You expect to find good steakhouses in Texas, but more often than not, the best ones are where you least expect them, like in Leona, a wide spot in the road in the middle 'o nowhere. The Leona General Store does steak, and boy, do...they know how to do steak. The meat is a very good quality, the cuts are generous (actually, huge) and they cook it the way you want it, not the way they think you should eat it. Some might prefer a little less salty rub, but to me, that brings out the flavor and makes for an intensely-sensual eating experience. Steak sauces are available for those of you who want to screw up a perfectly good steak :), They do offer chicken, and catfish on Friday nights. Alcohol is BYOB, but they have suitable plastic glasses for wine available. Side dishes are simple, skin-on mashed potatoes, limited salad bar and a vegetable - you are there for the meat, not the other stuff. If you plan on eating here, come early - the line starts forming well before opening and can stretch for a mile down the highway, but service is good, your food arrives in a timely manner and the overall experience is very pleasant. A true winner.More
I've been wanting to eat at the Leona General Store for a long time. Finally, last Saturday night we got to go and there were no disappointments. The service was great and I had no idea of just how big this place is. The population...of Leona is 175, and it seemed like every one of them was here. We started with the salad bar and as I've always heard, their hand-cut 10-ounce ribeye steaks are at least 16 onces and wonderfully seasoned and cooked to profection. Also liked their homemade mashed potatoes.More
We only get to Leona once a year with a group of high school buddies, but we ALWAYS enjoy the steaks that are cut much larger than what you order or pay for. Grilled to perfection, they always make us want to come back again...and again.More
We were visiting family in Madisonville and asked someone where to get dinner. This was the only answer to that question. They told us that this is the best steak you will get in all of Texas. They were right! Go! Its an experience and...a great dinner. Here is the locals tip: Get there early and be ready to wait in line. We got there at 4:15 and there were already people waiting. By the time it opened, the line was so long that we couldn't even see the end of it. I have no idea where these people even parked. Order the 10 oz. It is HUGE and by no means really a 10 oz. Also, we discovered once we were already in line that the restaurant is BYOB and you can enjoy your drinks in line.More
We live in College Station...very pretty drive to Leona. Atmosphere and food is fantastic. The owners are great people and usually in the restaurant/store working. Save room for dessert!
Best Steak you’ve had in Texas at Any Price! Yes, we’ve eaten at all of fancy high dollar places in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio & Austin. However, you haven’t had the best steak until you’ve found The Leona General Store. It’s only open Friday &...Saturday (5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.). The 10 oz. steak goes for $24.00 & increases by $2.50 / 2 oz. i.e. 12 oz = $26.50. The big SECRET is that you get a lot more steak than you pay for so it’s really worth it. The other big secret is that you are allowed to share plates & the outstanding staff will bring you an extra plate & you buy extra sides & salad bar if you want or not. You’ll only be offered 1 side which were delicious mashed potatoes (skin on) & salad bar & fresh hot rolls. However, remember you’re there for the steaks which remind me of steaks in Argentina. Yes, TEXANS! The steaks in Argentina are the best in the world! The only drawback is that you must start lining up +1 hour before doors open. We arrived at 4:15 p.m. & we were 6th -10th in line. Our children ordered chicken breast dinners ($14.00) with the same sides. They were delicious! My kids ate everything which is a huge statement. However, the line is eased because there’s an ice cream parlor & wine shop next door. It’s BYOB at Leona’s do come prepared or load up at the wine shop next door. Do yourself & Family a favor & discover the best steaks in Texas!More
We have heard so much about the steakhouse in Leona, we had to try it. Went on a Friday in March, crowd was big but we were seated within 10 minutes. Friendly waiststaff, but hurried. We ordered steaks medium rare. After about 20 minutes put...steaks arrived, big and juicy, cooked perfectly. But so salty. We don't typically eat heavily salted food, so the steaks were not the best we've ever had, like so many other diners say. Just a heads up, if you're not a big salt eater, you may not like the steaks. We went back a few weeks later on catfish night (Thursday) and got the all you can eat catfish. Again, believing what so many had said, that it was "the best" catfish ever. Well....for us, the catfish was worse than the salty steaks. Way over cooked and under seasoned. All I tasted was heavy cornmeal breading and grease. The tartar sauce tasted like mayonnaise...no other flavor. I saw pickle chunks but did not taste them. I can honestly say it was the worst catfish I'd eaten in years. Save your tastebuds and drive on down to Madisonville to the place in the rv park. You'll thank me.More
Great tasting steak if you can get past the salt... Potatoes and rolls however are fantastic! Staff is fantastic..although it took a while to get our food...we did have to ask if they forgot about us!
You know how you hear all the hype on so many places, you hear rave reviews on everything from the tea to the dessert, and then you visit and it’s disgusting? That is NOT the Leona General Store! It lives up to every bit of...its reputation and then some. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and amazing food! We went on steak night and on fried fish night and both were unbelievable. The food is fresh, delicious and served at all the right temps. It’s out in the country a bit off I45, but that’s not stopping anyone! On steak night, we got there before they opened and there were at least 40 people ahead of us in line and more piling in behind. I thought it might be a problem, but they have plenty of room. I guess you can bring your own beer as well - lots of people had coolers. All in all, totally worth the visit!More
