About a week ago, I decided to try something different and off-campus. With a love for Mexican food, I went into Mexico Viejo, hoping to not be disappointed and I was not! The server was very friendly, the food was top-notch and the place was...very clean. I ordered the Pollo Fundido which was delicious! Mexico Viejo is definitely a top-3 Mexican restaurant that I have been to.More
This is a solid choice for Mexican food in Vermilion. However the Chilaquiles that they serve our over-the-top fantastic! They are a little different and the salsa they are using is better than any I have ever had before. We decided that they were adding...some chipotle to it. On the menu they do not advertise eggs with it, but I of course asked for two fried eggs plus the chicken breast as is traditional in our house and in Mexico. Buen Provecho!More
All your Mexican favorites are on the menu here at reasonable prices with good service. Here’s the five-star favorite: the soup. It’s easily the best I’ve ever had including in Mexico. A rich chicken broth, generous chunks of white meat chicken and lots of super...fresh vegetables, this soup is flavorful and beautiful. It’s also a full meal along with the tortilla chips and salsa served.More
As huge fans of Mexican food, I had high hopes for Mexico Viejo. It is a hole in the wall, which often is a sign of great food to come. Unfortunately, the food matches the decor, sad and uninspiring. The salsa, always my number one...gauge for the quality of a Mexican restaurant, was watery and bland, not a great beginning. Despite that, I soldiered on, ordering a queso dip for appetizer. It was just okay, not very flavorful at all, but not terrible. The main entrees came soon and neither my wife nor I finished ours. Again, the food was just okay. The meat was stringy, fatty, over cooked and bland. They just didn’t spice anything that we ate, which is odd for a Mexican restaurant. I am used to spicy, or at least flavorful, food at most Mexican restaurants. Here, everything that we had was bland and flavorless. I was very unimpressed and will not be back.More
Improvements have been made but the food quality and preparation is really just average- couldn't even find my withered Chile Rileno under a gelatinous goo of cheese and sauce. BUT- the seafood dishes are surprisingly good and portion size are bountiful: they arrive to table...sizzling hot and taste as good as they sound. Staff is very friendly, always. Maybe if they work on paring down the menu from over 100 items and just work on making traditional Mexican dishes outstanding. No worries about the seafood- it's terrific!More
Mexico Viejo is a favorite lunch stop when I’m looking for a quick fix of hearty Mexican food. Is it as good as what you’d find in Mexico or San Diego? Well, no, but that would be a long way to go for lunch, wouldn’t...it? With that said, the prices are good and the lunches are satisfying. Be sure to scope out the lunch menu. I love the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans (#11). The menu lists it as beef enchiladas but the kitchen is kind enough to make them with chicken if you ask. The guacamole tastes like it’s fresly made. My other favorite lunch is the fajitas made with your choice of meat. I’ve tried the chili rellenos and I’m not a fan. They just miss the mark. The service is invariably kind and I always enjoy lunch here.More
University staff, grad students, and faculty usually pack this place at lunch and with good reason. The food is good; the staff is friendly; and the price is right. The lunch menu hits all the favorites and comes out from the kitchen in time to...get you back to work on a schedule. I especially recommend the #11 Enchiladas. I always ask for chicken instead of beef and the staff cheerfully obliges. The fajitas might be the best bargain on the menu with generous amounts of the meat of your choice and grilled peppers, onions, and tomatoes. You will probably need a doggie bag to take with you.
The food is not fancy but it's enjoyable. This is Mexican the way your Mexican mama might cook for you every day, if you had a Mexican mama.More
I had just moved into my dorm at USD and so me and my mom went there before marching band started. We had about 45 minutes to eat it. First off, you get free chips and salsa, even though the salsa is quite tomato-based (I'm...from New Mexico so I know my real Mexican food, just as an FYI). The lady who was our server was okay, but she was not very attentive. I got 3 refills on soda but my mom didn't get asked if she would like a refill on her coffee until right before we left. The food was really good and really filling.More
