Four of us from New York and Boston try to get to Charleston for eating and walking every year. Slightly North of Broad remains one of the best restaurants in the city. The food is remarkably good and the lunch prices remarkably inexpensive for this quality of food, service and ambience. The chicken livers over grits and shrimp and grits are highly recommended.

Not often can one find a lovely restaurant for lunch with a three-course very fine special for $14. S.N.O.B. delivers. First off was a small basket of tasty cornbread. Then came a butternut squash soup with a sprinkling of candied pecans on top. The entrée was fried chicken tenders on a benne waffle with collard greens and maple syrup and a tangy dipping sauce for the chicken. Tea or coffee was included for $14. Can’t beat that and the service was first class.

Rarely do I find that the design of the menu, the quality of the ingredients, the ambiance and the service come together as well as they did this evening at SNOB. This was simply an exquisite experience. Not cheap, but worth every penny. Although I'm going to describe everything, note the menu changes daily and much of this may not be what you are offered. We started with a lamb sugo tagliatelle, the pickled shrimp on devil egg toast and the charred okra. Okra is one of my favorite things, and for those of you who think it's slimy, think again. This was perfectly roasted and with a stratifying touch of smoke and a great crunch. The tagliatelle benefited from the excellent addition of some dark greens. Not ever having had pickled shrimp or devil egg toast before, all I can say is that I enjoyed this thoroughly. The tang of the shrimp was offset nicely by the smooth puree of egg. The main courses were equally excellent. The soft shell crabs were succulent, moist and gently but effectively seasoned. The BBQ tuna was silky smooth and was a classic example of letting a first rate ingredient do most of the talking. But good as there were, our duck breast was the star. It was the most creatively curated dish, with the duck plated on a Brussels Spout okonomikayi (a Japanese vegetable pancake) and accompanied by a pickled cabbage slaw with texture enhanced by a sprinking of peanuts, which also provided a Southern touch. Desserts were just heavenly. The banana pie was smooth and rich, although truth be told, much as I liked it, just hand me a bowl of those caramelized bananas they gave me one of on top. Ad the bruleed pot de creme had a complexity missing from any similar dessert. The wine list was reasonably varied with some decent less expensive bottles and a fair range. I'd only critique it by saying there was a disproportionate number of too young bottles. But that is my single criticism of SNOB. Service was impeccable: there when we wanted it, not when we didn't. Ambiance was lovely with live music and a nice buzz level of noise but never drowning out one's own conversation. And, as always, I give points for an open kitchen. This is simply one of the best restaurants in one of the bet restaurant cities in the country.

We had a somewhat disappointing visit a few years ago, but wanted to try again. I am glad we did! Our server was extremely attentive and knew everything about the menu and was very helpful to us in making our selections. The food was fantastic and was presented quickly. I am sure we will be back next year.

Salmon undercooked on salad. At least one table puts you directly behind the cashier station and slap up against the wall and smacking chairs with the person behind you as well as being less than 12 inches from the table next to you with the waiters bodies in your face. And if the hostess is sick, you get to wonder if when they cough is this getting in your food. This is not a pleasant seating arrangement. I would say it was unacceptable in any restaurant. I may go again but I will not accept that seat again and no one should be asked to sit there. I will just leave if my reservation gets me in that horrible seat again. They picked the table and gave a look to each other like I wonder if this large man will accept this tight spot where he can barely move because we don’t want to waste a 4 top on 2 people. They know how cramped it is and said “oh, we will move the table back which they did not. I did not enjoy the meal. I probably won’t return.

Over-rated. The drinks we ordered were not very good, the bar tender was extremely rude, the manager did try to make up for this by offering complimentary Prosecco for each of us, the food was good, but not spectacular for the price of each dish. I counted 3 shrimps in my shrimp and grits dish, husbands duck was very fatty, hard to eat. The restaurant was very loud, hard to have any conversation. Definitely for the younger crowd- younger than 50!

Yum yum. The waitress said the sliders were a light meal. I should have stopped after the first one. If you want your hamburger cooked more than medium rare be sure to tell the waitress. The fish was light served with al dente green beans, but again, the portion was big enough to split. That didn’t stop us from ordering their banana pie and the coconut sorbet. The pie is definitely different from the normal banana cream pie, so worth a try. Both desserts were great.

My wife and I went to S.N.O.B. in Charleston for lunch. We had a reservation and were seated after about a 10-minute wait. The waiter came to take our drink order and another person brought it to the table. There were bread plates there but we didn't get any dread? We both heard that the shrimp and grits were great there. They were a little soupy for my liking there was plenty of shrimp, but I'm used to spicier shrimp sauce. The broth, which it basically was, had a good flavor - but the sausage had virtually no taste. I would not get it again - but that's my personal preference.

We had received great recommendations for this restaurant and it exceeded our expectations. The food was excellent. My wife had scallops and I had the ahi tuna. The waiter suggested I have the tuna rare but when it came I decided I wanted it cooked more. No problem whatsoever as the waiter took it back and had it done perfectly in no time. It was delicious. I mention this to demonstrate the great service because I chose to have the tuna done more. I would return.

If you're in Charleston you MUST eat at SNOB! The service was great, and the food was absolutely delicious! My husband had the Lunch Express- a pork hash with a apple chutney and I had the Grilled Carolina Quail. Both dishes were so tasty! They had great portion sizes and what sealed the deal was an offer of gluten-free biscuits on the side! I am not able to have gluten and they had many options for me to choose from AND biscuits for me. We couldn't have been happier!

In 2013 we feel in love with a restaurant down East Bay Street called Magnolias. A week before our visit Magnolias had a kitchen fire closing down the restaurant. We needed to find another excellent restaurant that Charleston is so famous for. Slightly North of Broad met all our expectations. We were lucky that a few tables in front of the restaurant were available to our unannounced lunch visit. Would highly recommend reservations. The service was exceptional. A tall man named “Scotty” took great care of us. He alone is worth five stars. It was fun learning about his life and why he became a waiter. The sweet tea at SNOB is exceptional. So is the corn bread and honey butter offered before anything else. My wife and I split the Gazpacho soup. It was cold and definitely one of the very best Gazpacho’s we ever had. We supplemented this dish with “Steamed Clams.” The wine garlic cream sauce is exceptional. My wife enjoyed the Southern Medley of grilled chicken with various grilled vegetables. Emeril Lagasse could do no better. Scotty talked me into having Shrimp and Grits. The “Geechie Boy grits” is superb. This dish is one of the best cheese and grits plates I have enjoyed. We regret not getting their “food credit” card for $10 dollars. The highly rated restaurant directly across the street, High Cotton, is operated by the same owners. We expect to be back into Charleston in October and these places are on our bucket list. If you found this review to be “helpful” in any way, please press “LIKE” to let me know.

We had heard a lot of good things about this restaurant, so we went there for dinner. Most if the reviews rave about their lunches; maybe their lunches are better than their dinners, because our dinner was only ok, not great. Even though we had a reservation, our table was small, and right next to the kitchen, so we had an unending stream of waiters/waitresses passing right next to us -- not conducive to a quiet or pleasing atmosphere. The salmon I had was small and covered with vegetables to make it seem bigger than it was. Overall. only an ok visit, and I would not recommend it.

The restaurant is in a renovated old building near where the cruise ship docks. When they pull in, the passenger flood the shops along Meeting Street and help the restaurants all thrive. In two days the cruise industry came to a complete standstill. The gang planks were rolled up and stowed until the CD-19 virus is contained. The S.N.O.B. menu focuses on local seafood and Southern style cooking. An example of that was the warm corn bread in the bread basket. The “sweetgrass” baskets are make by local women that keep the old traditions alive. I also noticed the pretty handmade plates on the table made locally by a talented potter. This owner has recognizes there is more to restauranting than just good food. Menu items like their Beef Carpaccio have taken their inspiration from Italy. Other European influences were borrowed from Spain with white wine Sangria with slivers of pears. The stand out dish was the deep dish apple pie that the consistency of a lava cake hidden inside. Worthy of a detour!

I booked a reservation at this restaurant based on many recommendations from friends. The service was impeccable, especially during these trying times. My daughter tried a new dish which she enjoyed. It was grilled chicken with pesto and veggies. I had the gazpacho and shrimp and grits. I have a gluten allergy so they were very attentive to my needs and even brought me gluten free biscuits. The atmosphere was great, the service was fantastic and the food was good. It is a definite stop if you are in the Charleston area.
