About
Located at the East Passage Yachting Center in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, The Gulf Stream Bar and Grille focuses on creating a comfortable, friendly dining experience. The main dining room, indoor bar and dog-friendly outdoor deck and bar provide stunning sunset and water views. The Gulf Stream Bar and Grille's creative menu offers coastal cooking with a New England Twist - taking delicious recipes from regions along the Gulf Stream, adding our own New England style and offering them to you. We use only the highest quality products, locally sourced and organic when possible. All of our dishes are house-made with the freshest ingredients and we proudly support our local farmers and fishermen. We are housed in an original Quonset Hut, built in 1942 as part of the US Navy's PT-Boat Training Center at Melville. The space was converted into a restaurant over 30 years ago and began operation as The Gulf Stream Bar and Grille in May, 2016.

It's not a bad place, but I won't be eager to return.
The location is on the water, but unfortunately a lot of their outside dining faces the parking lot or buildings.
On a July Sunday at lunch time they were busy, and appeared a but understaffed .... but I know that's common this year. The server was cheerful and efficient.
But lunch was ... just OK. Not bad, but not better than 'OK." Hush puppies were pleasant enough, but the clam chowder was seriously short on clams - and seriously overpriced, too. The burger just didn't have a fresh appearance and was startlingly bland. The fries were pretty good, but at the end of the meal I had to conclude the bill was just too high for Appleby's-level cuisine.
Again, not bad: we finished our lunches, and nobody was complaining. But no one seemed particularly pleased, either. I wouldn't refuse to go back, but I sure wouldn't make a special trip to do it.

We went to the Gulf Stream for lunch. We ordered the fish and chips and the vege tacos. I love the environment and the wait staff was attentive but I have to say that the food was bland - everything seemed to need more salt or spice or something. Otherwise the place is great. I will give it another try because I like the place.

The last dinner of our recently concluded 7-night vacation was at this restaurant that overlooks a shipyard. We started off by sharing their eponymous calamari (flash fried rings tossed in a light cream sauce with hot cherry peppers and chorizo). These were good, but a little on the chewy side. This is not a gourmet restaurant by any stretch so my wife wisely chose fish & chips for an entree. I went a tiny bit rogue by ordering the Bermuda fish chowder. Mine included both a shot of rum and a sherry peppers sauce that I judiciously added to the otherwise mediocre hake-based chowder.

We were extremely lucky to get a table on Mother's Day. The cocktail called the "painkiller" was awesome. The brunch.....uuummm not so much. We had the pork belly bowl: sweet potato tots (from frozen) fried pork belly pieces and an over cooked fried eggs over top. Fried calamari was ok.

We were camping in the area and my husband uses google earth to find locations for food (yes, he's a wicked foody). We knew we were eating out Saturday and I had concentrated my efforts on Newport, which was a bad idea as everything was crazy busy! So we ended up going to The Gulf Stream as it was close to our campground and we were NOT disappointed! They had hushpuppies on the appetizer menu and they were phenomenal! We don't see a lot of restaurants up North that offer hushpuppies and they totally dominated the ones we were used to getting in South Carolina. The dipping sauce had an awesome kick to it, The staff were super friendly, our waitress (Ashley) was super attentive to us and took good care of us. I had the tacos (with the beef) and hubby had the mussells and we did NOT leave there hungry. We will go back again!!

We love visiting The Gulf Stream. The food is always good, the drinks are delicious, and we love bringing our puppy to enjoy some snacks on the patio.
Most importantly they also do a great job of making us feel safe and clean during the pandemic.

At a $148 Bill that is bad odds. I got the Bermuda soup, I was starving when done. Picture paying $15 for a bowl of stewed tomatoes and diced celery. Tiny flakes of fish that were microscopic. I asked the cook when he delivered , and he said that’s how it suppose to be. I looked up the recipe online, and it looked hefty, not like mine. For that reason, never will I return. The roast sandwich was good, as was the fried fish and chips. The Stuffed quohog was grainy with corn, And was not held together, it was a crumbly mess. The chowder was nothing special I was told, and it looked canned. The Moscow mule was awful, and not drinkable. It was our first time out because of the virus, and it was a huge disappointment. This restaurant is over rated. Sorry guys but you have 1 less family to worry about. . .

We have eaten at Gulf Stream several times over the past few years. Our meals have always been great. The Fried Chicken Sandwich, The Debri Sandwich, Tacos, Gumbo, Ribeye Steak, everything has been excellent. The food has a New Orleans flare, so you're not going to get your typical RI Stuffie, but its still just as good if not better than many on the Island. The Kids menu is great, our daughter religiously gets the chicken and waffles. Their Calamari is one of the best around, very filling so certainly share as an appetizer. Hits a great hidden gem on the water in a beautiful area of Porstmouth, so you can hit it on your way into Newport or on your way out.

We went here for lunch on a warm summer day. They were doing a great job in the COVID environment and as we had my 75 year old mother in law there we appreciated their adherence to the rules and regulations BUT the BEST was the food!!! We shared calamari I had the fried chicken and could eat it everyday My mother in law had the fish and chips and loved it. Additionally I had the best margarita to complete a great meal. Service was prompt and on point

We dined here on our first night in Portsmouth for vacation and it was a great introduction to the RI food scene. The wait staff was both professional and efficient at receiving our party to our table. The food was delicious and flavorful. Kim, our waitress was another highlight to our dinner as she took the time to answer our questions and recommend local hot spots for our party to visit. Casual Americana seafood faire- affordable and importantly friendly staff. Will definitely visit again next we are in Portsmouth;.

we discovered this little gem a few years back when we were camping in Newport. Ten years later and we still go. LOVE the debris sandwich and we traveled 30 miles. . just for the calamari until recently we were so disappointed to get it with the tentacles instead of just the rings. This won't keep us away just wanted to let you know how unappetizing this is !!

We really like the food because it's not cookie cutter but if you want something straight-forward it's here as well. Very reliable and good options no matter what you're in the mood for. I'm also writing because we had a great server tonight. Ashley. She was engaging and high energy and helpful. She's a great asset to the restaurant.

While waiting to enjoy the Rail Explorers we stopped at the Gulf Stream for lunch. Excellent lunch, clean, friendly, efficient staff, and peaceful. Parking is hard to find but with some patience it will happen. Also if you arrive before it gets busy, its no problem. We sat outside on the deck, nice experience and pet friendly. I had the Debris sandwich and it was sooo good. Two other people in my party had the Blackened Salmon BLT. Salmon cooked perfectly and moist. The other person in my party had the Arugula Salad. All the food was fresh and well prepared. The staff was friendly and efficient.

All of the food here is so fresh, you can tell that they really care about quality. In my experience the food has always come in a timely manner, and made the way I have asked for it. I typically ask for no tomato, or a little extra a something to make my meal work for me. Fun-the staff is friendly and the music is great!

We ate here last week outside after dark and it was lovely. The calamari is the best on the island (but we should probably keep that a sercret) fish and chips is also a delicious, and I've been known to eat the entire plate of nachos with veggies by myself. It's welcoming and fun place to be, it's off the beaten path. They have done great with COVID restrictions and there's plenty of space. Thank you for another great meal!
