Cafe 4 entered the downtown scene almost a decade ago, truly becoming a pioneer in Knoxville's substantial urban revitalization. Unbelievable to those who have only seen Market Square in its enlivened state, downtown Knoxville was anything but desirable at the time of Cafe 4's founding. The restaurant was birthed from a desire to bring light to a dark place, and the transformation that has taken place since has been truly remarkable. The front doors open up to the restaurant and a cozy mezzanine bar that is frequented by coffee drinkers, cocktail lovers, conversationalists, and passers by. The back of the building is home of The Square Room, an elegant space used for concerts and events. Swing…
The menu had lots of choices. I am a pescatarian and they were able to adjust the shrimp and grits to be prepared without the meat. It was rich and very tasty. The portions were large including the wonderful bread pudding.
Stopped for lunch while touring downtown Knoxville. Cafe is located in the heart of Market Square, a cute pedestrian friendly, shaded, area filled with shops and restaurants. Wasn’t too crowded as school had not started yet. Just down the road from UT. Service was excellent....We sat outside on the patio to people watch. Their shareable plates have large portions. The fish tacos were typical. Nothing great. The truffle parmesian fries were great. chicken flatbread was good also. Prices were reasonable. Worth a stop.More
We visited this restaurant in early June and sat outside on their patio area. It was a beautiful sunny Sunday morning and we sat in the shade of their canopy with a great view of Market Square. I ordered a breakfast waffle with fruit. It...was good but very simple. The others in my party were more adventurous. I really enjoyed being outside and not blinded by the sun and in the cool of the shade. It was only our second venture to a sit down restaurant in this pandemic year and we thoroughly enjoyed it.More
The food here was excellent. My shrimp dish was insanely delish. Go here for the food!!! The service was, well, honestly, not so much. Nice enough person - but our server wasn't great - we had to ask for some items several times, and my...order got screwed up. But the food made it worth it! Kudos to the chef!More
I will never recommend nor return to Café 4. My husband and I went to the restaurant to enjoy a nice evening out, and it was made clear by the service we never received on the outdoor patio that we were not welcomed. We were...seated at a two top in the center of the patio space. We sat for over twenty minutes watching every other table immediately surrounding us receive service from the same waitress – who by doing so passed our table countless times avoiding eye contact and never offering to help us. We tried to give the benefit of the doubt when we finally flagged her down to request ice water. We even attempted kind conversation with her when she dropped off the drinks. Yet again, from that point forward, we were never acknowledged or served. After more than half an hour of this treatment, we decide to confront the waitress before leaving. Her response to us not being served was that we were not her assigned table and she thought her fellow waitress was helping us. Interesting response given we had to ask for help to even get water and that her fellow waitress never came near our section of the patio the entire time we were seated. When we ask whether she mentioned to her fellow waitress that we were not being helped, she had no response. Her lack of professional courtesy was unbelievable. When we requested to speak to the manager inside, we were approached with an immediate apology as suddenly the manager knew exactly what had happened. Yet the excuses continued as she explained her servers have tunnel vision to only serve their assigned tables, and there was a last-minute change to the patio table assignments. We continue to express how the lack of service was not only unprofessional but made us both feel discriminated against, and she disputes our feelings stating this could certainly not be the case. Rather than professionally addressing the situation and respecting how we were made to feel, she asks us to tell her how to fix the situation. Why should we have to tell you how to fix your lack of management and service? Poor leadership, poor training, poor service, and complete lack of respect for others. Never again. If I could give a half star or less I would. My wife and I went here for dinner and drinks and sat on the patio for 35 minutes without any service. The server walked by us several times and clearly tried to avoid eye...contact or a simple greeting. About 15 minutes into waiting, we asked for some ice water which at this point, the waitress should have made it clear it was not her table. The waitress continued to walk by us and served every table around us and continued to avoid us. My wife and I finally had enough after a half hour without any service and decided it was time to go. I called the waitress over and asked why she was not waiting on us. She stated it was not her table and she did not realize we were not being helped. Wow – really!!! She walked by us in a very tight area and served everyone else around us but claims she did not realize we were not being helped. I explained to her that my wife and I felt discriminated and regardless of it not being her table, she represents the restaurant and professional courteous would have been nice. I also asked her why she did not notify the other server which she had no answer for. On our way out, I asked to speak to the manager. Without me saying a word, the manager came over and apologized. She clearly knew what had occurred. I asked her why I was not served, and that I felt discriminated. She stated there was a change in tables among the servers and her servers are tunnel vision to their assigned tables only. This is clearly a sign of poor management that allows her staff to ignore customers. When I reinforced that I felt discriminated and the lack of professional courteous should have been shown, she asked me how she could help. I told her it is not my responsibility to tell her how to manage the restaurant and ensure customer satisfaction. I ended the conversation by saying, the truth is in the eye of the beholder and the beholder was clearly discriminated against.
We stopped in Knoxville on our way to Houston. We were looking for a bit to eat and came across this place. It was a cute little place anf the service was great. We ordered Truffle fries to start with and they were amazing. Then...we had entrees that were excellent as well. Their cocktails were very tasty. We were very pleased with the experience and would recommendMore
