We really enjoyed the Salty Dog, its a really interesting restaurant. Firstly, upon entering you have an excellent atmosphere that many of the other restaurants do not possess in St Aubin. The menu is illuminating with its many choices, the executive chef clearly has an eye for creativity. We admired the service, the management are certainly about detail and ensuring that both the food delivery and its customers are happy. Drinks are made to be fun at the Salty Dog, cocktails and the wine list is extensive, we had a fanstatic time and could not ask for more from this excellent restaurant, certainly a return visit needs to be made!

We discovered this by accident on a recent trip to Jersey and had a late lunch. We were so impressed we booked for dinner a few days later. We weren't disappointed - there was absolute consistency in the standard of fare. We discovered the identity of the chef, Paul Fletcher, (hope I've remembered that correctly), and we've decided he's our favourite chef on the whole island. We ate out nearly every evening for the 2 weeks that we were there, but these 2 meals were stand out gorgeous. The front of house staff were very professional and, even when very busy, took time to chat to the diners and engage with them. The customers were a range of ages which made the atmosphere very convivial, and the dress code was whatever you like but no wet clothing!! We absolutely loved the whole experience(s).

We had a great night at SD. A warm welcome when you arrive and taken through to the bar for a pre dinner drink and a look at the menus, great cocktails, wine and spirit selection. The menu offers interesting dishes to try and none disappointed, the restaurant also has a vibrant atmosphere that adds to the visit. Enjoy SD ! wish I was going back today.

Very disappointing evening. Service was slow despite the lower customer numbers due to Covid restrictions. Getting the bill was ridiculously difficult. The acoustics in the restaurant are poor. With two groups of very loud ladies nearby we were unable to hear ourselves speak. Chatting to the front of house whilst waiting for a taxi, she said how noisy it was but had done absolutely nothing about it. I realise it’s difficult but these parties were really over the top! Food wise it was also underwhelming. The mackerel starter was pleasant enough but the Lobster Thermidor was poor not creamy at all. Supposed to have creamy white wine sauce. The ‘beef & reef’ was swimming in a sauce which overwhelmed the steak. The gimmicky donut dessert was awful. The donut consistency was like undercooked Yorkshire pudding. Restaurants have had a tough time and I sympathise but really this was not a great experience.

Thank you for your comments Barry We recently underwent a refurbishment just prior to lock down and it is only now that we actually have people in the bistro itself, it has become evident, as you have quite rightly pointed that the our acoustics have been impacted. This is something that I am addressing as we speak and the sound muffling panels are on their way. It is a shame that you were disappointed in your meal, we have been here at the heart of the village for over 20 years which I believe is a testament to the high quality of food we have produced and maintained during that time. Sadly we do not appear to have appealed to your pallet, nevertheless, we do have many customers who are very big fans and return time and time again. Thanks again for your comments though.

Someone has taken a huge amount of care and investment to design and build this restaurant ( as it's very smart) but it all counts for nothing when the food is average and the service is poor. We were looking forward to one of the best meals of the holiday, but this event turned into a damp squid. The wine was excellent. They aspire to a very large menu, so I selected a starter of scallops. It came swimming in a black bean sauce, which tasted mainly of a ton of salt which drowned any flavor from the scallops. I recommend the chef tastes the sauces. The main course of special lobster was average at best. Looking at the other diners the focus appeared to be on large plates of food rather than quality. The service is delivered by very hard working waiters, who regrettably have been trained to rush around faster than the ball boys & girls at Wimbledon. Due to their racing from table to table it makes the restaurant feel frenetic and kills the soft balance of the selected music ( which was very good). It also takes at least 2 attempts to get any attention as they go whizzing by. I recommend less rush and more attention especially by the management team who seemed content to sit at the bar all night.

I must say I am hugely disappointed by both the service and the food. I have heard good things about the place and finally decided to come hoping for a nice meal and despite paying a hefty price left still feeling hungry. After the main course waited for about 10 minutes to be offered desserts menu but nobody bothered to check on us so we decided to leave. There are plenty of nice restaurants in Jersey and Salty Dog does not live up to its reputation.

Lovely setting and obviously a very popular place however, a few teething problems stopped this from being a top dining experience. The host was not particularly personable, not that welcoming on arrival and gave the overall impression of being busy and therefore did not have the time to make us feel valued as a customer. The wrong wine was brought to us twice, apparently the one we selected was not available but instead of being told this we were just presented with a different wine. When I received my main course I had to point out that it was missing a key component- the lobster. Before my husband could say anything his meal was whisked away from him which although this was reasonable as this was so it could be kept warm, the manner it which it was done was very abrupt. No real apology was offered at this point about the lack of lobster although later the host did attempt this by blaming the chef - not very professional. Also interesting that my husband’s dish had a sticker/ post-it note attached to it when it arrived, I would expect this to be removed before being presented at the table. Finally on receipt of the bill the wrong wine had been charged ( a more expensive one), it felt like too much effort to have this amended. Such a shame as the food was very good and the younger staff were working really hard and were polite and friendly.

Joined friends for a holiday meal. Waitress looked like manager or owner. I asked if we could have two bill as our friends drink a lot and as we don’t, we agreed beforehand that this would be best. The waitress asked us in a condescending manner why? I explained but she refused and said it would be split at the end. I assumed she meant that they would do this but we received one bill. After calculations at the table we paid separately. The menu stated that no service charge was added. We asked the younger waitress to round our half of the bill (£93 ) up £100. This was a little less than 10% but given the condescending service, we felt this appropriate. Later, back at the Jersey Grand Hotel I checked my account and found that a further 10% had been added and £110 was taken from my account. This was not appropriate! The food was enjoyable but overpriced for two courses without a bottle of wine. Two nights later we dined at the Quayside Restaurant in St Helier, in exquisite fine dining surroundings with stunning views, superb, three course meal with a bottle of excellent wine and dessert wine included before coffee and friendly, precise service for exactly the same price. We will not be visiting the the Salty Dog again. Overpriced food and poor quality service.

We arrived to a frosty welcome. We had had our reservation confirmed and showed the waitress the email who couldn't find out reservation but eventually sat and then proceeded to ignore us. Eventually someone else came to check the email reservation again and then walked off. The frosty welcome continued with other diners. We eventually placed a drinks order which took over 15 mins and when I placed a second later on it never came, despite asking twice. I had the black break with stir fry veg for main course. The fish was cooked perfectly but it had all been thrown on a plate and the veg / noodles were overcooked and the sauce was unpleasant and it all looked a mess. We asked for the bill and the frosty waitress asked what we'd like to pay, assuming a tip! There are far better restaurants on the island. The option for a drink was a table in the car park too and there are much better places around for drinks.

We had a fantastic experience at Salty Dog in May last year. Excellent food (Seafood platter) and excellent service. As a result of this, we have attempted to go back to the Salty Dog on three different occasions and each has since been more disappointing than the last. We had scallops and pork belly, with incredibly hard bits of meat and on the last occasion we ordered the Reef & Beef (£40.00 per person!) and the food was served in a rather sloppy way on a skillet in front of us. It looked like a sea food car crash. There appeared to be no sauce at all and the food was rather bland. The atmosphere was incredibly loud and the service was very distant and inattentive. I will no longer be returning or recommending.

Surprised with previous reviews but the establishment clearly read and have improved the service. The staff were super friendly and accommodating! Waited in the bar area as they were busy on a Wednesday eve. No booking online but managed to call up at 5:30pm and get a table at 8:30pm. My husband and I were not very hungry but ended up eating: Starters: Oysters (i’m Pregnant, so couldn’t enjoy, but my husband said they were delicious and creamy and meaty) Risotto with prawn & crab I’m super fussy with food, but the Rissoto was cooked to perfection and piping hot when it came out. I polished it off with scooping the last bit with bread. Yummy! Mains: My husband and I shared half lobster and prawns. Chilli, garlic and coriander with jersey potatoes. Holy smokes this was incredible! Lobster cooked just right and served hot (muddy duck serve cold crabs). They were super considerate and gave two plates for my husband and I to share. We absolutely loved the flavours and the way the lobster was served in the fresh sauce with fresh vegetables that were not over cooked but still had bite. Oh my gosh I can still taste the yummy flavours now. The chilli and sauce does have a kick so if your sensitive to chilli’s don’t get this sauce. Must go to this restaurant again. Contemplating cancelling Atlantic Hotel for dinner to come here again! Jen

We first came to this restaurant in June 2021. It was quiet and we had a lovely time with good service and lovely food. On our return to Jersey we booked again expecting the same. HOW wrong we were. This time with the exception of our waiter we were treated like second rate citizens. The management were condescending and at times rude. We were not advised until we had ordered that there was certain items that were not available on the menus. Absolutely chaotic staff who are more worried about smudging their make up than serving the paying customers. We felt as if we were an inconvenience to the manager. A great disappointment which spoilt the day. It is interesting to note all the other negative comments recently. Salty Dog you need to wake up and smell the coffee.

We visited for Sunday lunch today and found the staff generally indifferent when we arrived. Our table was fine, next to the open window and a band was playing somewhat loudly but they did add to the atmosphere. Food was generally very good. The Prawns which are one of the restaurant's signature dishes were deemed excellent and my 'Moules a la Creme' were very good indeed, far better than I had eaten in the South of France a few days earlier. My son opted for the scallops and belly pork and was disappointed with his choice. For mains, three of us went for the Sunday Roast which was beef with several trimmings and this was very good. My wife opted for the Beef Salad and was equally pleased. She ordered a portion of chips but these failed to materialise however, they appeared on the bill - this was quickly rectified. We shared the Banana Toffee pudding and it was very sweet and rich so it was a good call to not have one each. The main problem was the poor service, particularly in delivery of the wine, which on three occasions was forgotten and when one is constantly searching for a member of the waiting team to rectify the position, it becomes somewhat waring and detracts from the enjoyment of the meal. In summary, poor service, good food and a pleasant atmosphere. Would I travel from Gorey to St. Aubin to revisit 'The Salty Dog', probably not, but if I did return I would book well in advance and reserve one of their outside tables and hope for good weather!

We were recommended the Salty Dog by a friend and it absolutely did not disappoint! We had the set menu which priced at £35pp was well worth every penny. The food was incredible. The service was great and the staff very attentive. We were not rushed through courses but not left sitting for for ages between them either. A fantastic experience all round. I would not hesitate to return and also recommend to others.

A very disappointing review to write as I believe I wrote the same last year and no change. The food is delicious- having eaten in all restaurants in st aubin- amongst the best. An evening is made , however, by the quality of the food and the atmosphere and service. As before, the service lets it down. After 45 minutes in the restaurant and no food orders taken or bread brought, we asked to have our orders taken and for some bread for the table. Our starters arrived half an hour later. We had children in our party and some attention to their needs and would have been helpful. When I asked for support to place our order I received a rather sullen response. There was no attention during the meal and no one asked if we had what we needed or wanted to order anything else . We had to ‘wave’ someone to order drinks throughout the evening. Such a shame as the setting is fantastic and the food delicious but not one that feels as special as it should based on the service and not what is expected in this sort of restaurant .
