Great Location, Service, and Food ! Well done.

The Black Marlin Bayside Grill and Hurricane Bar is in a great central location on Hilton Head. Nestled under the J. Wilton Graves (causeway) Bridge (Rte 278). We walked up the outside patio and were greeted by the hostess. We sat a nice patio table in the pines needles with a great marina view. We ordered the Island Mahi Mahi Blackened Fish Sandwich which was served with tartar sauce, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and a toasted bun which was delicious. We also ordered South Carolina craft beer outside and Margarita's when we went into the indoor bar after lunch too cool off. The hostess, waiter, and bar tender all were very friendly and professional. Black Marlin has daily live music (like most Hilton Head restaurants) and is part of the SERG restaurant group. We will definitely go back for happy hour and the live music. The Black Marlin has easy parking and great view of the marina. Cheers to the SERG group and The Black Marlin Bayside Grill and Hurricane Bar.

Good food, service, and views

Really good food and a fun atmosphere! Recommend and I would go back (really good snow crab legs)! The night we went, the service was a bit slow because they were very shorthanded. However, our super friendly and attentive waitress was fantastic and more than made up for it by giving us free (unsolicited) soups to make up for the wait time. We didn’t even mind the wait because we were just enjoying our drinks, listening to live music, and staring at the pretty water as the sun set!

We did the early dinner on a rainy night. We were blown away by the quality of the food, especially for the price. I started off with the seafood chowder. All I can say was WOW! The soup was full of seafood and definitely not from a can. Next, was a spaghetti made with white clam sauce. Really enjoyed this, too. My wife had a black bean soup and a steak & shrimp dinner that had crisp fresh veggies and a baked potato. All this plus great service for well under forty dollars. Nice find!

Had visited for my birthday and had high hopes by other reviews. The service was terrible, our waitress barely checked on us and we waited a very long time after eating to be cashed out. Although, the waitress did seem to have too many tables. The food was also not very good for the price. Our grilled shrimp was not grilled and was cold, our steamed vegetables were raw and cold and the crab legs were not cooked well and were subpar. Would not recommend and will not be going back!

We went to the Black Marlin for lunch on the recommendation of someone staying at our resort. There was a nice view of the bay from the outdoor seating but we had to ask to move inside due to the amount of flies. Our group really enjoyed the chicken liver appetizer and the hush puppies. But it went down hill from there. The main courses were disappointing. We had some of the worst crab legs that we have ever ate at a restaurant. They were exceptionally dry to the point of making us question if they were cooked the night before and reheated. The signature seafood roll was okay but the bread was not fresh and was barely toasted. The shrimp and grits was highly disappointing. The manager told the server that she was going to speak to us but never came to our table. The total bill was $130 for lunch and no one enjoyed their meal in our group of 4. We would never return and the only reason it got 2 stars was the apps and the server was pleasant. She tried unfortunately had to deal with a poor kitchen and uncaring manager.

Perfectly Breaded and Seasoned Fried Shrimp

I went for the Early Bird and ordered the fried shrimp dish, which was delicious. The breading on their shrimp is very light and fluffy, and it's always seasoned just right. I substituted seasonal veggies for the fries, and they brought both. My mom ordered the surf and turf and said her steak was flavorful and tender. Her shrimp were "crispy and fried just right". This was her first time dining at a restaurant since COVID began, so I requested a table far away from everyone when I made the reservation. I love sitting outdoors with a view of the water, and they actually moved our table off the patio and closer to the water to help with social distancing. She felt very comfortable, the staff was very good about wearing masks and not touching any items on the table (unless we requested to have something removed), and overall it was a great experience. I appreciate that they went out of their way to accommodate our request so that she felt comfortable.

We have been travelling to Hilton Head for the past 12 years and for the past 8 years or so we have enjoyed dining at the Black Marlin. The food is always very good and we enjoy the atmosphere of the restaurant. This year we were served by Mina and her service was exceptional! She was very attentive and accommodating with our menu selections.

The Forgotten Table of Six

I read the reviews and decided to make this restaurant a stop on my vacation to Hilton Head. We were a party of six and seated right away, then everything went downhill. Our drinks took a long time to come out and almost an hour for bread to make it to the table. At this point my friend complained that our appetizers were yet to be delivered and it was over an hour. A table next to us were seated after us and had just received their check! Largely speaking the food was good, although my steak could have cooked a bit more. The manager did her best to make up for the missteps earlier. Not sure if I’d give them another shot, too many other options.

The Black Marlin Bayside Grill is a great choice for dinner at Hilton Head Island. This is a dog friendly restaurant and Scooby thoroughly enjoyed her time there as she was promptly given a nice bowl of cold water and loved the attention she received. Though us people persons were given top notch service too! My wife had the Buffalo shrimp which had the right amount of heat but not over-powering and the side order of hush puppies with pimento cheese spread were absolutely delicious. I had a cup of the fish chowder and it was loaded with a parade of seafood delicacies. The grilled Mahi-Mahi tacos were equally satisfying. Our daughter had the fish & chips which she enjoyed, but did say the batter wasn’t super crisp. (The reason maybe being the amount of malt vinegar she put on her fish!). Very nice atmosphere and everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves. Loved looking at the water and the marina. Definitely a place to go when visiting HHI.

Went for lunch and our server was Jessica. She had great suggestions for food and when they ran out of our local beer suggested something else that my husband loved. The food was excellent and her happy demeanor was awesome. For our first time out since everything shut down it was amazing. Jessica was wonderful and am excited to go back again

Active fun place, but food was way overpriced for the portions

Black Marlin is primarily a tourist type of restaurant, very active bar, live music, a fun (but very crowded) place to hang out. My comment is regarding the food. The prices are tourist trap high, and the portions we received were just embarrassing. That was the experience for everyone in our party. I had the stuffed shrimp, and i received four very small shrimp, literally like 2 bites each. This for $30. I frequent several of the SERG restaurants, but I would have a hard time returning to Black Marlin.

February 26th 2020 All meals that our group of four enjoyed were of high quality and flavourful. A special mention regarding our waitress Mina who was attentive, not intrusive but always near with her pleasant demeanor and sunny disposition. She made our dining experience memorable! Local resident- Never coming back

Being a local I have been to the Black Marlin on many occasions and as the years go by the service and food continues to get worse and worse. Yesterday, I decided I am not returning as a customer. The host staff has no idea what they are doing and are not well trained. They were busy (but the tables were not full) and they were well staffed. So I couldn't understand why our server was in a terrible rush and wouldn't even let us finish a sentence when we were ordering drinks. We go to Black Marlin because we enjoy their crab legs. We have gone there for years and always order the same thing but he made the experience so unpleasant. I went to the bar and complained. There was a woman at the bar that seemed to be an off the clock manager (as she answered some of my questions) but it ended there. No one came to our table to check up on us or see how things were. If I wasn't there to celebrate a birthday I would have walked out. Very disappointing to see businesses on the island only trying to make money off of vacationers and people that they don't care about returning. The cost is also outrageous and the food is not good these days. Definitely not an upscale restaurant as one review states. Ripoff- don't go.

Early Dinner - Suggest the Deck

Arrived early enough for dinner to catch the early menu. The patio was full with an hour wait but our party of 10 was immediately seated inside. We pretty well covered the menu with our orders, from salads, a burger and chicken sandwich to seafood platters, chowder, stuffed fish, mussels and clams. Service was good and our waiter did a good job of keeping individual plates straight, and the food came out quick. Everyone enjoyed their food but it didn’t blow us away. I would say it was a solid meal and that if we’d have eaten outside that would have provided the atmosphere that would have kicked it up a notch.

Fortunately, the weather prevailed and we were able to enjoy the outside dining area for lunch. Due to the pre-season time of year, coupled with the ongoing Covid-19 conditions, the wait staff was limited, hence the service was slow. That did not bother us at all, since we were able to enjoy the fine atmosphere and beautiful weather while we waited. Adding to the enjoyment of the day were two orders of the lunch special: one Baja Taco with a cup of Seafood Chowder (highly recommend) and one order of the Tuna Tacos. Fresh fish, served hot. Delicious. Kudos to our server Hope for making this an enjoyable experience.
