While dining at The Majestic Grille you might expect to see Myrna Loy & William Powell sitting at the bar, zinging witty one-liners at each other over ice-cold martinis. Originally built in 1913 as the Majestic No. 1, a silent picture house that entertained Memphians for three decades, the restaurant gives diners a glimpse of the heady Hollywood days of ol'. From the beautifully restored Beaux Arts décor to expertly prepared classic cocktails to warm, gracious service to Chef/Owner Patrick Reilly's award wining, yet remarkably comfortable food, you find yourself feeling transported to another time. In response to the issues of trying to run a restaurant in these times of COVID19, the Owners of Majestic Grille totally re-imagined their menu and food! My wife and I went to Majestic Grille several times for Saturday or Sunday Brunch. But the space...was not well suited for "Social Distancing, and the food not really good for carry out!
So the Owners considered other options for cooking the things they liked, that would allow good carry-out and table service at their sidewalk terrace tables. And, what they have come up with has had my wife and I doing several carry-outs from their new Cocozza - American Italian menu! And, I encourage everyone to try it!
Each time we have explored different options on the Menu, and they have all been excellent! As I told the Owner yesterday evening when I went to pick up food yet again ..... ,
"I went to live with my Aunt and Italian Uncle in an 80% Italian town when I was 11 after my mother was killed in an accident. All of the Italian families who lived there were either 1st or 2nd generation Italians who had come to the US!. That was 1956, and my Uncles mother had stayed up all night making her ravioli's for my welcome to Bound Brook dinner!"
Then I told the Owner, "That he may call his food American Italian, but everything we have tried has been as good as the food I came to love cooked by various Italian families in Bound Brook. And, as the food we have eaten on the various trips to Italy we have made!"
He told me that his wife and he had also grown up in New Jersey, and that was where the idea and the foods there, had become an option idea!
I said, Well, when this COVID19 thing is over, I hope you continue Cocozza! There are several places in Memphis that serve quality versions of what you had as The Majestic Grille. But, no one other than going back to New Jersey or Italy itself had ever matched his new menu!"
As my gourmet cook wife (who had been given several recipes by my Aunts) said, "When you can get food like this ... there is no point in my cooking Italian foods again!"
By the way, a word of advice! If you would like to dine at the table service on their sidewalk terrace tables, MAKE A RESERVATION! Seating is limited and always full! Now that Fall is coming with beautiful temperatures and weather, the demand can only grow even with the limited travelers today!.More
This restaurant is in an interesting setting which was part of the appeal. And it was walking distance from the Peabody Hotel. And they were open on a Sunday night, when a lot of restaurants in Memphis are closed. The old Majestic Theater is an...art deco building from 1913 has been converted into a lovely restaurant, with high ceilings, burnished dark wood partitions, and comfy booths.
We were seated in the main floor area (there are booths against the walls that are raised) and we settled in for what we hoped would be a good meal.
But we waited .... and waited. We waited for our drinks. The mixed drinks were too sweet even though we had said to air on the sour side. Another long wait for more lime juice to arrive so that we could correct the flavor (ourselves). Then an interminable ( I think it was about an hour and a half before we were served dinner) wait for our dinners to arrive. It would have been really nice, and would have made a difference, to have had some contact with our waiter who might have explained why there was such a wait. When I finally got up and went in search of SOMEONE who might be able to find our food I was told that a large group had walked in just when we did and that had overtaxed the kitchen and waitstaff. So these things can happen, but there was no communication or compensation, or a free appetizer or any effort made to address what was a problem.
When our food did arrive I would say the quality was mixed. The ribs were excellent, moist, and had a great taste from what seemed to be a dry spice rub. Several of us had the seared tuna which I found to be chewy and tough rather than melt in your mouth, even though it was rare. The presentation also didn't feel very professional to me --- kind of a heap of jasmine rice (over done with ginger --- and I love ginger) and another heap of green beans kind of thrown on top. My main issue though, was that the tuna didn't seem to be of the best quality.
We were tourists, so we won't have an opportunity to give Majestic Grille another chance. They do get very good reviews on Trip Advisor and perhaps we just hit them on a bad night. The environment was atmospheric, unusual and fun.More
We celebrated a friend's birthday here. I had French toast (delicious), another had the crab cake benedict, and the others had the eggs, bacon and biscuit entree. Everyone enjoyed their meal. But, it's beyond me as to why you would order the egg entree when...their were so many wonderful options! The restaurant is very noisy.More
We treated our great niece and nephew to dinner at Majestic before attending a performance of Aladdin at the Orpheum. Upon arrival we were promptly seated and soon after ordered our meals. All the entrees arrived in a reasonable amount of time. Hiwever, the 7...yr old's hamburger, ordered off the children's menu, was not edible. The bun was dry and the burger difficult to even cut with a knife! She was turned off by the disappointment and did not want to even reorder. She did eat the French fries. Hard to ruin a simple hamburger, but Majestic did!
Our other four entrees were very good.More
Central located, fancy place with nice little booths for the four of us. We shared a good peporoni flatbread and some grilled calamari with a good spicy sauce. I had the blue cheese burger, rich filled with bacon, green, onions, tomato slice and a great...meat patty , big but still good fit to hand, with loads od parmesan fries. Big and tasty. Decent price for burger with fries was 13 usd. Good selection of steaks and drinks.More
Great food and great service. I had a salad, flatbread, and cheese ravioli. Beautiful restaurant. They have special pricing if you are going to the Orpheum Theater as well which is close by so you can walk to it.
We made reservations through their website. Not only did they call and confirm a few days prior but I also received a text-message confirmation. After finding street metered parking along Peabody Place (recommended over the much higher priced lots in the same area), we arrived...and were promptly seated. We were warmly greeted by our server and ordered drinks which were VERY reasonably priced: A Poinsettia and Bloody Mary for $4 each! Brunch was presented along with a basket of biscuits and butter. I had the Smoked Salmon Hash with Cheddar Cheese Grits added. My husband had the Bacon-Bleu Burger with a cup of Chili (which was the soup of the day) added. Both dishes were EXCELLENT! His burger was cooked to his specifications and generously topped with bleu cheese. We were very pleased we chose the Majestic for Brunch. The setting was very neat; we caught a glimpse of the silent movie playing from time to time and the vibe within the restaurant was lively and comfortable. We felt we were in a very hip place. Ha! We highly recommend it to others.More
