Some of the best BBQ I have ever eaten. Don't waste your money on Beale Street. Go down Union Ave a mile or so and eat at Top's! We ate there after our son advised us it was the best in Memphis. He was correct.

Memphis is known for BBQ and you cannot go wrong with any choice in the city, but Tops has been a favorite of mine since I was a child. The BBQ is great, but I also like their vinegar based sauce and their slaw to...make the sandwich complete. I tell folks from other cities when they brag about the BBQ, please... even our fast food BBQ is better than yours.More

Because we live down the street and it's one of our few fast options regardless of the terrible service we have continued to order takeout food here over the years. Not sure how or why but the last two times I've been there in the...last month appears they have hired a new staff some people who actually speak. They do not appear to be miserably angry at the world. They have good social etiquette, say thank you have a good night when you leave . can actually get the order correct. When you call to place the order instead of it ringing to the point where the girl just picks it up and takes it off the hook because she doesn't want to deal with it and then you call back for 10 minutes over and over waiting for them to reconnect the line they actually answer the phone, or at least they have the last two times I've called, answered it within the first 5 or 6 rings and taken my order and it's been ready within 10 minutes. I walked over just before a huge rain storm. So I was stuck. I ordered sweet potato fries which meant my order took longer. I watched the staff prepare for probably 20 min. Not the cleanest. The food tasted ok. Half way through I noticed...how dirty the tray was. I should have walked back to the hotel and the car to find a better choice for dinner.More

I am a pulled pork sandwich fanatic. I now live in Mexico but recently visited family in my hometown, Memphis, for 7 seven days. While I visied I ate pulled pork sandwiches once or twice every day. I ate at the best listed on several...Google searches, and all were indeed exceptional but Memphis Style Bar-B-Q has morphed into a sweeter sauce with less tang (vinegar and mustard) in the coleslaw and potato salad of the 1950s. And that is why I really like Top's Bar-B-Q. Their sauce tastes like a little Lousianna Hot Sauce had been added which gives it a nice tang not found in many of the other top restaurants. I miss the sandwiches from that time. I had their pulled pork sandwich, a medium sweet tea and an apple pie for ~ $5.00. What a great deal. If you "like the tang" you will definitely like Top's. I had a BBQ pork sandwich. It was not bad, I just like a sweet BBQ, If vinegar is your thing then you will like the meat. The place was not very clean and the staff not very personable. I did not finish my sandwich....The potato salad was pretty good. The best thing I ate was the little fried pearl onions. It was just "ok". If I have to stay with relatives again I will move on down the street to other restaurants. It is convenient to the Methodist hospital and the Heathsouth rehab center, As I say if you are a fan of the more vinegar BBQ, this is the place for you.More

Not the easiest place to find but well worth the effort. Lots of off street parking. Tops is a smaller place, with quite a few years on it but they serve up some fine bbq'ed meats. Ribs were tender and tasty, brisket was juicy, I...could eat here daily.More

Tops on Union Avenue is awesome. This is a small local chain and this was my first ever visit to any location. The BBQ sandwich was very excellent - I mean as good as any I have ever had and at a very fair price....Their genius is this - they are open for breakfast and they serve the regular BBQ sandwich - awesome. It was 8:30 am and I was eating a real BBQ sandwich - not some silly corporate trendy breakfast item - just a real BBQ sandwich. The thing is, I was not alone - the place was doing brisk business. You gotta love an iconic BBQ place that has figured out that BBQ loves will eat BBQ for breakfast... well done Tops. I have no idea about the other locations - but the Union Avenue location has been here a while and it is the real deal. There is free parking - a a lot of signs warning not to leave valuables in your car - don't get scared off - this is inner city Memphis - do what the sign says and you will be fine... Go enjoy.More

The brisket was tender, the sauce delish, the fries were perfect, the burger was tasty and OH. Mah. Goodness... the apple turnover was a little fried piece of exactly what my tummy was looking for! Thank goodness for that since it’s the only dessert on...the menu. I probably could have eaten a half dozen. Super crispy on the outside and the inside a delicious sloppy apple mess in my mouth. It just needed some ala mode to make it divine. It was like eating in a restaurant that you’d step into from an 11.22.63 wormhole. Tops is awesome! We’ll be back!More

A great deal on good bbq. Fast service, high quality food, great prices too. My Sweethearts brother likes to take us there whenever we visit from Fort Myers.

I've been coming to Tops BBQ since I was a little girl. Now I don't eat pork so I can not speak on Tops BBQ, but I'm sure they have a beef brisket. I've never tried it. I come here for the hamburgers which are...delicious and they are cooked to order, so there is always a wait. In some locations the wait can be very long and it seems like they don't have enough workers.More

Expected a little more, staff were good and prices ok. but was too fast food like with plain burger buns etc. Ok for a quick snack but not amazing.
