Not greeted at entrance, hostess talking with man at bar. Finally came by: 4 other people on the restaurant that we could see, so why does it take 10 minutes for the server to come by. 10 more minutes to get our drinks. Serve the men first (drinks & all through the meal). Sorry we're old school. Asked for water... More

The Black Lab has been one of my favorite places in Houston since I discovered it while attending Rice in the 1970s. One notices the charming courtyard and outdoor seating around the 20x20 foot chess set in passing. While the front parking lot is small, it shares a parking garage with a library which is free and nearly empty evenings... More

Had a nice, sedate birthday dinner for my daughter here last night and four of the guests were first-time visitors. They loved the red phone booth and outdoor chess set even before making it inside. We enjoyed several appetizers (potato skins - good, and quesadillas - British?), then Beef Wellington, Chicken Labrador, Grilled Orange & Bourbon Salmon, and a burger.... More

We made the trip to the Black Lab to eat the mussels. I've traveled all over the world including Brussels (famous for the mussels from Brussels) I far prefer the mussels at the Black Lab. Good beer Family friendly Great Shepherds Pie

The restaurant is a British style pub/eatery with good food with good service (I recommend the shepherds pie). Not pricy and not too loud. There is a yard with a huge 20x20 chess board that is lots of fun unless it is August and 1000000000000% humidity. The jazz club upstairs (Cezannes) has excellent music and opens at 9pm, which would... More

I went with a coworker to this pub for a speaking event in the Churchill Room. While the pub and decor are nice, the service, prices, and food were below expectations. The service from our waitress was painfully slow from getting a drink, ordering food, food coming out, obtaining a refill, and getting the check. At least the nice table... More

I have loved the Black Labrador for 20 years ... but it seems stuck in the past. The menu is starting to feel dated. The food quality is still good but the menu and staff seem tired compared to its former glory. Disappointing to see a fav not stay current. Fantastic location and wonderful old world pub feel.

Great place to get together with friends after work. The pot pies are outstanding. Service is good too.

For Houston (or really anywhere outside of the UK), the atmosphere in this pub is great and it feels very authentic. There is also a really nice outside area with a giant chess board. The food is very high quality and they have a good selection of drinks. My only complaint is that the food is a bit pricy for... More

Atmosphere! In winter fireplace with sitting around chess set or darts with your favorite brew around a great bar or above upstairs on FRI/SAT local mixture of bands to entertain in a small setting. Outside large Garden Chess Set under OAK TREES. Food! On old English/ Irish country tables with some benches or pews and old chairs, surrounded by local... More
