About
Hilltop Restaurant and Herb Garden, a famous East Texas landmark founded by renowned herbalist and cook, Madalene Hill, has been part of The Retreat at Artesian Lakes for over 22 years. The quaint dining room overlooks a lake and is surrounded by windows to enjoy the breathtaking view. Outside, a deck provides additional seating surrounded by trees and potted herbs. The staff is always happy to provide baskets of old bread to feed several varieties of fish and turtles. The herb garden and a quiet gazebo are located within walking distance.

Saturday night seafood buffet, wife had to order steak special since she doesn't like Cajun style food. It did not advertise as that, just seafood. I liked it however, the catfish and shrimp were excellent. The sides were very nice as well and the dessert...More

It's been six years since I left a review for Hilltop and I still think the food is amazing! This time we went for the Sunday Seafood buffet. Since I'm allergic to shellfish I started off with a garden salad and then went for the...More

Had a BBQ plate to go from a special group dinner. It was outstanding! Brisket was tender and moist. Smoked with oak I think. Excellent flavor. Everything was amazing. Grilled chicken breast, sausage, pork and beans (very good)....all so delicious! Their chef is very talented.

This was an ok place to eat, over priced for the area. It been closed for years, don’t waste your time driving out there. I could only go back to July of 2017, but this place has been closed at least 8 years.

Recently had the opportunity to dine at the Hilltop Restaurant — a place I had only heard wonderful things about. I was with a large group (8); we dined on a Saturday night, and it was busy, but not packed. The service was inconsistent and...More

Food was good. My favorite was the lunch picnic basket. The chicken salad croissants were tasty and the herb sauce was good as a dip for veggies. The "white linen" dinner was disappointing. The food was left covered in Saran Wrap at the cabin and...More

The only reason I didn't give a 5 star is the lack of variety in the menu - however, if you like herb based French type dishes, you will be very pleased.

Dinner here was very pricey. But it was pretty good. Staff very friendly. Small town feel and great views. Breakfast was the best!!

After being picked up in a horse drawn carriage that takes you to the restaurant, begin the glutton! Pastries, quiche (my favorite), variety of fruit, bacon, eggs, sausange, toast, muffins will all the trimings. Fresh coffee, juice, milk, sodas. Plus entertainment from the wild life.

What a hidden gem! the chef went out of his way to point out gluten free choices. We had the seafood buffet on Friday and a formal dinner on Saturday. We also had the breakfast buffet. The food was delicious and the windows all over...More
