My wife and I loved this place. It will be included on all future drives through Mount Vernon. So, the name was just a touch confusing. While they have wonderful homemade desserts, this is not primarily a bakery. It is a café. It's a breakfast/lunch...spot offering excellent homemade (legit made from scratch) delicacies. It reminded me of dives/diners when i.was growing up that didn't look like much but had amazing eats. I had a "half" chicken fried steak... It was absolutely massive! Maybe the best spreading I've ever had on a CFS. On the side I had mashed potatoes with some wonderful cream gravy, and nice red beans. My wife had the rosemary chicken with green beans (not out of the can). It was a really good lighter choice. We sampled different pies - chocolate, pecan, buttermilk and love (buttermilk / chocolate) pie. They were all good but we agreed that the buttermilk and the chocolate for the best. This place has a really down home feel and the staff is super, super, friendly! Can't wait to come back for more amazing home cooked food.More

We ate lunch there yesterday. The chicken fried steak melted in my mouth. The crust was so crunchy and amazing. The mashed potatoes were out of this world and the fresh green beans were amazing. The catfish was absolutely delicious!!! To end our meal we...had homemade blueberry pie that was so yummy. This morning we had giant pancakes that were so sweet , fluffy and delicious we didn’t even need syrup., although we had syrup. The bacon was thick sliced with almost no fat. I’ve never had bacon so good!!! The entire meal was delicious and comforting.More

We were on our way home and passing through the area around lunchtime so I used the handy-dandy Tripadvisor app to find a place to eat. The Cake Lady popped up with good reviews and we like to try local places when we stop. The...parking lot is very small so we parked next door since that business was closed. They have a small indoor dining room but there is a large outdoor deck in the back. The dining room was not only small but very cluttered with "stuff" and seemed to be in need of a good scrubbing. The cake lady was very friendly as was her daughter. There were a fair number of folks eating there so it's apparently popular with the locals. The menu wasn't overly large but had a good selection. My wife had the BLT and fries and I had the pork shop special with fried okra. The BLT was pretty standard. Nothing special but a decent BLT. My wife didn't care for the fries. Thought they were overcooked. They might have been left in the fryer a tad long but I tried a couple and I liked them. They did have the skin left on which I prefer. The bone-in pork chops were pretty darn good and the serving was very large. I ended up taking one home and my dad had it for dinner. He liked it too. They weren't overly thick but had a good flavor. The fried okra was good but nothing stood out about it. We didn't try anything from the bakery so we can't judge the quality of those offerings. We saw 2-3 pies in the case but maybe they had more offerings in the kitchen? All in all, it was a good lunch. Everything was made to order so we were there awhile but I appreciate that it wasn't sitting in a warmer for hours... We were glad we tried it but there wasn't anything that would bring us back on our next trip.More

Due to the reviews, we decided to dine here for breakfast and I’m so glad we did! The staff made us feel the entire time that we were part of the family. Delicious food, great conversations, and they blessed us was take home dessert treat...on the house! My child has autism and is very particular about the appearance of food and without asking they didn’t hesitate making smaller pancakes for her satisfaction! Dishes come in generous sizes yet still affordable. You will not regret your visit and they will make you feel like you’re home for the holidays. We’ll be back for sure!More

If you are traveling down I-30 take exit 147 (Loves Travel Stop), Take Texas 423 (Holbrook Street) North for 1.7 miles and you have arrived. Quaint family owned restaurant, cafe and bakery. I had the Italian cream cake and it was excellent.

We stopped in here for breakfast, but it was too late so we had lunch. Every thing I'd made from scratch, and is absolutely delicious! Homemade pies, cakes, jellies and jams. Do yourself a favor if you're in the are and drop in!
