Whenever I'm at home in Chicago or on vacation in Sarasota, Florida, I always purchase eight pints of ice cream at the local Kilwin's Chocolate and Ice Cream Shop to satisfy my sweet tooth for a month. But what do I do when I'm in...Charleston, South Carolina, for only a week? I'll tell you later. Kilwin's is an old-fashioned confectionary chain selling Original Recipe and Kosher certified ice cream, chocolates, hand-made sweets, hand-made fudge, peanut brittle, caramel apples, truffles, caramel corn and gift baskets. The Michigan-based chain opened in 1947 and has grown to include 46 locations in 25 states. Open from 10 to 10 daily, the Kilwin's location at 59 South Market Street, adjacent to the historic City Market, between Church and State streets, offers everything that is available in the stores in Chicago and Sarasota. Chocolate is the No. 1 seller, a scoop ahead of turtle fudge and sea salt caramel fudge. But my taste goes in a different direction. I left Kilwin's on Market with two bags of peanut butter, a pound of German chocolate fudge, a pound of Mackinaw Island fudge and a bag of caramel corn for my wife. Of the 38 flavors of ice cream, I ordered eight pints--butter pecan, toasted coconut, Georgia peach, cookies and cream, chocolate chip, chocolate chip cookie dough, strawberry crunch and raspberry sorbet. The beauty of Kilwin's is you can choose eight ice cream flavors on one visit, then choose eight different flavors on the next trip and love every scoop.More
