Pleasant lunch time visit

As it was such a nice day, we sat in the courtyard at the front of the pub. If you like people watching, this is a good place to hang out as the pub is pretty central to the town. The service was pretty average but at least it was friendly and social distancing was observed (sort of) The food itself was good, typical style pub grum I suppose and was reasonably priced.

Friendly and Efficient

A chilled atmosphere and nice staff. Great for a lunchtime meal. You can order food and drinks at the bar inside or outside, and pay when you order or when you leave. All very civilised and relaxed. Large outside seating area. You can people watch or focus on your food/drink and company. I'd happily sit here having a glass of wine on my own and while I didn't, that is the kind of feel I had for this place. Very friendly and relaxed.

Very friendly staff. When we arrived, there was only outside seating available, although we had expressed a preference for inside. The waitress remembered this, and when an inside table became available (before our food arrived), she came and asked whether we wished to move. Good food, good portion size. Reasonably priced.

Pub Lunch

I used the Cock and Bottle two years ago whilst on holiday. The menu was much more varied and included a steak, which was very enjoyable. No steak today on the 'mains' so went for the Grilled sirloin steak baguette (served medium-rare), Dijon mayonnaise, confit shallots, rocket (T) £9.50. This is about the worst steak sandwich I have ever had, the steak was minute (mynewt) and I would have been disappointed had it been half the price. Apparently they have an 'executive chef ' who is responsible for the menu and portions thereof. It would seem to me the owners are after maximising profit per meal at the expense of customer care and customer experience. I hope this company doesn't ruin what has been a good pub which sits in an excellent location. Whilst profit needs to be made a balance between quality has to be struck and The Cock and Bottle have, on this experience, got it badly wrong.

Enjoyable evening

Traditional pub with traditional menu in a great central location. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food was great - beef pie with mashed potato topping and a warm goats cheese, beetroot and walnut salad. San Miguel and Sauvignon Blanc were both cold and delicious. Music playlist was great if you are of a certain age - which we are! Thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Good location, service and food could be better

This traditional looking pub is in an attractive square in St Helier, we’ve visited before and found it was better the last time (pre Covid). The lady on the reception type desk couldn’t even look up when we arrived (lunch time ish), we went inside where the decor is wood panelling, old fire place, typical, nice pub interior. The barman was friendlier, we ordered wine and a couple of starters/snacks, the server could have done with more training. The calamari was awful, overcooked batter and we assume frozen from a catering company rather than fresh. The salmon was ok but that does come ready prepared and hard to get wrong. There are other places to eat and drink nearby (and even in the same square) I’d try them first.

Great spot in square

Lovely to spend an hour or two watching the world go by at the square. Very busy bar. We never timed it right for food as stopped serving between 2-2.30 in the afternoon as do most places. Windows look a bit unloved from outside but staff friendly and good if you can pick a sunny spot.

Had a terrible experience here

Booked weeks in advance, as we were coming to Jersey so my partner could take part in an ultra marathon. Turned up on the Saturday at the time of booking, only to be told that our reservation had been cancelled because the kitchen was closed on Fridays and Saturdays. If this is the case, why was the booking accepted? No prior notification of this, or any apology. Avoid!

We enjoyed a good meal here. There was a reasonable choice on the menu and both our meals were tasty. The lighter bite option represented excellent value for money as the portion size was perfectly adequate. The service was polite and efficient. We chose to sit upstairs which was maybe a little quieter than downstairs and the window table had views down into the square. However the tables were a little crammed together.

Shocked by poor quality and slack service. Pleasant reception and initial service, at least three serving staff in very quiet restaurant and bar. First drinks, food order and shared starter very swift, we then sat and waited patiently upstairs but believe we were forgotten! Over 35 minutes until staff responded following my telephone call to the bar downstairs asking where our main courses were, quick response of staff to come up and visit us talking a second drinks order and assured us food was coming, the chef was busy! There appeared two tables occupied downstairs and just us at one upstairs. When food came it was dripping with oil on fried orders and poor quality. Usually do liberation eateries in Guernsey without fault, this is a definite ’NEVER AGAIN’. Complained and they knocked off £4.50 from a £112 bill. Shame on you

Friendly Pub / Restaurant

Good draught pint served at Cock and Bottle, with a good range of wines and spirits. Solid pub food menu which is tasty. The staff at the Cock & Bottle are very friendly and make you feel extremely welcomed.

Cold food and don't believe the menu

Visited here today, recommended in guide book, my wife had fish and chips, fish cold after a few minutes, I had pie of the day,steak pie, but was shepherds pie, very different, OK but not what was ordered, then it came to paying, they admitted there was problems with their card machine, which then screwed up my debit card, need to contact bank in the morning, had been using it with no problems over here in Jersey till this evening. Didn't want to screw up another card so had to use cash. Recommended that you avoid this place, plenty of good quality eateries in St Hellier.

Lack of service

Spoke to waitress who said take a seat and I will bring menus to your table. She finished serving her current customers. Was seen then out speaking with friends, sat them at a table, gave them menus having walked past our table at least 4 times in 10 minutes still no menu we left went to The Pierson instead.

Not family friendly

Approaching the pub the signage said ‘family friendly’. The outside seating area was quite busy and we were looking for lunch with our 1 year old. We walked in and asked for a table outside. The member of staff was abrupt and directed us to the outside staff who told us they don’t have high chairs or a children’s menu. We left without eating…

Terrible experience from rude young lady behind bar who refused to make eye contact and walked away when I was asking if they were still serving food to the just over an hour wait for food that should not have been served to paying customers. The staff just looked harassed so perhaps until have a good chef and adequate waiting staff maybe stick with serving drinks. We were given small discount on my mostly uneaten meal but this didn’t make up for spoiled evening. Needless to say we won’t go back and therefore can’t recommend. The one star is for my husbands pint of Liberation IPA.
