Absolutely go to the Barnard Inn Restaurant, but avoid the Formal Dining Room. From what we could tell by reading reviews and perusing the inn's website, we thought Max's Tavern would be more like a sports bar. Reservations at the dining room required a $20pp non-refundable deposit and there is a fixed-price three-course menu. We didn't realize that the same... More

Ate a quiet dinner late on a Sunday night at Max's Tavern (I don't think they are usually open Sunday evenings but had special hours for the busy October season). Max's Tavern was rustic and quaint, and the food, while homey was of the highest quality ingredients, techniques, and flavors. I have major appreciation for the amazing gluten free options... More

We had a meal at the Tavern which was quite good. We enjoyed the atmosphere there, even if it all was a bit perfunctory and seemed like they might be wanting us moved through the system quickly. It's a lovely and lively place and not to be confused with the main restaurant. But, we'd go back again!

This restaurant has been recommended to us by several of the locals. Definitely worth trying despite the drive. Recommend eating in the tavern versus the formal dining room. The tavern is more of a fun atmosphere. Same menu as formal dining room. Food was delicious. Loved their roasted tomato soup. Staff was friendly too.

Very nice and friendly staff. The food was very good, enjoyed the pot pie and chowder. Also the maple martini was good.

My wife and I enjoyed a nice meal with our extended family....until.... ...when we had to connect with our 12 year old son via wifi (text on his iPod) for safety reasons, the management said "no way". "You can use our land line phone. No wifi, no cell service", they said smugly. "But we need to connect with his iPod... More

Ate here (Max's Tavern) on the recommendation of a friend from the area and it was very nice. I had soup and salad and it was very good. The grounds are beautiful and the bar area rustic and nicely decorated. Service was good. Not an outstanding meal but it was very good.

On our way to Barnard we had stopped for a big lunch, so we didn't want a full dinner. We ate in the bar area and shared a bowl of tomato bisque. OUT OF THIS WORLD DELICIOUS!!! I had the Sloppy June and my husband had the burger. Both were excellent. We are so glad we went that night as... More

We ate in the pub, had a nice view of lively gardens. Waitstaff friendly and helpful. All meals were delicious: cold rhubarb soup, pork spring rolls; veggie puff pastry and 2 of us had weinssrschnitzel. Was a tad disappointed I missed the lamb. Too full for dessert but have no doubt they'd be great too.

Max's Tavern @ Barnard Inn was the best surprise of a four day visit to the area. The food was excellent, the staff pleasant and accommodating, and the short drive to and from town on RT 12 was the appetizer and the dessert. The Salmon for dinner was great. The onion rings perfect, and the burger with a cold Local... More
