I personally lover the gingerbread men, others in our group go for the sweeter options. They have everything you could want from fresh baked bread, meat and sweet kolaches, donuts, and everything in between. I will admit, one weekend we were staying in San Antonio of 1604 and I actually drove Naegelin's bakery to surprise the family at breakfast so... More

Great gingerbread cookies! Great for dropping by and picking up when leaving San Antonio and heading north on I-35. Worth the stop. Friendly service. Family owned and operated. They have kolaches, strudel and other pastries too numerous to name. We enjoyed an apple strudel and bear claw, but our favorite is the gingerbread cookies. The gingerbread is delicious! I found... I visit this area frequently and I stop here whenever I get a chance. The thumbprint cookies are wonderful, and the molasses cookies the best ever. My husband also bought an eclair and a crime puff. He said both were very good. They have a lot of choices. Strudel, cupcakes, pies, bread, brownies, cookies......you name it. We've never been disappointed!... More

Old German bakery with daily fresh made pastries and bread. Family run for a long time and traditional German pastries as well as donuts and cookies and cakes. I esp like the cherry Streudel. Stop by and you won't be disappointed.

Traditional German bakery. The line was a little long but moved quickly. Items were fresh and we found some seating right outside. This is a must stop. Then walk down the side walk to look at some of the other very old buildings.

The bakery sells older bakery in the displays, had a fruit kolache and it was hard possibly a day old. I also tried the strudel and it was very messy, too much of that white coating which was all sugar.

Todd G, Owner at Naegelin's Bakery, responded to this review

Donald, we are very upfront about the fact that we have a day-old baked goods section in our store, and we discount these items heavily due to the fact that they are no longer up to our quality standards. Your review seems to suggest that we are misleading our customers by selling day-old items without warning, which is absolutely untrue.... More

On a tour of Texas, you have to stop at the Oldest Bakery in Texas! It opened in 1868. The line was long, but we got through it quick. So many options, it can be a little overwhelming. The girl behind the counter suggested the cheese pocket and apple strudel. I got both, and my family got doughnuts and kolaches.... More

Happy to be on your list of 'musts' for a Texas tour, ronandcheryl! Thank you for joining us and for sharing some kind words about our friendly service. Sweetness is definitely in full effect here, but we've got plenty of savory and less sweet options for everyone! Hope to welcome you again soon, Naegelin's Bakery More

Saw this on the the TX tv show "Daytripper" so wanted to stop in. It's small but full of German pastries. We purchased quite of few and enjoyed all except the the tart.

The fresh cookies, pastries, pies and cakes from Naegelin's Bakery are of historic proportions and timeless quality. It's all in the preparation. The Granzin family still uses recipes developed by the Naegelin family during more than a century of experimentation to get the right ingredients. As you walk into the front door of the bakery, the sweet smell of baked foods engulfs you like a warm blanket. The glass cases are full of what seems like an almost endless array of cookies and pastries in a rainbow of colors. The bakery is still famous for their strudels that Naegelin perfected years ago. The Granzin's have added terrific sausage kolaches in addition to the menu of fruit filled kolaches. We suggest you try the popular favorite: the Lebkuche, a thick, rectangular brown cookie covered with pink frosting. Don't forget to try our apple strudel! We look forward to seeing you soon!
