanginess of the chevre, sweetness of the plums, with the earthiness of the pecans along with texture truly made this dish truly lovely. -- Tagliatelle - an amazing homemade pasta, this flat ribbon pasta is often missed when creating a hardy dish that incorporates beef. This was an amazing choice cooked to perfection. I wasn't entirely impressed with the Ragu. The sauce wasn't rich or savory often expected in traditional French Tagliatelle. The ragu itself basically tasted like beef. It was fairly bland, and while it allows the person to get a true taste of the Wagyu, it didn't have the wow factor you would expect from this dish. -- Bouillabaisse - Traveling the globe my favorite dishes have been Zarzuela de Mariscos, Bouillabaisse, Cacciucco, and even Caldeirada de Peixe. The waitress said it was one of the best dishes on the menu. I would definitely say I'm pretty picky when comes to this dish as I have had it within it's traditional settings of the countries they originate from. I was actually pleasantly surprised by this dish. From the second it hit the table the presentation was amazing. The blend of Scallops, Clams, Shrimp, and white fish truly melted in your mouth providing the true sense of flavors you would expect. The Saffron Aoili found on the crostini was a creamy, velvet sauce with the floral and sweet flavors of the saffron make for a great accent to the dish. What really makes this dish amazing was the stew - Spicy Red Curry. You can taste the combination of ginger, garlic, shallots, combine to make a creamy stew with a slight kick. It was the perfect combination for this dish to be my top choice. -- Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. While I wouldn't put him up against a Michelin star French chef, he as truly shown his technical skills to create an amazing experience with an impressive combination of presentation, flavors, and complex dishes. I would certainly recommend this restaurant in the future.

We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and the table wasn’t ready. No worries, we were early after all. We were invited to wait at the bar but opted to wait in the foyer as we were told it would only be a few minutes. Three other tables arrived during that time, two of which were quite early for their reservations. They seemed to know the owner as both groups conversed familiarly with her. The two four tops were seated rather quickly after the owner offered to buy them a drink if they had to wait (no such offer was made to us). That left us and another two top still waiting to be seated. It was about 15 minutes at that point so we reluctantly moved to the bar. The owner did stop by to apologize for the wait. When we were seated, we were taken to a back room that was uncomfortably warm. The owner even commented on how warm it was when she sat us and suggested that if it gets too hot, we open the sliding glass door next to our table. So we sat for about 30 minutes receiving mediocre service from a harried waitress. She brought the wrong wine to the table next to ours, asked to take my drink cup and grabbed the one I was still drinking rather than the empty one. It was really hot in the room by this point. A man at the corner table commented how warm it was. A woman at another table put up her hair to get it off her neck. A third man was visibly sweating. And we were both super hot, so … we opened the door. After a few minutes the table in the center of the room started complaining so I asked one of the women if she was cold, trying to be considerate and willing to compromise. When a man at her table yelled at me that I was the only one who was hot and I needed to close the door. He did not ask nicely. I meekly protested that I wasn’t sure that was true because I’d observed others who were also hot and he just yelled more emphatically. It was super uncomfortable. But we closed the door to only a crack. I felt awkward the entire rest of the time. When we got up to leave, I moved to close the door entirely and my husband told me to leave it and make them do it. Which felt horrible, of course, but I left it. I’m sure that table muttered horrible things about us as we left. As for the food, the bread was delicious but be aware that asking for more will set you back $7. The salad starter was fine, not much to it. I ordered the tagliatelle ragout based on the server’s enthusiastic suggestion and it was merely fine. Not boldly flavored or exciting in any way. But my husband lived his steak frites and thought the tomato confit was delectable. His best meal of the trip. And … we were served a scoop of house black currant gelato to apologize for our wait, which was a nice gesture. Although after we placed our order, we never saw our original server again.

Wonderful food, nice wine and cocktail list, service a little harried (though that's the norm these days and there was a wedding going on that evening). Be aware you may have to park in a very muddy field (yes, I know it's Vermont).

We attended a small family wedding event in early November. After a previous day of storms, the weather cleared. The setting on the main route thru town (Rt. 7) but is truly out in cow country (this IS Vermont!) The farmhouse setting (once a stagecoach stop) was delightful, with a larger event space attached. A small pond is to the back of the restaurant with great sunset views of the Adirondacks. A magical setting. The food was delicious and the service superb. Several people at our table had salmon, which had a sauce they found was overly spicy. Much of the food is locally sourced. The menu is a bit pricey if you are on a budget. We enjoyed our visit, and will return.

My daughter's wedding was here last August, and everything about it was beautiful. Christine, the owner, did an exquisite job making everything special, from the service, to the food, to all the extra touches. The food was amazing, and the ambiance of this lovely place makes it perfect for an outdoor - or indoor - wedding.
