I have been reluctant to review this place. I love the decor, the service and the cocktails upstairs are great. However, I have never been successful with my food order at the restaurant, finding it over-hyped and over priced for what I got.
Until this weekend!
I have always been nonplussed by sushi and its ilk so tended to avoid ordering from the Japanese menu. On Saturday, a friend was kind enough to try and convert me. We had a varied choice form the Japanese starter and main menus, all thankfully missing the more traditional unexciting fish on rice combo and it was all delicious! The wine we chose paired with the food very well indeed and we were well looked after by efficient friendly and not too overly familiar servers.
All in all, I am very pleased to recommend The Hook for Japanese food. Perhaps not so much for the rest of the menu.

Where to celebrate a birthday on NYE? Wanted to avoid the evening crush so lunch at Hook on the 1st floor an excellent choice. Good job we booked as reservations completely full.
Most of us picked sushi to start with but the crab tacos come highly recommended. All well received
Next, the piece de resistance - beef Wellington cooked medium/rare. Perfect. Warning; don’t over order the sides as we did., they go a long way. The fish dishes were also well received
Found the service excellent after a slow start ( overwhelmed with all tables full?). Thereafter good banter with the staff and friendly efficient service
Bill gave a slight shock (£80 per head) but when you consider quality of food, the amount of wine, beers and cocktails consumed plus grats to reflect attentive service, actually fair value for money.
I was pleasantly surprised and will certainly consider Hook again when thinking of my next meal out

We arrived a tad early but they were very understanding and gave us seats at the bar while offering us some amazingly poured cocktails. When the time came to eat we were moved upstairs to a beautifully decorated room with a nice atmosphere to match.
The waiting staff were polite and organised while also managing to show genuine interest to us as customers and sharing stories of their own. Because I’m not the biggest seafood fan I had the Guernsey Ribeye Steak and let me just say… best steak i think i’ve ever had !!
The rest of our party shared the sushi which arrived very swiftly after we had ordered and they were very complimentary about it!! It was put together so well in a quaint boat so compliments to the chef for design.
Our waitress while we were ordering was so patient and helpful - offering a well-paired wine to have with our meal and explained all the different types of sushi.
Overall it was an amazing night and a definite excuse to visit Guernsey much more often.
Good job to all the team !!

My favourite restaurant in Guernsey turned out to be a sushi bar. We had a seat upstairs at the bar watching the chefs prepare delicious sushi in front of us - at breakneck speed it has to be said and very well presented.
The nigiri was perfect and the crispy ebi roll was a nice surprise. The fusion beef tataki nigiri was the standout closely followed by the seared salmon special.
The waiting staff provided a warm welcome and our waitress was very friendly and well informed about the menu and sushi specials.
The atmosphere was great with the mix of sushi and steak lovers all under one roof. Every table was full and the wine came in a great carafe for a large glass.
Deserts were also really good - the guernsey strawberry tart was delicious and looked like something from master chef.
Will be going back!

We booked to be at the chefs table and was not disappointed. The staff were welcoming and friendly even though the restaurant was very busy. We were able to discuss our likes with the chef who was amazing and catered for my wifes Gluten Free request without any issues. The food and atmosphere was great and well worth a visit when in Guernsey.

Great selection of Japanese dishes, we had Sushi, some rolls and also Tempura and all were perfect. The staff were attentive, but they were intent on making us drink our wine faster than we wanted…I declined three times a refill (my glass was not empty), I guess that could be attentive service, but at £50 a bottle i got the sense that it was to persuade me to buy another one…they asked me twice. However, the overall evening was great, we had a non rushed meal, stayed with them for 2 hours and left full and satisfied, and with a £100 for 2 bill.

Stylish and friendly with a good selection on the menu. We were surprised at the good value of our order, especially considering this restaurant has a Michelin star.
We were seated at the sushi bar upstairs and treated to an array of beautifully presented dishes with a taste to match. The staff were excellent and made us feel most welcome.

The new format is really good. A good selection of small, medium and mixed plates all meant for sharing. All we had tasted fantastic.
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
A nice change is that there are some wines at more reasonable prices than the old Hook.
One downside is the adoption of the habit of adding an automatic tip of 10%. Annoys me for two reasons. First, if you think the food/wine/service is worth the extra 10%, be honest and show it in the base price. Second, the service was excellent and I would happily have paid more than 10%, but you had already set the amount. Your hard working staff lost out. Be honest.

New format, new menu, new kitchen. Time to check it out
We knew the old sushi/steakhouse formula had been replaced by small/medium/large plates and open kitchen with food cooked over an open fire. How did it compare?
Waitress explained the concept which was appreciated. I’m not sure the general public is aware of the new dining concept
Well the food was excellent, albeit a few menu items were not available. The sea food ( cod in curry sauce & monk fish tail on the bone were superb). Other dishes ( both small and medium) were ok with the scallops in mussel sauce getting a special mention. As a family group we were quite comfortable sharing plates and swooping food. Not sure that would work for all tables.
Presented well and table staff ( & sommelier) were all efficient and we were not rushed ( we asked for a break inbetween courses). I have seen other reviews that commented on the slow speed of service - for us not an issue as we had all afternoon to enjoy the meal
The bill was slightly more than expected- those small plates and sides add up. But I would say not unreasonable. Certainly you could budget by going with the 2 course lunch set menu for £22 which, considering the quality and discount on a la Carte menu prices, represents excellent value.
One disappointment was as I was facing away from the kitchen I don’t get to see the chefs in action.
Would I return? Probably, but with friends or family for casual dining.

Wanted to try out the new menu as have had great meals here. I’m not a fan of Sushi so I was keen to try the new concept.
Loved the menu - great choices for small appetites to larger ones ! (To share)
My small plate of lamb chops was fab! Two large chops on a bed of harissa, pomegranate & almonds.
The pork chop was served with mustard and grapes and was classed as a medium plate. This was given high marks for the size and quality of the meat. Sides of green beans and broccoli were very tasty with a hint of garlic . The cod served with a sauce Vierge was delicious !
Waiting staff extremely professional and knowledgeable.
Those that have loved their Beef Welly need not despair - remains on the menu as a ‘large plate’ to share!

Quality of food was excellent, cooked beautifully and locally sourced so big ticks there. Also the staff and service were very helpful, friendly and attentive. But if you are short of time, money (and friends) then this new “immersive” format may not be for you.
The sharing concept is fine amongst friends as long as you don’t mind all picking from the same plates. I don’t think it would work for a business meal or with people you don’t know very well. The whole meal took over 2 hours, without desserts, and so it is not the place to grab a quick bite. The experience did however allow us to try new things which we would not usually order (I am now a mackerel convert!)
The biggest down-side for me is the cost. The meat and fish large plates seemed very expensive considering sides were not included. Hook used to do a single beef wellingtons which was always a hit but at £57 for a sharing plate wellington, we gave it a miss. We were a table of 6 and paid around £80 per head for the lunch (inc. 2 drinks each [beer/wine], coffees and no desserts). That said, the quality and taste was top notch apart from the skin-on fries which were dry and over cooked. Bring back the fat chips! … In fact, bring back the sushi please!

This restaurant has changed its menu to “Small, medium, large plates”, which we do not like the concept of. It forces you to try many different plates of food that you’re unsure about and charges a ridiculous amount for the privilege. £106+ was our total bill for two people, even after they had take two off which we complained about. We have never felt more ripped off in our lives ! Would not recommend this place to anyone.

Booked at lunch time for same-day evening meal (Saturday) Never thought i stood a chance in hell of a table. The did not have my time but offer me a later sitting and a table in the cocktail-bar while we waited . before i knew it we were at our table . Staff thanking us for our 10 minute wait . Food was everything i expected, wine was just right for the dish and fantastic service .left a hefty tip in appreciation of the way the staff helped and served us .

Unbelievably costly experience….for three small plates(one being half a boiled egg with a dollop of sauce and supposedly topped with a few eggs of “ caviar”) , 6 tiny teeny oysters, one sea bass and dish of inedible French fries , plus two small glasses of white wine…..£106!!! No flavour to any of the dishes. Too much hype but little content!
Won’t be going back there, I’m afraid!

What a fantastic meal. The Hook has the best staff in town, so very knowledgeable and pleasant. The wine was superbly chilled. We had some delicious sushi to start and then a shared sirloin steak on the bone..one of the best I have ever tasted. Some may think it pricey but it was worth every penny and we will definitely go back when we visit the island again
