I've been coming to the Montpelier area for years because of my work in the monument industry. This is the first time I've ever gone to the Wayside for lunch and I cannot believe it took me so long to try this place! The atmosphere...is dated in a good way--it was comfortable and familiar as it reminded me of restaurants I'd visited while growing up. Everything was clean and in good condition, service was friendly and prompt, and food was reasonably priced. It's good, basic food in a clean, comfortable atmosphere. Will definitely be back!More
Without the hassle of cooking at home! We still aren't comfortable with the indoor dining, so have ordered take-out several times in the past few months. They have a well thought out system. Its diner food of the 'greasy spoon' variety, but sometimes that is...exactly what your craving, or just easier than cooking at home. Especially good for breakfast at dinner time - the French toast needed only a slight warm-up by the time I got it home.More
We stopped in for a quick bite to eat before heading out for a day sightseeing. The reviews for the restaurant are all over the place, but we had a good visit with no issues. My review is based on what I feel that we...payed for, and will not include my review of the decor and/or interior decorating. The food was of typical quality and flavor, as you would expect from you average mom and pop style establishment. The cost was average, and the service was decent. The restaurant dining area was clean as were the restrooms. I would recommend this restaurant.More
Thank you so much for allowing us to serve you, Damaris Oyola. Till next time!
We wanted a place different to go to while we were visiting up in Stowe area. This place was highly recommended, and when we arrived, parking lot pretty full. Walk inside and you feel it’s about 40 years old decor and in poor shape. We...wanted breakfast (10:30am), and ordered accordingly. When food arrived, I noticed my husbands plate was full, eggs had food on top of them, pancakes had grill burnt pieces on them. No they were not blueberry pancakes, that was bits from dirty grill! Potatoes were ice cold, and my ham/cheese omelette, had the same burnt bits from grill top. Yuck! Greasy and within 2 hours, well you can guess where we had to go! The place had people coming in constantly, so I don’t understand the draw, but we won’t go back.More
Hi! We're sorry you didn't have a great experience but appreciate you taking time to leave us a review. We'd like a chance to make things right!
Very disappointing visit for dinner! The restaurant is definitely going in the wrong direction. The service was off, food was not what I have experienced in the past and replies from the owners is unacceptable. As stated in there reply.....maybe a rookie server, fries onthe...meal plate to long, cold veggies, etc. I guess if I return I'll have to except these new 'acceptable ' Wayside routines!More
Hi boydjuk, thank you for taking time to write a review. We hope you'll give us a chance to make your next experience a 5 star one.
Although this is called a restaurant, it's really a diner, with a classic diner menu and atmosphere. The decor is dated and worn, and service was okay but a bit abrupt, hence 4 stars instead of 5.
Thanks a lot! We appreciate your business and look forward to seeing you again!
We arrived in Montpelier Sunday evening. Hungry from the long drive. Used the search engine to find an open place to eat. This place came up and we noted the positive reviews. Terrible food. Terrible atmosphere. I ordered the grilled chicken breast with sweet potato...tater tots. Whew! The tater tots weren't too bad. The chicken? A beatened filet of grisly tastelessness. Didn't even finish it. My friend ordered the chicken fingers with the sweet potato tater tots. Seriously, isn't it difficult to screw up chicken fingers? but they did! Yeah, it was terrible.More

Wayside has existed for 103 years and truly cares about patron's safety. One way flow of walking through the restaurant, special take-out/pick-up area, and they are putting up a tent for outside dining. They have silverware and napkins wrapped, serve single serve dressings, ketchup, and...other condiments. Thank you. Their food still makes you feel like you are at your grandparents kitchen table with home-cooked comfort meals, salads, soups, appetizers, and desserts that will cause you to expand your belt. Do have the peanut butter pie with hot fudge sauce. They make both at the restaurant! Homemade Parkerhouse Rolls are brought to you with most meals and are light and yummy so said my husband. I ate vegetarian gluten-free options.More
I usually make it a habit of eating here every time I visit the Montpelier area (from the fall of 2017 until now). The breakfasts are worth any wait in line. Highly recommended.
Thanks so much for your kind words. Hope to see you again soon!
Good prices, great service and even better food! We went for breakfast one day and liked it so much that we went back the next.
I appreciate your feedback and look forward to serving you again!
There's a reason why the Wayside has been here for 102 years: good plentiful food at modest prices, and a very welcoming atmosphere. It's not fancy, but that's part of its charm. It's a down-to-earth eatery, with the comfort food and the comfortable ambience that...make it a great place for friends and family to gather. After a very long 5 months, it's wonderful to see the parking full again, and to know that in spite of all -- from the Great Influenza of 1918 the year it opened, to the Covid-19 Pandemic of today -- the Wayside can be counted on to be there for its appreciative customers. Breakfast is served all day here, but we came early anyway. We ordered the McKenzie Special, with hand-cut ham, eggs, home fries, and toast; and the (corned beef) Hash and Eggs, also with home fries and toast. Both plates were completely filled, even spilling a bit over the rim. The eggs were perfectly cooked, and the ham and hash were very well-prepared. Coffee was topped up whenever we wished. It was a hearty, filling meal, the kind for which the Wayside is well known. This restaurant seems to do a good job keeping its diners safe. Those entering are asked to give one name and a telephone number for contact tracing should that ever be necessary; they enter at the front door and leave by side one, to ensure safe one-way flow of people; one paper menu is handed out to each party; booths have extensions on the bench backs for added privacy and protection; and personnel wearing masks can be seen quickly clearing and cleaning tables. For those who are still reticent to dine inside, take-out is another option. Fortunately, this is a pretty large establishment, so it is not too difficult to provide social distancing -- meaning the distance of "one cow between two people" -- as the sign at the entrance humorously suggests. The best thing about coming here, though, was that it just felt kind of normal again. What a refreshing difference! Recommended.More

I've happened to be in the area on my way to Montreal and decided to look for a good place to enjoy a nice meal before hitting the road again. I was greeted by a nice waitress that offered me a great selection of meals....Very tasty and satisfying! Definitely recommend this place for travelers! You won't be disappointed!More

Went for dinner with family. Decided to have nighttime breakfast, so I ordered the Wayside Special. The "hash browns" were left over dried chunks of potato, not hash browns. I ordered my steak medium rare, it came gray throughout, and my eggs over-easy were both...broken. I have eaten here since 1977, and this was probably the worst meal I have ever had. Service, as always, was with a smile, welcoming and friendly, other wise this would have been terrible, not just poorMore
Hi Stephen - We're sorry you didn't have a great experience but appreciate you taking time to leave us a review. We'd like a chance to make things right!
The Wayside restaurant should not be taken for granted. It's the venerable Vermont Institution that has been serving up home fries and eggs-over-easy and a side of whole wheat since before you were born. They just celebrated their 101 birthday. The formula is classic: decent...food, reasonable prices, and friendly service. And yet, it's surprising how many places botch it up. Simple fare with chi-chi pricing doesn't work, not does indifferent service with pseudo-gourmet food. The Wayside will still be service long after the fast-food trend has become yesterday's news. You really can't describe the food as anything beyond decent. Their maple cream pie, for instance, has scored big with the food networks, but the real deal is nothing exceptional. Yes, it is sweet, and yest there is a whiff of maple, but it's nothing to go out of your way for. Appreciate the Way for what it is, not what is not, and you'll walk away a happy customer.More
