We have eaten often at Rue de Jean so we thought it would be good during covid times. We felt safe there and table distancing was obvious. The menu was diminished, which I guess is understandable - fortunately we planned on burgers and fries. The...burgers are usually good and they were this time, however, the fries seemed “old”, not just made. This doesn’t mean we won’t come back again, maybe when covid times are over.More

We arrived early evening into CHS and after getting to our hotel we ventured out for dinner. We had targeted 39 RDJ and on a Saturday evening we had no problems getting a table. Initially we were seated right next to the entrance to the...to the outside dining area but the draft was too cold and we asked to be moved as long as we could maintain our waitperson, Aaron. This was accommodated and we were much more comfortable at the newer table location. The ambiance of the restaurant makes for a proper dining experience. The waitstaff is alert and well-schooled by the restaurant. We ordered the Tempura Shrimp Roll and the Moules Mariniere. We were not expecting a Japanese roll to be on the menu but it was fine and a nice complement to our other entree. Coming from an area with plenty of sushi restaurants the offering here was well done. The Grande serving of mussels was wonderfully satisfying. We made sure to keep some of the table bread to sop up some of the broth. If we make it back to Charleston it would be nice to come back to 39 RDJ and try some of their additional offerings.More

This is a very nice French restaurant, although they have sushi on Thursdays for some reason. The bread that comes out at the beginning is fantastic, nice and warm and very tasty. Save some to mop up any of the sauces you get on your...entrees! The escargot is a bit above average, but not the best we have ever had. The entrees were a hit. I had the scallops, which were perfectly cooked. They really are the marshmallows of the seas. The rest of the table had the shrimp Provencal, and the trout almondine. The sounds of yum from the table was indicative of how good the seafood was made. The sides were ok and complemented the entrees. We only two of the desserts, the chocolate torte and the creme brulee. Both were good, but what you would expect from both. The server was attentive and made some good recommendations throughout the meal. I recommend the seating in the alley for the ambience.More

Nice restaurant just off King St. The food is excellent as are the cocktails. The outdoor seating has some ambiance, is not on the street. Excellent service.

French onion soup and frisee salad were outstanding. My fish dish had a very strong taste - but once I told the server she immediately got the manager who replaced that with my 2nd choice of garlic and basil mussels - they were phenomenal! Service...like that (even with a smile) is not the norm. Roquefort Filet steak frittes hubby got was really good also! Will definitely recommend and go back!More

This restaurant has great food, great service and a very friendly staff. On a rainy, showery night, we got a table outside, but undercover. So we were dry the entire meal and still be outdoors. This place is located on a neat alley, that has...other resttaurants on it and a fair amount of foot traffic. It was a very relaxing place to eat and we loved itMore

I traveled to Charleston to drop my daughter off at college and on our last night together we decided to go to 39 Rue de Jean. It was an amazing meal and I have nothing but nice things to say about the food, the atmosphere...and the service.More

Went there to celebrate special anniversary dinner. Live 90 miles away. Their website offers special "happy hour" drink and appetizer prices from 4 to 6PM. Our reservation was for 4PM. We get there at 4PM and sit down and I go to order 3 appetizers...and confirm that I would be charged the advertised and discounted happy hour prices. Restaurant responds by saying no, they are not offering those discounted prices. This is not a Mom and Pop operation so not keeping their website current is inexcusable. Well rather than fight, make a scene and ruin the meal which I rarely go to restaurants, I went ahead and ordered 3 appetizers at prices that I should not have had to pay and Steak and Frites at market price. Huge mistake as the tiny (looked like less than 8 ounces) thin $38.00 steak came out partially charred/burned, lukewarm and tasteless with a couple of frites. Massive disappointment and what I consider open and flagrant deceit on the part of this restaurant.More

39 Rue de Jean on John Street in Charleston is an excellent place for quality, delicious, and well prepared meals in a fun atmosphere. Eating here is like going to a different place as you are transformed and feels different. Everything on the menu is...flavorful and tastes good whether it be a simple burger and fries or something more complex. I have had a really good experience coming here throughout the years.More

Yes the mussels do live up to the hype and we couldn’t stop dipping the warm French bread into the broth! Trout Almondine, Scallops and Steak frites were all tasty entrees. Our server, Maggie, was top-notch w/apt suggestions & so attentive. Thanks to another experienced...& top-notch server & friend, Edward, for comping our mussels & securing us a great table location-had a view of the classy yet comfortable dining room. Restaurant sparkled, servers all masked, tables socially distanced-well-run. Perfect.More
