Authentic Japanese Food

I visited Nippon at Montrose Blvd for diner and it was outstanding from the Quality and Taste of the food and Attentiveness of the service. Thank you. If you like authentic Japanese cuisine that’s the place in Houston where you can observe lots of Japanese people going there as well for this reason.

Best Sushi in Houston

I'm a native. We discovered Nippon about 5 years ago. We eat there once a week or more now. I am embarrassed (not) to say that I have been none to order a second dragon roll... best I have ever tasted. Their shrimp & vegetable tempura is a religious experience. Even their house salad dressing is amazing and I'm not a big salad guy. My usual dining companion orders vegetable rolls. He too has been known to ask for seconds. The crowd is composed of mostly regulars and there are a lot of Asian people that know about and frequent the restaurant. The TA rating of $$$$ is not accurate. Not an expensive restaurant. Service people are friendly, efficient and accommodating. The only thing about Nippon that I don't like is that they are not open that much.

Sushi lover

A truly Japanese experience (no red is telling). My umpteenth visit. I love nigiri sushis. O'toro, uni, and hotate are first class and melt in your mouth. Soba noodles and tempuras were cooked to perfection. The staff is very professional. Prices are quite reasonable for such a high quality.

Fresh Sushi, Prompt Friendly Service, Good Size Menu

Easily one of the most underrated sushi restaurants in Houston. We dined there last night. The restaurant was busy yet the service was attentive and the food was excellent. The sushi is some of the best in Houston. A little longer wine list would be nice.

I am a flight attendant and have eaten sushi all over This is the best I’ve had. The beef roll and Nioki roll are the best. I usually just eat sushi and not rolls but the Nioki is a deal breaker.

Pleasant place, reliable, god quality Japanese food. They have Sukiyaki which is hard to find. Eat there at least once a month. Enjoyed it.

We were not disappointed!! The food was incredible and fresh. This is a hidden gem in Houston. I will certainly be back. We ate inside this time but the outside dining area looked very inviting.

I can really say I love this place. The staff is great, the food never disappoints and it is fresh and authentic. The lunch bento boxes are my favorite, the price is great for the amount you get. The tempura, sashimi and miso soup here are the best I've had in Houston. I will always come back.

Good food but poor service

We ordered the food and waited for over 30 minutes until the server came back to ask what we ordered. We waited 10 more minutes and the food came. But not all of it, they forgot TWICE the full order. The server was nice but waiting over an hour just for the appetizer and dish is way too much. It was the same issue with several customers, one of the client even left before his food came and he was scolded at by the service. The staff was arguing with each other in front of everyone. It is too bad, because the food was good and tasty.

Shared excellent appetizers for dinner!

Three for dinner! We had several appetizers and one entree to share. It was a great decision. For appetizers we had gyoza, yakitori, vegetable tempura, and tuna sushi. All excellent. We also shared the Shabu shabu. Excellent service and pleasant atmosphere. Convenient to the Museum District!

Great lunch specials

Everything we ate was delicious (except the California rolls were subpar). Our table of 5 ordered off the lunch specials. $11 for salmon bento is a great deal. It includes salad, California roll, potato salad, pickled cucumbers, rice, tofu and a small 4oz (or so) pan fried salmon. Very filling. All menu items were reasonable priced. The service was attentive. The bathroom is clean. Food fresh and came out in a reasonable time frame (less than 10 minutes). As others have mentioned there is NO parking. We found street parking across the street though. Would recommend Nippon!

Being near the museum district of Houston, this was a good venue for a post-museum dinner. We visited in the early evening, before the restaurant filled up for dinner, and when there were still spaces in the limited car park at the rear. Rumour has it that at peak times you may need to park on the street, but there is the option of valet parking for $5, which is pretty handy if you don't want to waste time looking for a parking place. The decor in the dining room was very nice (see pictures), and the atmosphere a bit formal, though relaxed. I found the service slightly pushy though - a waitress all too eager to take our order and then all too quick to bring us the bill - a sure sign that we would not be encouraged to linger. A positive indication of the popularity of this place, however, was the patronage of the local Japanese community. The endorsement of the locals in seeking out their own cuisine is always a good sign. Now to the food. The menu is slightly disorientating to the uninitiated, with a dizzying choice of options, which can make selection a challenge. But the quality and presentation is excellent (see pictures). I'm always slightly dubious about raw seafood, but this was good enough to allay those reservations. My sashimi deluxe combination was delicious (see pictures). Good food, nice atmosphere, pleasant surroundings and reasonably priced. What's not to like?
