After many recommendations from locals we decided to try this for an evening meal..Service and food were both excellent.Word of warning ... the meals are huge .I ordered prawn cocktail (yes I know very 70's) but I had been told to try it and tomahawk steak for main. The starter would have been enough on its own so the next time... Our second visit to The Black Lion, a beautiful old welsh public house. The last time we visited it was busy with locals and full of atmosphere which was great. This time it was equally as busy with a family celebration taking place. We were warmly welcomed before being served with a very generous lunch. We hope to be back... More

We had a sandwich lunch at the Black Lion and were very pleased. Good food, well garnished. The landlady, Cheryl, was lovely. A good time.

Found this place by chance after our favourite place was fully booked. Lovely food and homely atmosphere. Gammon was fantastic. The only let down was the lack of homemade chips.

We aren't regulars but if we fancy a good meal out this is one we always try to get a table at. They never fail to turn out a great meal at good prices. The staff are always helpful and attentive. It is worth trying but you may have to book as only an intimate space and it's popular

The Black Lion is a really pleasant family restaurant in Derwenlas which is a hamlet only a short distance from Machynlleth on the main road to Aberystwyth. For me it's one of the nicest eateries in the area. The food is fairly traditional but with some inspired surprises and a 'specials' board that, with the main menu, gives plenty of... More

The place itself is quaint and cosy and there are a range of local ales to choose from. The meal itself was great but the portions were enormous. I couldn't even manage my main course let alone order a dessert. Prices were reasonable and they had a good variety of meals to choose from. Definitely worth booking a table here... More
