We are new to Franklin and heard about Cool Cafe so we had to try it. We are so glad we did! The hot chicken sandwich was delicious. They have different levels of hot so everyone was satisfied. Save room for dessert because the banana...pudding was the best we've ever eaten! It was topped with a golden meringue...the perfect compliment to our meal. Tim the owner stopped by our table to thank us for dinning and asked how our meal was. We have company visiting next week and plan to go back for steak night. So nice to find a local eatery that cares about the quality of food they serve and make you feel so welcome when you visit.More
We recently moved from Florida and looked at non chain dining options. My wife and I both had the hot chicken sandwich. Crunchy on the outside, moist and tasty on the inside. Not too spicy and fries were crispy and hot. Service was excellent and...the owner (Tim) came by and made sure everything was good. He is very customer oriented and understands how to treat people. He makes everything from scratch and it is fresh. We will be back for lunch and steak night. Our new local place, not all glitz, just really good food with an owner who cares and certainly knows what good food should be.
Cool Cafe is a mainstay near Franklin High School, a trusted purveyor of authentic Southern cuisine! Could their quality remain consistent even during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, especially in a carryout order that has slightly cooled by the time you arrive home.
YES IT...DID! Well done Cool Cafe!
You could forgive restaurants for having less-than-fresh food with fewer customers during the Coronavirus epidemic. And yet, the quality of the food in our carryout order at Cool Cafe was impeccable! It was a refreshing cure for cabin fever. My father-in-law hasn’t stopped talking about Cool Cafe for years, and I think he goes once a week! But on this day, I was finally able to personally witness exactly what he was talking about!
The catfish, only served on Fridays, is so wonderfully tender and flaky. There is nothing like the crispy exterior of the perfect cornmeal batter, sufficiently crunchy without being too gritty. Fans of catfish are conjuring up images of that texture at this very moment as they read this review. I’m happy to report that Cool Cafe absolutely nails the batter to perfection.
Fried okra is a side dish that my Southern wife introduced to this once-naive city slicker. I’ve become so enamored with it that I always seek it out on the menu of any Southern restaurant! Few establishments offer a superior fried okra, but this is among the best I’ve had, large and fresh morsels enveloped in an extra crispy coating!
Oh that mac and cheese! I have to talk about this. I’m perpetually shocked that this dish is so iconic in The South, yet countless restaurants offer a pathetic rendition of this recipe with fake cheese, runny sauce, and an unbearably slimy texture. Thank you Cool Cafe for being none of these! Their wonderful mac and cheese actually does southern cuisine justice! The cheese is real, with very high quality and the proper bite! The sauce is smooth but hearty and the pasta is correctly prepared. Finally, a small Southern restaurant that knows how to make macaroni the right way!More
If you are looking for a great steak at a great price then this is the place. Owner Tim Ness has the best steak in Franklin. Yes you just read that, beats Cork and Cow, Conners, Sperry’s and anything Puckett’s can offer. Casual place, nothing...stuffy just great steak.More

I recently visited Cool Cafe on Steak Night, and it was exceptional! The filet I had was just as good, if not better, than ones I've had at much higher-end restaurants. It's hard to cook a filet well-done without over-cooking it, but they got it...right! The sides they offer are so creative--the cauliflower hashbrowns and brussels sprouts were especially tasty. Highly recommended!More
My husband and I came out for a date night and to visit a friend of ours who also works there. We were craving appetizers and steak and they did not disappoint! The chips were amazing, as were the salsa and spinach dip. They were...crispy and very light and airy, a different texture I've never had before. The baked potatoes are huge so you'll definitely have leftovers. My steak was nicely seared on the outside and very juicy in the middle. My husband chose the beef tips with rice and he was very pleased not only with the flavor but also with the portion size. We both had 3 meals out of our entrees. The bar is nicely centered so you don't feel shoved in the back away from the restaurant area and you can see the chefs preparing everything right next to you. Make sure to grab a banana pudding too, it was delicious!!!! Overall a wonderful first visit for us and we definitely will be back. Sit at the bar and ask for Hugh, he's always got a smile on his face.More
