Recently traveled to Gruene for a day of shopping with the girls. We decided to have an early dinner and each ordered an appetizer and dessert and then took turns trying the goodies. The appetizers we tried were: spinach mushroom quesadillas, spinach-artichoke dip, basket of french fries, and fried stuffed jalapeños. The quesadillas and dip were the best. We were... More

We ate here our first night in town. The restaurant is in an old gristmill. The tables are close together & it is noisy. The food though was good and modestly priced.

Two couples visited for dinner with great satisfaction. One was vegan and was accommodated easily. All of us ate and drank well and were fully satisfied.

The meals may cost a tiny bit more than some of the eateries around but it is well worth it. Get their rack of ribs! Fall off the bone delicious, their waitresses and waiters and very prompt and courteous. no wait time or hassle to ever get seated fast.

Ate here with colleagues on a busy Saturday evening. The establishment is a renovated cotton gin with ample room for diners. We were seated in an outdoor brick patio area next to the river and had quick and pleasant service. The night lighting and setting were perfect. Menu is diverse: food was good, well portioned, and priced reasonable. The historic... More

A Gruene mainstay. They offer a wide variety of dishes. Spectacular setting, very short wait even when it is packed.

We sat outside overlooking the river which was nice, however, there was enough wind to continually blow leaves down onto our heads and the table for the first part of our meal. The waitress was nice enough to bring lids for our drinks but we had to be mindful of our food! Not a huge deal. :-) The beef tenderloin... More

We eat at Gristmill several times a year when we want to enjoy eating while breathing in fresh air and watching the river go by. This trip, however, may have been our last. One of our regular orders is the chicken fried steak. For about 10 years we have been ordering it. Over time, we have noticed that it is... More

Lovely ambiance in an outdoor setting overlooking the river--well at least what you can see through the trees. Some seating overlooks a parking lot through the trees. Picnic table decor. Food was plentiful and yummy. Ribs fall off the fork, although they could use a little more sauce. The lunch price was $14.99, very reasonable. Our waiter was knowledgeable and... More

Description
Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular
restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years.

Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous
Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and
hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building.
Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the
restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried
steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish
and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge
pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack
Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine
list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.
