I have been here twice and usually near closing. We love their chicken and they always fry us fresh pieces regardless of time. I am from Ohio and we make the effort to stop here when traveling south.

Today my wife and I returned for another meal. I had the Stew Beef over rice, collards and Lima beans. My wife had the fried Chicken, mac-n-cheese and sweet potatoes. I think I could eat their stew beef every day for weeks and not get tired of it. My wife loved the coating on the chicken and also the bread... More

This is southern style home cooking. It's not fancy food. It's not foodie food. It's not trendy food. I highly doubt there is anything certified organic or vegan or non-GMO. But they do have great southern food at a good price. And you will find a line waiting at the door when they open. I liked the fried chicken, the... More

If you want REAL southern "soul" food while in Charleston, you need to go to Bertha's. There are actually a good number of soul food places (all hole in the walls) but Bertha's was one of the first I visited, and I have continued going for years. My go to is the lima beans...if you want to get down with... More

Food was good but those Lima beans were off the chain! You can get a leg quarter with Lima beans and a veggie for $4.50!!! There was a lot of people coming and going. The kitchen area was busy and there was a really cute lil baby girl watching everything go down! We had fried pork chops, cabbage, okra soup.... More

The price was good. The size of portion a bit small. Most people were taking togo . We sat and ate. The resterant is small, staff very... More

Stayed in Charleston few days to try different soul and local food. Bertha's is the best taste you find. Just remember this is a very popular place and sometimes line is long during lunch hours. Must visit and don't mind driving 80 miles for the food. .Price is really good and almost third of what you pay at other Comercialized... More

When you pull up to Bertha's after hearing so many wonderful reviews, you look at it skeptically. Sure it's a weird color, but it can't be that good can it? You open the door expecting to step in only to realize, everyone has squeezed in the door to get in line be they dining in or out. Everyone from all... More

We came for lunch after hearing a recommendation from a cab driver as well as reading reviews online. It's located in an unassuming building on Meeting St., about 4 miles out of downtown Charleston. Most patrons seemed to be ordering food to go, and we were the only ones sitting at the restaurant at around 2pm. It's a very basic... More
