Quiet venue with comfortable seating, excellent for conversation. Limited menu with sufficient options for diverse tastes (we all wound up ordering the trout, which was quite tasty). Since they advertise being locally sourced, we had lots of questions for our waiter, who checked and reported back on things he couldn't answer. We went knowing that the restaurant is a training... The first thing you should keep in mind when going to NECI on Main is that it is a school, meaning they are all students practicing their different skills. We have visited many culinary school restaurants and this was neither the best nor the worst. Décor is understated and not particularly attractive, but that’s not a problem. The food was... More

We were a little disappointed that NECI had become a casual restaurant from the one we visited many years ago. The meals were very high quality. Our server was friendly and tried to be helpful, but he did not know how to properly clear and serve the table (new servers usually aren't a problem for us, but in this case... More

Went for a Tuesday lunch and arrived to find the restaurant mostly empty. We waited for five minutes, along with another couple who happened in behind us, before the hostess appeared to seat us. We then waited for another five minutes for the waitress to appear. Again, this is in a largely empty restaurant. The wife ordered soup as an... More

Very good drinks, very good food, very good service, very nice atmosphere. My wife had the black bean and lentil burger and I had the Sirloin steak. A little pricey, but reasonable for the experience.

For an educational restaurant, the food was extraordinary, service was excellent and atmosphere was pleasant. We had the fish & chips which was some if the best fish we've ever had!! Tender, flakes, light breading made from a local ale. Highly recommend!

I enjoyed my mid-afternoon appetizer on the front porch on a warm Saturday. Travelling alone, this was the perfect place to unwind. I enjoyed the service and the atmosphere. The food was excellent.

My only complaint was several of the menu items weren't my style so I just had a cheeseburger. It wasn't just a cheeseburger though. Some of the tastiest pickles I ever had among other creative toppings. I asked for more pickles and bought a pint of them to take home despite them not being on the menu. The cheese plate... More

We arrived around 3 PM and had our pick of only a few items on the light menu. Hubby and I split the fish and chips as we were not very hungry. The fish was good, 'chips' the standard french fries and dollup of coleslaw was enjoyed by hubby. The coleslaw dressing was unusual and I passed but hubby enjoyed... More

Imagine the entire state of Vermont as a food experiment or as its own laboratory where food products are grown and created for this particular climate; seasonally, organically, and sustainably. Now imagine restaurants as teaching laboratories this restaurant for instance. NECI on Main is a production lab for New England Culinary Institute. For over 30 years we have been teaching students to make connections with farmers, between the landscape and our food, and between seasons and culinary traditions. Sometimes we include food items that express a particular sense of place from outside of Vermont, or culinary traditions from other cultures, and use those items or experiences to enhance the foods grown here in Vermont. Our menu is no exception in this teaching philosophy, and reflects the best that Vermont’s farmers, and America’s next generation of young chefs offer.
