Heard so much about this place so while stuck in traffic and in the area I pulled in for lunch. For an offbeat sort of place it was very clean and had a friendly staff, I ordered lunch and things went downhill quickly. I was...hoping for some collard greens but the only vegetables on the steam table were green beans and cabbage. I went for the cabbage as the green beans looked like they were from a can. After tasting the cabbage, I should have opted for the green beans. No flavor in cabbage at all, actually borderline nasty. Yams were passable but nothing special. The fried chicken while crunchy on the outside but was dry, tough and lukewarm from sitting on the steam table . The complementary corn muffins were by far the best part of the meal. I should have taken the hint when there were only two people in the restaurant at lunchtime.More

Some of the best soul food I’ve had. The fried chicken has a great flavor , crispy and not greasy at all. Mashed potato’s and gravy were ok, wish they would have cream Gravy. Cornbread was good, could have been a bit more moist ....The candied yams were absolutely wonderful.More

On Aug 14, 2021 me and my family visited the restaurant after a day out at the zoo.that was our routine spend the day at the zoo then dinner at the restaurant.I ordered the oxtails which taste almost as good as mine I was so...disappointed at the presentation only thing left was bones and scrapes and they were asking 23.00 a plate. I went over to tg3 owner to ask if there were fresh oxtails he said yes after I was told no…the fresh ones came out very tough bland I threw them away the Mac and cheese was not homemade there were flies flying all around in the bay where the food was .my daughter ordered the fried catfish she said it was cold and old ..I don’t know if they have a new cook or what but I drive an hour and 15 min for the food and unfortunately this was my last visit.More

I ordered a large variety of food items online this past Saturday based on the positive historical reputation of food quality your establishment has had in the city of Houston and surrounding areas. I couldn’t believe how disappointed I was after taking the food to...my family and friends bragging about how good all that food was going to taste. The smothered pork chops, smothered chicken, fried fish and fried chicken were dry and tasteless. All the vegetables tastes like they came straight from the can, heated up and served. I spent over $200.00’s and was embarrassed that your establishment put so little effort in evaluating all food items on your menu before serving it to your customers. Please get back to the old school This Is It Soul Food Restaurant ways when serving great food was authentic and without question. I believe in supporting black businesses I the surrounding Houston areas. Please take this as constructive criticism.More

Description of Complaint: I am a Senior Citizen and had surgery and of course could not come because of the Corona Virus Stay at Home. This Is It had been one of the best soul food restaurants over a decade but gradually lost something because...the food doesn’t the same. On 04/14/2020, I ordered 2 dinners with one being pork chops dinner and oxtails dinner. There was free slice of cake for that day. The dinners were to be delivered @ 10:00 am and it was delivered on time by the owner. I started eating the pork chop dinner and the food was bland with pork chops tough as rubber. I tried taking it of the container and season and tenderized the meat and placed in the oven. That did not help along with cornbread tasting like cornmeal and water and half done it. I ended up throwing the entire dinner away. I decided to eat the Oxtail dinner and oh my GOD......oxtail was so tough, cornbread bad and Black-eye peas taste like out of a can. At this point I was so angry because they do not care about the quality of their food anymore. It is all about the dollar and apparently they are not taking pride in food and reputation. THIS IS IT gave me a free slice cake as an incentive which turned out to b3 the worst incentive. It was dry and I had to drink water to wash it down. THAT WAS THE NASTIEST, BAD QUALITY AND BLAND. Therefore, I spent 43.33 for 2 Dinners that wasn’t fit to eat then I spent 15.99 for pizza and 4.00 to deliver.More

Today, after retrieving my brother from a 3day inpatient stay at Ben Taub, he selected This Is It restaurant for lunch. He ordered ox tails. I ordered smothered chicken. Besides the skimpy portions my smothered chicken was extra, almost over cooked dried out. The chicken...was indigestible and probably at least two days old. We ordered to go and I had mad it home. Unfortunately, I was not close enough to turn around and return this atrocious meal to This Is It. I am disappointed. Never returning.More

Clean restaurant located in a transitional neighborhood close to downtown, staffed by friendly folks serving satisfying soul food. Sounds good, but the only problem is the price. Cafeteria-style: one meat, 3 veggies & cornbread is what you are paying for. My friend added a canned...soda while I stayed with water and the total was $38! The food is good, but not worth the price. I read another review that talked about a special that also included desert & drink for $15....now, that is more like it! We both selected braised ox tails (very good), but I wish I had ordered smothered pork chops so we could have shared & compared. Disappointed that they didn't offer meatloaf as most soul food restaurants seem to. Also wish they had some greens, but the mac 'n cheese, green beans and especially the cabbage were out-of-the-park good. Cornbread was average at best. Picked up some pretty good tea cakes to take home. The portions are large, but don't justify the price.More

Yesterday I came here to have dinner during Houston Black Restaurant Week. The special menu allowed for a selection from 3 different meat options, 3 veggies, dessert and drink for $15 which was a good deal! I chose the smothered pork chop, mashed potatoes and...gravy, green beans and cabbage. For dessert, I went with the peach cobbler. This is a counter service serving line type of restaurant and drink refills have to be done behind the counter by employees because there is no self serve drink machine. All of the food was very good. The pork chop was big and tasty. The veggies were flavorful along with the cobbler. It was a lot of food that satisfied my hunger and pleased my taste buds. The interior of the restaurant was clean and consists of two large primary dining areas that are connected and there are TV's to watch if you want to. Also, I was happy to see the staff be very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant has its own parking lot on one side of the restaurant. The other side of the restaurant also has a parking lot but it is for another business that has towing enforced signs so be careful you park in the correct lot. This is a very good option to come get your soul food/comfort food fix. I would be happy to return.More

If you like real soul food, this is the place to go. They are famous for their Ox tails and yes, they are very tasty, along with the smothered pork chops and candied yams. The only thing I did not find tasty was the mac...and cheese, but all else made up for that, and the staff was awesome.More

The portions are pretty good. I tried the oxtails and the smothered pork chops since I don't make it to the metro area that much. The oxtails were really good. The mac and cheese and yams were also pretty good. The smothered pork chops were...okay. I would try this spot again. Service was excellent as well. They were helpful, especially since it was my first time there. The beans were fire. Best I have had from anywhere.More

Man. After a long day, I felt like some soul food to feed my... well... soul. I asked around and folks wanted me to go to Cleibourne’s. But I said I wanted some place that was the local fav and more like “soul” food. One...lady then said “This is it!”. And she is right! :) Brazed oxtails, yams, creole corn, and okra with onions and tomatoes. Mmmmmm. There’s more on the menu, but that is what I had I would have tried the cornbread, but SOMEONE made it with wheat flour (everybody knows real cornbread is made with corn meal and no wheat.... ). Oh well... will have to try it again:-). They have breakfast too. May have to hit that tomorrow. Clean and hard working folks. Soul has been fed. Amen.More

Based on reviews, we decided to try Houston's This Is It. The restaurant is located a few minutes from downtown. The setup is cafeteria style with a choice of a main meat which i chose smothered pork chops and three sides choices were mashed potatoes...and gravy, corn, and green beans. I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately the pork chops were very tough as if it they were over cooked. The sides were good but not memorable. I agree the portions were generous and all the restaurant employees were very polite and accommodating but overall, the food was disappointing. Not RecommendedMore

Enjoyed our lunch at Houston's This is It Soul Food Restaurant. It is cafeteria style service but there's often someone around the tables making sure you have what you need. Dinners are one meat with 3 huge sides. Absolutely the best mac-n-cheese I have ever...had -- tons of cheese flavor and so creamy. I should have ordered 3 of those! Spouse and friend enjoyed their oxtail. The tender meat seemed to fall off the bone. Sweet potatoes were like candy. The corn muffins hit the spot too. Just a personal preference: I didn't care for my mashed potatoes and the catfish batter had too much egg taste to it. No matter, there was plenty of food to enjoy. Definitely recommended.More
