About
We're an old-fashioned soda fountain, ice cream parlor, candy store, and coffee shop. We make all of our own Purity ice cream, the first manufacturer of ice cream in Texas. You can watch salt water taffy being made, which is just one of the things we're known for.

This place is a MUST! The King family opened the shop on The Strand in 1976 and recreated an old-fashioned confectionery, but the family has been making candy since the 1920’s. How cool is that?! La King’s Confectionery has every candy you could dream of, coffee, shakes, ice cream, malts, and more. Andrew and I ordered two chocolate malts and they gave us the giant silver cups they make them in and the old timey glasses to pour it into. Tip: get one malt and split it! We ended up with WAY too much! They make old school taffy in front of you and if you’re lucky they’ll throw ya some! Some of the machines they use to make it are over 100 years old, which is pretty freaking awesome if you think about it.

Fun candy store with lots of modern chocolates, old fashioned candies, and even an old hand-run taffy pulling machine. Watching the taffy worker's efforts is rewarded by him/her throwing you a free sample. Unique flavors (raspberry this time!) make the short wait worthwhile. Very busy inside, though. Still fun!

I read about this place so we stopped by. It was a fun little place. My son picked out his candy and my husband and I got fudge, fruit slices and gummy candy. Next time we come we will definitely grab more. If y'all had later hours we would have stopped by after dinner for dessert.

La King’s is always a stop for me in Galveston. I haven’t been in fifteen years, but I still think about that sundae. That sundae was just as good this week as it was fifteen years ago. The candy counters all looked delicious as well. I would have bought it all if I could. Unfortunately, the taffy person wasn’t working and the taffy containers we all empty. I will say though…some of the charm is lost without the glassware and seating. The old fashioned feel is cheapened with the styrofoam cups. Ice cream just hits you different in the fancy glass. I’m willing to pay at that price point because it includes the experience.

LaKing’s is the best! Stay and watch taffy pulls...free taffy throws! Plethora of ice cream flavors or syrup floats to banana splits. More candy, chocolates and fudge than any person can imagine. Great staff and timeless seating!

This is a really cool place for me mostly because of the historical aspect of it but the things they have are great to. If you have a sweet tooth that needs satisfying this is the place to go they have everything, including ice cream and coffee, but no baked goods. You can even watch an old fashioned taffy pulling demonstration at certain times throughout the day. We unfortunately did not get to see this. The kids of course loved the place and everything in it. I highly recommend trying the Turkish Paste I loved it and actually went back before we left Galveston to get some more. They also had sugar free stuff which I got some of for my Mom.

La Kings is a kids dream come true. More kinds of candy than you can even imagine. I’ve never seen anything like it anywhere. They even have a taffy making demo. There is a coffee bar, ice cream parlor seating, and clean restrooms. The only downside is the delicious ice cream has no options for lactose intolerant people. The sherbet is labeled “contains dairy” so they are aware that many have a problem but even so they offer nothing as options, not a sorbet or a dairy free alternative. There are some great almond, Soy and coconut milk ice creams available. So, not everyone was able to get a cone. Disappointing. Hopefully the next time we return, they will have some lactose free options. I still recommend going as it’s a great place.

We’ve been visiting La King's for many years! With regard to La King’s, the best compliment I can give them is “Some things never change!” This is what we love about this place! It’s a step back in time to enjoy classic soda fountain treats from day’s gone by and quality confectioneries, many of which are made on site. Enjoy the frequent taffy pulling exhibitions and be ready to catch a free sample from the culinary artist. This is a must on every trip to Galveston!

Went here with family and watched the taffy be made in person and this is definitely a must do. They have all sorts of sweets from ice cream, chocolate, taffy, just about all the candy you can think of sold by the 1/4 pound. Plus, the taffy making is a must especially for little kids.

I came yesterday with my mother and cousins and was thinking of buying some taffy. There was an employee making taffy when we came in. Unfortunately, I did not buy anything because while I was watching the employee make the taffy they were wiping their sweat with a rag and gloves still on and went right back to what they were doing. I kept watching and they took those gloves off and put another different glove on the right hand and in the other left hand grabbed something that looked like powdered sugar and with the left barehand they rubbed it on the taffy. I’m sure their hands get sweaty in those previous gloves they just took off. The person put the other glove on their left hand wiped their face again then went back to working with the taffy. I was really grossed out and no longer want to buy taffy here. I also saw another employee go in the bathroom with their apron still on. Really cool place, but I’m disappointed in the unsanitary things I saw and don’t plan on buying anything here again after what I witnessed.

This is a fun place on the strand. Good cold air condition which is a positive on a blazing summer day. Lots of sweet treats. From rare, odd candies and sodas to chocolate favorites. Several types of ice cream, shakes, floats, sundaes…we even watched as they made saltwater taffy. It’s a neat place. The ice cream ‘single’ scoop is probably 3 scoops worth! Lots of goodness!

This place was so cool! It looked like an old soda shop place and was full of goodies. We stopped in to get a good old fashioned malt and let me tell you they were delicious!! I wanted to try all the chocolates but that will have to wait for another day. I would have given the place 5 stars BUT one of the staff members seemed annoyed that I didn't know where to stand to order malts and shakes (even though it was my first time there) even hinting that maybe I should read the sign. Ok yeah probably true but I didn't have my glasses on and regardless that's poor customer service....so he lost any tip I would have give. Still gave the place 4 stars. Maybe next time the staff will be nicer....

So so fun! Soda Fountain, Ice Cream/milkshake/malts, all types of soft and hard candy. They make taffy and other candies right there in the shop. Fudge, popcorn, so many different chocolate confections. A must do in downtown Galveston. My kids absolutely loved it! My husband and I both had their old fashioned malts. Best I’ve ever had! ❤️ 😋

This place is awesome. Always has the freshest candies and chocolate. This place is very historic. They cook there products upstairs and bring it downstairs for sale and consumption. I have to stop here every time I am in Galveston. They also have a taffy pull every hour or so.

I have been coming here for decades and it never disappoints. Such an amazing selection for the eyes and taste buds. We enjoyed chocolate nut clusters, caramel confections and orange slices. it is like steeping back in time and a must stop when in Galveston 🍫🍬
