On a recent trip to Midland, my wife and I stopped in for the first time at Johnny’s BBQ. Upon arrival we had mentioned to the staff that this was our first visit. Super helpful walking us thru the menu. Talking thru how to order...and the flavor profiles on the sides and desserts. Food was outstanding, the wife and I agreed that Johnny’s fell nicely within our top five BBQ experiences. Ghost pepper BBQ sauce was subtle, but you knew it was there. My wife loved the cherry cobbler. She said it was the closest to her Granny’s recipe. Will return and bring family for our next visit. Appreciate the awesome service and hospitality.More

Never heard of it, happened to drive past it, had to stop. Got there just after lunchtime, so it wasn’t busy (which allowed for a nice convo (and some freshly sliced samples)! Been there forever, classic interior, so the great tasting food was a nice...bonus! Sausage was excellent, brisket at the same level, and the ribs were solid. If this was in a larger city I’d advise you go there (despite other options), so you have no excuse to not stop her for lunch or dinner when you’re in town.More

The brisket is some of the best I ever had and the southwest corn was amazing, but everything else gets a 2 from me. Sysco banana pudding, not homemade, the ribs were trash, and the potatoes salad was ok. The game was on so that...made it good.More

There are mixed reviews on this restaurant so I decided to check it out for myself. It has been a BBQ place for a long time so they must be doing something right! It’s not fancy, you order at the counter and take a seat...to enjoy. The service is friendly and helpful. The best option is the 1/2 pound of meats you choose (brisket is excellent) with 2 perfectly seasoned ribs. They are served Texas style, which is dry then you choose the sauce that you like. This is well worth your time.More

I was in town due to a medical issue with my mother and decided to have something delivered to the house. We got the one pound plate with brisket. Being from the Houston area there is no shortage of BBQ options. This brisket was very...tender and delicious. Definitely as good as I have found near me. We used Door Dash which was good and Isabel was exceptional.More

I was introduced to Johnny's as a child and hoped that when he sold out, that nothing would change. It was the same at first but then additional sugar started showing up in the BBQ sauce and cole slaw. Johnny's once had the best tart/vinegar...based cole slaw in town. When I arrived, the gentlemen took my order and asked if I would like to add ribs or sausage to my chopped beef sandwich order. I said "sure, but a rib on the side". He said the ribs come in twos and he couldn't sell me just one rib. WHAT????? I can walk into a restaurant and only buy one rib after being asked if I wanted to add ribs to my order. Totally ridiculous. What does he think will happen if he sells me just one rib? An alarm will go off and the "Rib Police" will haul us all to jail??? The chopped beef was fair today but if I want a sweet lunch, I'll go to Baskin-Robbins. I added potato salad and lima (butter) beans as my sides. The potato salad was good but the beans were so salty it made my lips pucker. I asked them if I could give the limas for pintos and they gladly did. The pintos were perfect. The iced tea was freshly brewed and good. What is it about restaurants that they think there has to be music playing that no one is listening to and add a TV that no one is watching plus the voices of patrons which all adds up to everyone straining to have a conversation. Oh yeah, a lady from the back came out and asked me about the lima beans and I told her they were too salty to eat. Her comment was that other customers had been complaining about the same. WHAT?? Does no one have the ability to connect the dots here?More

Another BBQ joint in town that was closed recommended Johnny’s. We were very satisfied with the recommendation. We got a rack of ribs for 2 of us and we’re completely overwhelmed by not only the quality but the quantity as well. 15 meaty baby back...ribs, each one with more than double the meat than bone. Oak smoked till the meat was tender and falling off the bone with very little fat. Best yet was that they served it naked without the sauce. You added your own from a wide tasty selection. I feel this is the ONLY way to get BBQ because the flavor of the meat is not hidden in some goopy sauce. If in Midland, give them a try. You will not regret it.More

The staff was courteous and the food was fabulous. The staff asked if it was my first time here and immediately after I told them it was they gave me a complete rundown on options.

Welp all things must come to end. Since I moved to Midland 43 years ago I have loved Johnny’s BBQ. It started going down and I quit going as much. But today was my last trip to my old friend. Nothing about it was like...the original. MAYBE the sliced brisket had a decent flavor but the chopped beef was nasty. Full of gristle…to much sauce…looked like leftover dog food. Actually the only flavor was the sauce. The potato salad was hard and a recipe that just wasn’t tangy enough, (Johnny had a GREAT potato salad before. ) The beans were “OK”. The banana pudding was alright but no sweetness to it. Service was slow at first but it picked up along the way. It was just so sad. I had looked forward to this meal and I was very disappointed. Its sad when a Midland BBQ institution is beat out by “Dicky’s” I was informed there was an ownership change. Bye Bye to Johnny’s. There’s too much competition for you to be sub par.More
