Home Cooking Away from Home

This is our go to place, when we want to treat ourselves and leave the kitchen behind! When we can go, it's typically on Sundays after church, and the service is always great. The food is seasoned well and tastes just like your grandmother made it from scratch. My favorites are the turnip greens and cornbread. I usually order the vegetable plate (although I'm not vegan) and leave perfectly full and satisfied. Look forward to our next visit!

We stopped in for an early dinner Wednesday as I was craving chicken fried steak! Riley was our server and he was very friendly and happy! The staff all had their masks on. The restrooms were super clean, as was the restaurant. We ordered the CFS, hubby got the whole order, I got the half and it was delicious!! Their green beans are so fresh and tasty!! We could hear laughter from the kitchen so we can see why the food was so good, made with love & happiness!! The music was perfect, not too loud, not too soft. Riley said he was new but it seemed to us he was a old timer at it!! The food was really, really great! The traditional cornbread in the cask iron skillet was moist and yummy. It was an excellent dining experience. Check out was very pleasant as the women had a great sense of humor, which is important! Very nice. Not sure why it has been so long since we have been there but will be back soon!

So impressed and not disappointed!

OMGosh was my dinner wonderful. I ordered the Sr. Pork chop, cabbage & veggies, With that I received a 6” round cornbread. I thought they put someone’s hamburger in my bag by accident. It was wonderful. I took it to go and was not disappointed. Also I tried their banana pudding (homemade of course) and it was fabulous! Will be back!

Food Epic Fail

It has been a year or so since we have been here, so we tried it again today for lunch. Very disappointed. First clue this wasn't going to be a good visit was there was no hostess available to tell us how much of a wait there was. Turns out she was standing behind us manning their telephone. We could clearly see there were tables available. In fact, after about 10 minutes standing there, she seated everyone in line in the same tables that were available when we walked in. Apparently, establishment puts their phones over their in person customers. Food was epic fail. We ordered One order of "well done" hamburger steak with "homemade" fries and grilled zucchini. 2nd order Chicken-fried steak, "homemade" fries and squash. As server was walking off from taking our order, server replied I will bring out your cornbread. I just thought she would be bringing cornbread and rolls, since in the past we have always been given both. The complimentary cornbread was dry. Since I prefer rolls with chicken fried steak , when she delivered our food I asked what happened to the roll options. Her response was, you could of had 4 rolls for $1.50. A good server would have offered the option when we were ordering. Hamburger steak was medium instead of well done. Good portion was pink. Husband said when he remarked make sure its well done, she said ok but did not make any notation. Our orders came out with frozen crinkle fries instead of the "Homemade fries" we ordered. When I reminded the server that we ordered "homemade fries" Server's response was "We don't have any right now". Would have been nice to have told us this when we were ordering instead of assuming frozen fries were an acceptable substitution to "fresh homemade fries. I would have ordered any side instead of frozen fries. So much for "fresh" food White gravy was gummy and tasteless. Needless to say we will not be back.

The building has a history plaque which was nice to read. Food: Quick and hot. Flavors nice. We had cornbread as we waited Service: Waiter was SUPER friendly and talkative. We were find with the talking but some might think too much Price: average Meal Selection: anything from breakfast to entrees

Enjoyed the meat loaf which is served either with red sauce or brown gravy (I chose the red sauce). For the two sides I choose mashed potatoes and sauteed cabbage (served with a generous amount of bacon). Instead of regular bread, you are served corn bread while you wait for your meal. The portions are generous, but I would not consider this a cheap eatery.

They were good at one time. Every time we give them another shot, they always disappoint. We will not be going back. The Monte Cristo was so full of grease when I would take a bite it would run out the bottom. The chicken fried steak sucks! We're in Texas you better know how to cook a chicken fried steak or don't sell it. At night when the grown ups (manager) go home they leave the children in charge and that's a mistake. I wanted so bad to have a good place to get a good home cooked meal. This is not the place anymore!

Rude older manager time for her to retire her customer service and attitude in talking to us was 100% disrespectful. Celebrating my 78 birthday so we called and ask if our new dog was allowed in to meet my grandson. All 15 pounds of this wild crazy dog. I was told as long as he didn’t bark or snap at the customers. I have been eating here for years. We arrived and were seated, enjoying it until this lady came on and the RUDENESS STARTED. Hateful disrespectful, basically get out of this restaurant. In the past I have loved the food, loved the service. And would always stop in. Enjoyed the gentleman’s singing. The remodeling is awesome and very well done. It is ashamed about this hateful ole lady. No apology was offered just take your dog and leave. Retired Chef Gene

Awesome Cafe!

We loved this place! The setting is awesome as it is in the old historic part of town. I felt like I was in a small cafe in a small town somewhere. There was a bit of a wait on Sunday around noon, but we waited no longer than 15 minutes. Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. We both liked our food and LOVED the pancakes! We will definitely be back and letting everyone know about this gem.

Good hometown eats in Humble Texas.

Great hometown food in a cool small town atmosphere. I had the chicken fried steak with mash and onion rings. Fantastic full plate of old time southern food. Will eat here again if I am ever in Humble Texas again.

Just fabulous!

Two 'firsts' for me here - cornbread & fried green tomatoes (much to our waitress's delight & amusement) - & both were delicious. A lovely cafe in a gorgeous old building with interesting objects on the walls - I had a good look round as we were leaving. Excellent service from very nice people - I would very much like to come back to eat here on our next visit.

Wanted an authentic American breakfast experience during our business trip and not a generic chain so popped in here and it was a good choice. Pretty quiet when we arrived but a friendly welcome and the quirky decor was all we needed to feel at a home away from home. Homestyle eggs were the choice and were excellent. Seek it out in old Humble town and you won't be disappointed.
