We ordered the Scotch Eggs which were cooked to perfection! My husband then had the Shepherd's Pie and I had the Cuban sandwich. Everything was delicious and served by an adorable young lady named Iris. We did not know the history of the building so...it was nice to read the flyer they provided while we looked around. We will go back again sometime soon! A wonderful cozy place! They also have a separate room for private parties which is nice. Although we did not have a reservation, I would strongly recommend it during busier hours as the place was full with folks waiting in line by the time we had finished our early dinner.More

We were on a quick trip from Pittsburgh and after looking at reviews decided to give Speckled Hen a try. The reviews are right! This place has great service and delicious food all at very reasonable prices. I had their butternut squash soup and falafel...burger. My husband had a scotched egg followed by steak with red potatoes and spiraled zucchini. Lovely historical cabin and a cute bar. Would go anytime we were in Reading.More

It was our first time dining there with friends who highly recommended it. It will now be our "go to" whenever we are hungry for fish and chips. The lightly battered Alaskan cod was so fresh and light tasting that it felt like it melted...in our mouths. The french fries were cooked to perfection and complemented the fish nicely without the results of a heavy oily belly bomb. The portions are substantial so I ended up taking a third of my meal home which when I heated up in my toaster oven, it was still yummy and moist. The entrees are reasonably priced but hubby ordered a coconut cake off the dessert menu which didn't give prices and ending up costing about two thirds of the meal. He said it was good but overpriced. The seating decor inside and out is casual yet intimate. Moreover, we had great service. Although there seems to be ongoing road construction around the city of Reading, there is plenty of parking across the street from the restaurant. When we return, it will be hard not to order the F & C but we may just have to try their other delectable offerings. Definitely worth the hour drive for a great meal.More

Our first time here, we were concerned about parking but that was no problem! When we were seated we were given shoofly bread, never had it before! It was very good! We had appetizers, wings, Brussels sprouts and Scottish egg. All very good!!! Dinner was...steak and crab cakes, with mash potatoes, it was delicious!! We didn’t have any complaints coming here and would go again!!More

Stopped here for a dinner before attending a show. I didn't know what to expect, as it was selected off an internet search of nearby places to eat before we saw the show. The front door to the establishment doesn't work (for a reason), and...one has to enter through another restaurant on Cherry Street. It added to the overall atmosphere of the place. There is a sign on the wall that states that the building was constructed in 1784, is made entirely of logs, and is the oldest building in the City. Wait staff was quick, friendly, and attentive. Ordered the "Speckled Hen", which is the last item on the entree menu, but should be the first. Small roasted chicken with sausage and apple stuffing. Can't say enough good things about the meal. Hot, juicy, and very tasty. As the time went on, it became crowded, but the noise level did not rise to become annoyingly loud. The open fireplace in the main dining room is a nice and warming touch. Definiely a place to return to. Well worth the trip.More

We were looking for a restaurant near our hotel on a Thursday at 5 pm. We stumbled upon this place and are glad we did. The place itself is very charming. The food excellent. Service was great. When we were there, there were very few...patrons, so I don’t know if it becomes a noisy place at other times. But when we were there, it made for a quiet, relaxing meal. Will definitely be back!More

We only stayed for a drink at the bar. Wish we could have stayed longer. The woman at the bar was very nice and informative about local events and sites. We enjoyed the pumpkin scotch ale, real fire, half-timbered walls and candle lit tables. As...I understand, this pub is in the oldest building in Reading.More
