Lunch in a historic building, what a pleasure. also being able to buy SD. products. Good old fashioned food and a bakery to boot. Get a cool cup of Jo or a frozen one.

Small town shop with homemade pies and donuts, lattes, coffee and fun South Dakota stuff in the shop.

Their lunch menu is pretty basic: burgers, hot dogs, a few salads and wraps...it was nice to get some fresh fruit with my chicken ranch wrap. The wrap was ok, nothing to write home about. Their staff were friendly and helpful. You can tell that they aim to please. I wish they had some other kinds of sandwiches (such as... More

The staff were very friendly and efficient, and the tables are mostly set up so that you share with others, which is a lovely way to interact with locals and/or travelers. This is kind of a dry goods store with tables in the middle and a register/bakery case/table for buffet along one side. We enjoyed a nice breakfast of eggs,... More

This was a quick breakfast stop before we toured the Ingalls-Wilder Historic Homes. Sitting in a small town store/cafe/bakery is very different for a city dweller. Food was fine, average prices, and the service was good.

Interesting place in an old building. To me the food was a little over priced for what you get, breakfast does not come with any potatoes, lunch is average. Not a lot of options in De Smet. Staff was very friendly.

After completing the Laura Ingalls Wilder Tour, we asked where to go to eat. Ward's was suggested. The perimeter is a store and in the center are tables. The waitresses were extremely friendly. They asked if we wanted to order off the menu (basic burgers and sandwiches) or have the Daily Special which was a Taco Bar. We opted for... More

Great breakfast, great small town feel. Must visit Ward's when in De Smet. Pastries are great, so is breakfast, and there are a lot of interesting local crafts for sale. Neat history too, as it was originally an Opera House.

Patti Ward does a fantastic job with this place! It is the old opera house and feels a little bit like a step back in time. Her prices are ridiculously low! Great breakfast, go early if you want homemade scones or the best caramel rolls! Friday is usually taco bar and each day has a special lunch item or two.... More

Having travelled from Australia to fill my childhood dream of going to De Smet to see all things Laura Ingalls Wilder, I was totally in raptures with Wards Bakery. The food was yummy, a great American small town experience which included the all you can eat pizza bar and salad for lunch, and then a return visit for breakfast the... More
