About
The Moorings Hotel and Restaurant is a family-run neighbourhood bistro, with rooms, on Gorey Pier in Jersey. It sits nestled below Mont Orgeuil one of Jersey’s most iconic landmarks. Run by Matthew and Iselin Jones, it prides itself on its warm welcome in historic but homely surroundings. The Moorings is a local institution, first registered as a hotel in the 1851 census. The restaurant undoubtedly takes strong Gallic influence from its French neighbours just a short hop away, but also reflects an international kitchen team and Iselin's Scandinavian heritage. The menus are produce-led, following the seasons.

Fabulous location. Welcomed and treated like personal friends. Iselin and Matthew not afraid to recommend other restaurants on the island so confident (correctly) were they in the quality of The Moorings kitchen. Great breakfast (home cured smoked salmon cut on the thick side of very thin to really get all the flavour profile), Very interesting veggie selections too. The decking area at the front of the hotel added a lovely dimension to the location with a great view of the bay and the harbour. Different cocktails (Norwegian Akvavit based for the bold!) in the pleasant bar. Good wine selection too and in no way overpriced. All the staff were on top form, friendly, welcoming, efficient and relaxed. Room was very comfortable (complimentary Negroni!) with soft pillows and duvet. Excellent shower and piping hot water. As regards the location some distance from St. Helier do not worry as there is a truly excellent bus system operating throughout the island which makes everywhere easy, inexpensive (buy a 3 or 7 day bus ticket to save money) and relatively quick to get to. Matthew was particularly informative about places to visit on our short break. All in all expectations exceeded and a fab 5 days of extravagance!

What a lovely stay we had - not only the family welcome from Mathew and Iselin but also the whole staff. Our gorgeous room overlooking the harbour, the delicious food (especially the chicken livers, the potted shrimp and the fruits de mer) and even the fluffy towels to take to the beach - lovely. There were moments when it was very busy and there was a bit of a wait but that did not stop us always getting a seat outside. And even when the kitchen closed on Sunday night, we were given some crabs so we could make our own crab linguini! Lastly, I was bowled over when the items my son and i had forgotten, arrived home to us in London first class. What service. We will be back.

After a visit to the castle we stopped here for lunch by chance. A beautiful sunny day so we sat outside and a great place to people watch. The waitress was super efficient throughout and very friendly. Our friends had open sandwiches which they said were excellent and we both had the fish soup with croutons plus a side of warm sourdough to share. The soup was absolutely delicious and declared the best fish soup he’d ever tasted.

The food was extremely poor. Their maitre D sold the menu very well, but the sad reality is that the food was extremely oversold and sub standard, posh fish and chips - awful and frozen chips with the texture of paper. Fresh tartar sauce which contained dill and nothing else. Starter of chicken livers which were over cooked. This is a very poor standard food offering Several people complaining tonight.

Hi Frances, Well that was scathing. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your evening. From your review it appears you came last night. We served 60 people last night and contrary to what you say we had no complaints, until yours appeared online. Both the fish and chip dish and the chicken livers have been on our specials list for weeks, and due to their popularity are about to go on the main menu. We sell hundreds of each dish a week. As for the chips, many say they're the best they've ever had. But clearly you can't please everyone! If you had brought it to our attention on the night, and the fries were in fact overcooked we would have been more than happy to bring you a new portion. Same for the livers. We'll email separately for further details to find out why this didn't happen. With best wishes, Matthew and Iselin

Four of us decided to dine at the Moorings Gorey Village. Well up until present we had not found the time, this was our loss. First, the welcome cheerful, chatty and rapid, we decided against a drink in the bar as we were dining quite late, but the bar appeared to be buzzing. We were shown to a cosy table in the dining room, yes it is cozy but not detrimental to our enjoyment. Our servers were very friendly and efficient so wine appeared very rapidly. The menu offering was seriously different from the run of the mill. I decided to play safe with my selection, my soup de poisson was the best that I have ever tasted, very French. I followed with a simple sirloin served with fries and trimmings m, wonderful an properly medium rare, the pepper sauce was super. My Affogato desert was lovely, one slight comment next time please add the cantucci biscotti they don’t cost much and they compliment the coffee and ice cream. Even if you add say £0.50 or similar to the cost. You still get 5 stars from me. As I indicate the service was super despite the fact that the restaurant was full to overflowing. The chef came out for a brief chat at the end of the evening, he had performed perfectly, because the meal was indeed a performance. By the way the wine selection was super as was the vegan offering. At the end, the bill was a pleasant surprise. All in all we shall make this a regular visit.

We have just returned after 3 days at this wonderful hotel. 3 days of bliss of being spoiled with kindness, efficiency and comfort. This little gem of an hotel and restaurant is run by a delightful couple, Matthew and Iselin, a warm, professional and thoroughly lovely couple who went the extra mile, over and above to ensure we had a memory. We certainly did, from sumprious breakfast, Michel quality maels, so tasty and well presented to the very efficient service overseen by Sophie, who must have had eyes in the back of her head, she knew exactly who wanted what and when and she delivered. The room was comfortable with a very good quality bed, the decoration was spot on with great natural fabrics and textures, a lot of thought had gone into the design of the room. Situated in Gorey so that you don't have to get a car out to go anywhere unless you wanted to, the beach and rocks are there on th doorsep, great food, superb views from every vista. We loved it, we will go back, we are extensively travelled and it is rare to find a gem like this and we will treasure the memories.

This special, non-corporate hotel and restaurant on Gorey Pier, Jersey is that somewhere to come to escape, relax, recharge and exhale. This is my second visit in three months and it did not disappoint. The owners, Iselin and Matthew and the complete team made me feel very welcome and very much at home. The dining experience and seafood - baby squid and crab and jumbo shrimp linguine this time around in the restaurant and Maddie’s Cafe with the real fireplace, was really good and my special, custom request mojito cocktails were divine. I did have breakfast over the three mornings and personally preferred the hot cooked choices best. In truth, the staff were very receptive and would try to accommodate any reasonable request as well as make suggestions too. Just ask! And the bar area - it was so inviting; I just did not want to leave. The rooms at the top of the light, curved staircase, with their large, old-school keys were clean and tidy. My double room was extremely comfortable, with vintage furnishings, very spacious and looked out over Gorey Pier and harbour. That view alone was calming and even though travelling solo, I booked a double room, because it was so worth it for the comfort of a double bed. I also chose to have a wonderful full body massage whilst there too. Directly out in front of the hotel's popular restaurant terrace, is the harbour with the bonus of access to a therapeutic, long sea wall walk and Grouville beach. Then, directly behind and above, are the steep, steps access to Mont Orgueil Castle ruins. If you have dodgy knees or weak ankles, all you will be able to do is just go around the back to take a look up at it, because it is genuinely only for the fit and able bodied amongst us. What is so special about staying at The Moorings Hotel? It is the feeling of coming into a safe place of tranquility and warmth. I really loved my indulgent, few days stay there at the end of September, beginning of October. Useful airport transfer tip - Even though Gorey Pier is way out on a limb, because it is literally underneath the Mont Orgueil Castle ruins, buses run there every twenty-five minutes or so. All you need to do is board the number 15 bus from the airport, ask for a transfer ticket and then at the central Liberation bus station take the next Gorey Pier bus 1 or 1a to 'The Moorings'. It is a lovely scenic drive and is between £2 - £4 total at the most. Definitely, utilise the very comprehensive bus system to get around the island to and from The Moorings.

Thank you both so much for a wonderful stay. We enjoyed it so much we will now make it a regular treat. You have captured the true essence of the Scandinavian way of living “Hygge” and “Lagom,” not too much, not too little, the right amount, everything in balance in every area. A restful, inviting place to spend time to enjoy the things that matter most in life. Finally, a hotel with fresh, comfortable rooms with Cancalesque views across Gorey Harbour and a restaurant and bar with a warm soul. And, all in keeping with a lifestyle based on social awareness, moderation and sustainability. Sea to table fresh oysters backed by healthy, delicious menu items throughout the day and evening all served up by friendly and efficient staff, if not by the owners themselves. And, if that’s not enough, after dinner you can sit fireside in the cosy Bar with an Oak Barrel-aged Negroni, a new twist even the famous “Negroni Aficionado” Stanley Tucci would adore. We loved it all!

Yet another delicious lunch at the fabulous Moorings in Gorey. As usual we were greeted with smiling faces and the warm hospitality that is synonymous with this fabulous venue. The food as always was delicious (as well as healthy - I don't like butter on my new potatoes and as usual the waiter was happy to oblige), we drank some delicious Rose from their great wine list and relaxed watching the hive of activity in the Harbour. 100% would go back. Highly recommend it for Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner. And by the way we also stayed the night - the rooms are beautifully decorated, lovely soft linen on the most comfortable bed - we have a great night's sleep!

The scallops & oyster starters were so fresh and best of all, you can choose how many you like as they are individually priced and I haven’t seen this offered in any other restaurants. 3 of us had a roast and all loved it! We were undecided on the beef or pork as they both looked so good but they said you can have both which was perfect! As always the staff are so friendly whilst remaining professional and nothing is a bother, always with a smile.

Sunday Lunch. The fish soup starter was absolutely wonderful and the Sirloin of beef main course was nicely cooked and presented but seemed to lack a little in flavor as was the case with the Lamb. The same as most places these days the wines seemed overpriced and lacking in choice.(mainly French which I personally do not like) and only one so called reasonably priced New world white at ÂŁ32 a bottle.

Thanks for your review and positive comments on the food, delighted you loved the fish soup. We aim to be big on flavour so were disappointed that you thought it was lacking, we will try harder to improve that. I am sorry that you thought the wine list is over priced, we aim to select good value wines from Europe so they do not have to travel so far, we don't see the need to import wines from the other side of the world when we have excellent ones on our doorstep. We have a wide selection of over 50 wines from France, Italy and Spain. The one New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc you correctly refer to is on there due to customer demand (NZ whites are hard to replicate in Europe!) so I let that one slip in! We hope you understand our reasons for using European Wines and that you will come back and enjoy our hospitality again soon. Best wishes, Matthew

We stayed at The Moorings for 5 nights (reviewed separately) and at at the hotel three times - once in the restaurant and twice on the terrace. To say we are difficult customers is an understatement as neither of us eats beef nor shellfish and, obviously, shellfish features quite a lot on a seaside menu. My husband had the soup as a starter and I had the smoked salmon - which was the best I'd tasted in a long while, a lovely texture and none of that slimy sensation. For our main course, my husband had the Spiced tofu coconut curry which he pronounced "delicious" and I had the fish of the day - a perfectly cooked brill. We ate twice on the Terrace and husband had chicken curry whilst I had the tempura hake and chips. The batter was light and crispy and the fish moist. The chicken curry was also great and we both had that the next time. I'm not keen on very spicy food and the staff were great at bringing me a pot of yoghurt to cool the spice to my taste.

We have just returned home from our second visit to The Moorings. We so enjoyed our first stay there last year and were not disappointed in any way by this visit. While the owners, Matthew and Iselin, were away on a well-deserved family holiday, their lovely hotel was in the very safe hands of their delightful manager, Nina, and her team of helpful and cheerful staff, who looked after us beautifully. Our room was extremely comfortable and we ate delicious meals (and drank superb Scandinavian cocktails and wine) over the four days. Although the main restaurant was not open while we were there (it opens from Wednesday to Saturday evening), we really enjoyed the relaxed vibe of the terrace/cafe, which offered a great alternative with a reduced, but excellent, menu. It was obvious that many of the diners were locals, proving the popularity of this venture. Thank you so much to you all for looking after us so incredibly well - you did Matthew and Iselin proud and we look forward to returning again soon.

Thank you so much for such a wonderful review! You have no idea how much it meant reading that, whilst we were on our first proper family holiday away from the hotel. We of course are so proud of our team, and always knew that the place was in good hands, but to read how you were experiencing it as guests in our absence, was just so lovely! Thank you- and hope to see you next year!

We love Jersey but since the pandemic, the lack of availability of food during the day (aside from sandwiches and pizzas) was really getting us down. How lucky we were, then, to stumble across the helpful, friendly Moorings, with a lovely view and comprehensive menu and drinks (including excellent cocktails and 0% alcohol for the driver!) We arrived c.3pm after a late brunch and busy morning and ordered from the great range of vegetarian options. Food was plentiful, delicious, and (in Jersey terms!) good value. Staff were friendly and helpful and we stayed far longer than we'd intended just because it was so lovely, Recommend the vegan sharing platter and the black butter ice cream which was the best Jersey ice cream we found across the whole of our trip! When we return to Jersey, we'd certainly consider staying at this little gem of a hotel and restaurant thanks to this excellent experience. Thanks to the Moorings for the best meal of our trip.

Poor service Long delays for each course. 35 mins to take order , another 40 mins for first course , main course delivered a full 2 hours after arrival . Fish soup for starters was very good but main courses very poor and not as ordered. Great view but the establishment does not do the position justice. Total indifference of staff to poor service and poor quality. Very disappointing . Best avoid.

Hi Claire, I'm sorry you felt so strongly about your visit. I would like to add that you did not have a booking, and you were seated in Maddie's not the main restaurant. I told you at the time of order there would be a wait. As you could see we were extremely busy on a Bank Holiday Monday. In hindsight, I agree, we should not have taken your order at all. But as you know you started off outside, and we then managed to move you inside as you had requested to the table you asked for. In the time between you arriving and sitting down inside, the pressure on the kitchen increased a lot. The mains you ordered were moules and an open prawn sandwich? And two kids pastas? At no point did anyone mentioned anything about the order not having been right. I came to your table myself and told you your table was next in line. It's a learning curve for us in terms of being better at saying no. When it's too busy you only let people down by trying to accommodate. I'm sorry we tried to accommodate you and let you down. But a review like this only harms good businesses trying to deliver at peak times. Perhaps you should have brought it up constructively at the time instead. I'm sure you could see we were flat out, and doing our best. Comments like 'best avoid' are harmful to business with no context. You came in the middle of service on a bank holiday Monday. We'd prefer to give you a full refund on this basis, so please contact us directly via contact@themooringshotel.com.
