My wife and I had lunch at the Charleston Bakery on Friday after getting a recommendation from a friend. We were not disappointed. My wife had a pastrami and corn beef on rye sandwich and I had a ham sausage bacon and cheese omelet with rye toast and home fries. My wife absolutely loved her sandwich and I enjoyed my omelet- it was huge and the rye toast was incredible. The coffee was excellent as well. This place was the closest to a NY deli/diner that we have found in S.C. I also appreciate the fact that you can get breakfast for lunch. The menu is huge so there should be something to satisfy just about every one. We will be back soon!

Charleston Bakery & Delicatessen on Dorchester Road in Summerville is a great place to go for all things delicious sandwiches and much more. I really like the location and it is a good stop when you are in the area. The staff here is very friendly and welcoming and make sure that you have everything that you need.

Friendly staff, and very clean. We had breakfast, I had the omelet with bagel and an ice coffee which was excellent. Coffee is so full flavor and rich, so yummm. My wife had the corned beef hash which was so unique and awesome in flavor. Their bagels are the best! We will be regular customers now that we found them. I bought one of their Gilden made t shirts to support them!!! A must go...

Nice looking but the taste doesn’t follow

The service wasn’t really good with the people not even acknowledging you and letting you wait for a while (we don’t mind waiting but at least let us know you are going to get to us...). The food looked good and there was a large selection but none of the 4 items we ordered was actually good. The coffee was just okay, the French croissant with cream filling was probably the worst as the cream was so salty that it was actually uneatable, the danish with raspberry jam was very very sweet with a layer of jam too big (and mostly sugar) and additional crunchy sugar grains for decoration not nice when you are eating, and last, the onion bagel had way too much onion and most of them not cooked enough which made them soft instead of crunchy. Being generous in the portions is great but too much in that case was detrimental to the baked goods. I really hope that someone messed up the salt today for the croissant because it was really way too salty, I tried going back inside to let them know but after waiting a little without anyone acknowledging me I just left.

The food is good but expect a long wait to order, rude cashier, and poor service

The food is good. However, the service left a really bad taste in my mouth. The woman who runs the register must be related to the owner because no one would allow such a rude person to actually work with the public if they were not related. She was impatient and did not give me a receipt and scolded me for not asking in advance for one. Like that's a thing. Then my Ruben was delivered to the table over 8 minutes before my friend's meatball sub was finally delivered to the table. Yes, I timed it. No one came by to check on us. They just unceremoniously slapped the tray on the table and walked away. As I said, the food was good but considering the time we had to wait to finally place our order, the rudeness of the cashier, the lack of service, and the overall mediocrity of the place, I don't see myself returning and I don't recommend that anyone who wants to be treated nicely and enjoy a good meal. I didn't mention the price because I think the prices are on par for restaurant food these days. The food is not inexpensive. It also does not look like the pictures on the website. There is much more corned beef in the Ruben in the menu picture than on the actual sandwich. Sorry, the higher prices are worth it for the whole package but not if you have to deal with the rude, inconsiderate staff and generally irritating aspects of the inefficient service and long wait.

Noon on a Sunday- a very busy time. We were 9th in line and just one person taking orders so it took over 15 minutes to place our order. Not only did she take orders, she also had to get some of the smaller items like bagels and desserts, and bag them up for take out orders. At the time of our order, there were 15 more people standing in line. Not an efficient system. My wrap was supposed to have chicken in it, but halfway thru, I had to open it up to see if there was any. Am still searching. It was, however, overloaded with walnut halves and huge chunks of beets. Unfortunately the vinaigrette was mostly oil and left the whole wrap hard to manage. My husband said the corned beef in his Reuben was tough and the sandwich rather small. The pasta salad had more onion and peppers than pasta. My biggest issue though in this place is reeking of a diner kitchen for the rest of the day. I have to change clothes or air them out when we leave because of the greasy diner smell. . You’d think as a bakery you would smell like baked goods when entering and leaving. Not so. And why didn’t they expand to next door when that space became vacant? It’s way too small to handle their customers. Living close by it would be tempting to visit more often, but have been turned off too many times to ever go back.

Coffee was good

Tomato pie crust was not cooked all the way, it was gummy and it was not heated up all the way either, it was cold in the middle. The beet salad was very tasty, the monte cristo was basically sweet french toast and VERY salty lunch turkey and ham. The coffee really good! I was here a couple times before and had the deli and never came back til today and I think that's it.

I walked in to place my order and it took 20 minutes to receive the sandwich I ordered. The cashier marked my order as if I called on the phone and the sandwich was waiting on their kitchen counter. They never called my name.. I had to wait in line to find out what the problem was. received the sandwich cold and soggy from waiting around for it, I will never recommend or go back to this Bakery/Deli.

Good NY style deli for our area

Both the wife (10 oz) and I ordered the Ruben 13 (oz). While the large still isn't the size of those massive sandwiches you get in New York, they are very respectable for the Charleston area. Oh yea, and they tasted pretty good as well. I noticed they do offer Tongue, which I love, is almost impossible to get in a city our size, and I will get the next trip. Size-wise, the sides that came with the sandwich, is very disappointing. Had I known how small they were I would have ordered extra, but it was to go and I found out too later. They were too small to get an idea how good they were or were not The last item was a chocolate cream puff of sorts. The white cream was perfect in flavor and texture, which made this a perfect finish to our meal.

Oh my goodness! On my 1st visit today, I ordered a slice of tomato pie. The portion was HUGE! It was mouth watering with just the right amount of seasoning. I also got a rum cake, which was equally divine! If you haven't tried this restaurant, it needs to be next on your list. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes, so there is something for everyone. Be sure to take a look at the cakes. I think almost all of them are 10" thick or taller!! I really can't wait to go back!

Poor Service

This is one of my favorite restaurants. The food is fabulous. Two of us tried ordering a cake for my 50th. Initially my hubby tried to order in store and the lady was extremely rude and acted like it was a huge inconvenience, so he left. I tried online which is not an option. They advertise 48 hours for cakes, so I called with 96 hours and was told without even asking what we were looking for that they were booked.

A little disappointed

For my birthday ordered takeout from here. We have eaten here a number of times and food has always been good! Today I ordered a Cluberooni and it was really good! My husband ordered a Corned Beef Reuben and the rye bread was burnt! Guess they thought they could get away with it because it was a takeout order! If you order takeout check it out before you leave! To the Mom and son from Mt Pleasant that were ahead of me and who I was recommending this deli to, I hope your food was good!

Good food I think. I had pastrami and do t have it much so not much of a reference point. Seemed a bit tough, but flavorful. Sarah had a “delicious blt with a tomato slice on it. Decent little place. Service a little off. 38.00 for 2 sandwiches and 2 teas.

Food is mediocre and expensive. Beware they charge you a hospitality AND credit card fee. RIDICULOUS! We won’t be back. Cashier is not very friendly or helpful.

I was expecting a NY deli, but it wasn’t. The bakery products look exquisite, but the ones we chose were dry. The Reuben was also tough, so all in all, it didn’t live up to it’s reputation - at least for us.
