I have not traveled that far in several years. That said, it looks to me like somewhere in Virginia or Kentucky would be your best bet, for "half way", but that is an ambitious run. You'd probably arrive safer and saner by making it a "two-nighter", staying somewhere near Cumberland MD, and then Chattanooga TN or even Atlanta GA. I would choose one motel group - like Comfort Inns or Best Western - and check their accommodations on-line. Multiple stays with the same motel chain may give you a free night, perhaps on the way back. It's worth checking them out.
