Forget Ridgewood, this is the best! Pulled pork is excellent and the sauce is phenomenal. You should also try the Phillie cheese.

Choosing this restaurant for a late lunch when we were all hungry was a dire mistake. Arriving half past two on Labor Day afternoon we were deciding among a few restaurants, all of which we'd been to before, and decided to try a barbeque place...for the holiday, also figuring that they would be quicker than some place like Longhorn Steakhouse. After ordering, it took them 48 minutes to deliver our food. Our food, which, besides the onion rings, was all already prepared so they only had to take maybe 5 minutes to fry the onion rings and then plate the food. We ordered a rib plate with potatoes and baked beans, onion rings, and two orders of soup beans that come, according to the menu, with potatoes and cornbread. After having asked whether they smoke their barbeque daily and being told yes and then after further questioning being told we don't eat the food they smoke every day but rather yesterday's or, in this case, Saturday's since they're closed on Sundays, we knew the barbeque was all ready to go so the ridiculously long wait should have been completely unnecessary. As for the taste of the food it's a mixed bag. The iced tea was weak and not very good. The onion rings came out cold if you can believe it, but otherwise would have been good. The soup beans were barely luke warm and flavorless - I didn't eat more than two bites. The ribs were okay, relatively tender but not fall-off-the-bone, and the barbeque sauce on them was sweet and good. Baked beans were nothing special. Potatoes and onions that came on the side for all three meals were quite good. The "cornbread" was actually hushpuppies, but they were also good so I had no complaints about that. We overheard another table letting the waitress know their food was cold so either the staff was having a bad day or they have a problem with serving food hot. Overall with the knowledge that the barbeque is not fresh, the painfully slow service, the boring iced tea, and the abysmally unreliable temperature for all the food, I wouldn't go back, especially not with a Smokey Bones just a few doors down and the exciting and delicious Southern Craft barbeque downtown. I can't recommend Hokie Smokie Brisket Barbeque.More

Was on vacation looking for a not national chain place. Decided to try out Hokie's as it was close to my hotel. Miss Kay the waitress was very attentive, personable, and gave honest opinions on questions about the menu. Ordered the Cuban sandwich with fried...potatoes and onions for a side. Everything was smoking hot from the kitchen and IMHO the flavors were spot on. I would definitely go back.More

First time trying them out, fries, green beans and meat were all cold. We visited on a Saturday night and our first clue should have been the fact that the place was empty. Clearly locals know better. I do not recommend.

I found nothing special about Hokie. Their barbecue sandwich was nothing special and the fries had little flavor. Walmart fries are better. I won't be back. This was a take-out.

New owner since the last time I went. Mike the owner and pit master came by and spoke to us for 20 minutes. Extensive menu. Burnt ends very good. Half BBQ chicken... very moist. Mike makes his own BBQ sauce unlike some of the other...BBQ places in JC. I plan to go back and try the BBQ wings... Service friendly...More

The server had only been working for two months and told us that she was not yet that familiar with the menu. My five ordered brisket and it was good. I order chicken quarters and they were huge, tough, and still bleeding in the center....I got a new order and they were the same. The chicken was far too old to be used as it was. We will try it again someday.More

Waitress did not know menu, the food arrived cold and was poor quality. Too many good restaurants in Johnson City for a place like this to survive.

Terrible experience. Waitress did not know the menu. After ordering several gnats circled the table. Twice the wrong order was set on our table then taken to the right table. Had to seek out another waitress for drinks and silverware which ended up being plastic...because there were no clean utensils. Wings- oversmoked and dried out. Baked potato was not warm enough to melt the butter or cheese and had to be sent back to be microwaved and still not warm. The pulled pork sandwich was 4-5 lumps of pork and not really pulled. Fat was not picked out. Had to to ask for sauce and ranch for wings. The baked beans tasted like they came from a can. A ton of sauce had to be poured on them to make them edible. When the waitresses asked for a refill I said no and asked for a check. She brought a beer and she said you wanted a refill. I said no I asked for my check. So .... bad service + bad food = bad experience. We had tried this place , that we used to enjoy, about 3 times in the last nine months to a year and all have not been good.More

We stopped for lunch and we're pleasantly surprised by the enormous selection of food AND the super friendly and efficient service! We ordered the TN Tornados (smoked poblano peppers stuffed with smoked chicken or brisket) topped with poblano cheese...a side of green beans and fries....Also, the ribs with fried potatoes and onions and fried okra. It was DELICIOUS! The rib meat was tender and flavorful and the brisket was perfectly smoked. I vote this food WAY better than Tony Gore's in Sevierville, TN. Our server, Shannon, was awesome! A must-try if you're in Johnson City!More

See my review on Yelp. Food was cold when I went twice. BBQ was not hot at all. Even the bun was ice cold. Fries were cold and onion rings were nasty, cold and greasy. Did not have a lot of batter on them at...all, not but a few in the basket and certainly was not worth the price at all. They seemed to be more like the outside peelings of the onion instead of the good inside rings of the onion. I have already sent in a review. Thought someone called from the restaurant but not sure. They can reach me at 423-956-4283 and ask for John. I hope that they see this review on Yelp and get back with me.More

I was really in the mood for some good BBQ and I remember having this place recommended to me last summer, so off I ventured. I had a good vibe when the waitress confirmed that all of the ribs were fall off the bone (which...is what I wanted) and she recommended the dry rub since I could have different sauces on the side, as well as getting "The Rivalry". The Rivalry is pulled pork, brisket and upgraded the third for ribs. My boyfriend opted for the same. We also had ONE beer. When she set it down in front of us, it LOOKED good, but couldn't even cut the ribs, let alone yank them off the ribs. They didn't get eaten, yet our bill was just under $70.00! This was presented to us on a handheld device and we asked to see this itemized. When she finally pulled up the itemization, we noticed they also tacked on a 4% service charge for using a credit card. Just, wow. For $70.00, we brought our food home and are attempted to salvage some of it in a crockpot. There's no slow cooking at Hokie Smokie. We also were informed that the ownership changed over late last year. I wish I would have tried this establishment before the changeover. Lesson learned. We won't be returning...or recommending.More
