Here is a long time Houston favorite serving cafeteria style cajun food. Basic red beans & rice with sausage is excellent. Also jambalaya and specials of crawfish or shrimp etouffee. Three locations downtown if you include the site at The Cloister which is an interesting twist in the old Church cafeteria. Food has always been consistent, good portions and loads... More

So there a several locations in downtown Houston that fly under the Treebeard's flag. This one is in the Christ Cathedral hall. Cafeteria style food service offering comfort food standards like Cajun Jambalaya, meatloaf, and chicken fried steak. The sides are great as well albeit not on my nutrionist's bill of fare with ample ingredients of cheese and Cajun seasonings.... More

Treebeards is a downtown Houston staple. They have dependable food, always tasty, and alternate side dishes on different days of the week. The desserts are particularly delicious.

I returned to the Freeboards that I first went to in 1992 and oh my it was so good. Love the cafeteria style and speed of service in this Houston tradition. I had a delectable piece of grilled chicken, red beans, and collard greens. Yum, yum, yum! If you've never been, you must go. It's one of Houston's finest traditions... More

Staying in downtown Houston for the weekend and we were famished after a long flight. We discovered this well regarded neighborhood cafeteria style restaurant was just a few blocks away. I had etouffee, and my wife had chicken fried chicken. Both were excellent. And above all do not forget dessert. The red velvet cake was about the best I had... More

This place is busy - and for good reason - the food is excellent, and service is friendly and quick. I recommend the Red Beans and Rice with a side of sausage, and butter cake for dessert.

If you're looking for unique then Treebeards is the place. The food is Cajun with the standard gumbo and Étouffée. They also have daily specials like catfish, pot roast, meatloaf, etc. The line might be long but don't worry because it goes fast. Great for dine in or take out. This is one of our Go To lunch places!

Food is just great here. Lines can be huge during lunch time, though. Plan appropriately. There is no table service. You point what you want, they serve you, you pay, eat and leave. Simple as that.

Love this place. Great selection and fresh food. I could literally eat here everyday. I worked in this building for 10 years and never got tired of this place.
