My friends and I stopped here on our annual bike ride last week; it may have been the length of the journey to get there or the fact the sun was rather hot but it was a sight for sore eyes, and other sore parts! I had been to the pub before so knew what to expect, a warm welcome,... More

My wife and I dropped into the George in Vernham Dean on a sunny Tuesday lunchtime. We had been to Hungerford and decided to travel back to Surrey across country. The George is a lovely old pub with a carpark in the front. In fact the outside does not do the inside justice, as the inside has beamed ceilings with... More

Not nice to drive 10 miles to a pub and be treated with disdain. Although we recognised the pub was busy the server was quite abrupt and made no effort to make us welcome.

For the last 18 years my partner, me and two close friends make a yearly Pilgrimage to Wiltshire; we love the area, history, people, tourists, Crop circles, beer and food. The George Inn was a new experience and it was superb. Even the young people serving were attentive and skilled at customer service (there was no grunting, puffing or eye... More

Four of us popped into The George Inn as we were passing on our way to Newbury and had an excellent lunch there. The home made salmon fishcakes (2 portions) were the star of the show, tasty, full of salmon, well seasoned and yummy. The other main meals were scampi and chips (very good scampi with superbly cooked chips) and... More

A friend chose this pub as a place to meet up for lunch and I'm so glad she did. What a lovely place with a friendly welcome and great food. We will most likely return to sample other menu choices, my only criticism is that there was not much choice for veggies, but the staff were so nice I'm sure... More

We had the best food here, and the best service. I had the classic battered cod and chips, and for dessert, chocolate ice cream. All of my food was excellent in every sense of the word. My friend had a medium rare steak, with lemon posset and pecan pie for dessert. In her own words it was "out of this... More

This was our first visit to the George in the glorious Hampshire countryside and we left with a big smile on our faces. The building is stunning, there is a great little garden at the back. We had the beef roast which was absolutely delicious (would be perfect if you served homemade Yorkshires too!) - we ordered puddings for the... More

We've been in a couple of times for lunch with the outlaws and also drinks after a long walk at the weekend. Staff are very welcoming and ever when it's busy you don't feel rushed or ignored - the service remains high quality. The restaurant area isn't huge which we liked because you don't feel swamped by other diners, it... More

We had a cold bottle of the Vondelling SA wine with two rib eye steaks cooked to perfection, crisp and seared on the outside and pink in the middle with the most fabulous flavour to the meat - truly the star of the plate and the salad and the fries where excellent. So so good .

Description
We are located on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border, in an Area of Outstanding Beauty with beautiful countryside, wonderful walks and a pretty village. There are many footpaths, bridleways and mountain biking routes from the village including a route up to an ancient hillfort at Fosbury. The pub is at the heart of the Vernham Dean community, and we proved this by winning the Fullers Hampshire Village Pub of the year in 2012 - "the pub is the hub" award, combined with Vernham Dean winning best Village in Hampshire award. We often have 'event' days for occassions such as the Jubilee, Royal Wedding and bank holidays normally feature a band playing. We have an exciting beer festival on the August Bank Holiday weekend, which is always well attended by the locals and new customers alike!
