My wife and I were in York recently for the biannual York Train Meet and went to dinner one evening at the Paddock, as it seemed to be an upscale restaurant and was rated #4 in the York area. We had made a reservation and...arrived on time. The parking lot was full, so we parked on the street. We were promptly seated at a small table for two along the back window facing the parking lot. There was an immediate problem. It was a very chilly evening, but for some reason, the air conditioning was on and my chair was right next to a floor vent which was blowing cold air onto me. There was no need for A/C on such a chilly night. If anything, the heat should have been on, but there was really no need for either, and certainly no need for A/C. It was bizarre. I politely asked the server to please turn off the air conditioning or at least turn it way down, but she said there was nothing she could do about it, because it was controlled automatically. Frankly, I was not at all convinced by her answer. There was also no offer to move us to another table. The best I could do was place a menu over the vent and hold it down with my foot, while wearing the heavy sweatshirt I wore to the restaurant the rest of the time we were there. Strike 1. We then attempted to order a bottle of wine, or glasses of wine other than the cheap house wines, which all came from the same winemaker, as Paddock's online and actual menus indicated that the had such wines available. However, to our surprise, we were told by the server that they only had wines by the glass, and they were all the house wines. What a bummer and it was very misleading advertising as well. My wife then ordered a glass of house wine. I decided to order a draft beer and asked our server to review their draft list, but she told me that they had no such list. She then rattled off the draft beers they had at a brisk pace that was a challenge to process. I ordered an IPA. Strike 2. We both ordered, starter salads, the Haddock entrees - with extra lemons, and some dinner sides. The vegetables in the salads were blah, although the dressing was pretty good. The entrees arrived before we were finished our salads, a no-no. That should never happen in a good restaurant. The pieces of haddock were huge and too big for even me to finish, and I never leave food on the table. My wife was barely able to eat half of hers, and I ate about 2/3 of mine. The fish was delicious, but what a waste to have to throw out nearly a whole entree. The server should have let us know in advance that the portions of haddock were huge, and we then would have ordered only one. Also, the lemons we had ordered were not delivered with the entree. May seem like a small point, but it is a pet peeve of mine. The sides that came with our meals were barely warm, and were just OK, nothing special. Strike 3.
The experience we had was nothing like what we expected. With all of the issues we experienced, notably mediocre food and substandard service, there is no way that this restaurant could possibly be the #4 restaurant in York. Needless to say, we will never return.More
