My wife and I rode our Harleys from Pittsburgh to historic Brownsville, Pa., to visit an old church on a hill where her grandparents, both Italian immigrants, got married in 1927. Turns out the entire little town on a hill, with the old National Road...running through it and the Monongahela River valley below it, shared a historic quaintness, old building stock, and fascinating histories going back to steel-making coke ovens, whiskey distilleries, and the French-Indian War.
While aging not so gracefully, we could see the potential of the area, given the right unified economic development vision, a bit of new industry (such as tourism), and some committed entrepreneurs willing to take a chance.
We found that in a beautiful, hidden gem of a restaurant that would more than fulfill our desire for a nice early dinner surrounded by history. The Twelve Oaks Restaurant & Tavern on Water Street surprised us, frankly, with its period ambiance, soft music and white-table-cloth style. It was housed in what was known as the old Thompson House, an eloquent three-story mansion with large oak staircases and creative woodwork.
Friendly owners checked on us periodically, and the waitress was warm and attentive. We opted for the tavern, given our biker decorum, which simply meant we could order from either menu. So I had an appetizer of delicious hot wings, followed by a picture-perfect pasta and chicken entree full of flavor. My wife started with lentil soup and a salad, followed by some kind of smoked chicken pasta dish. Hats off to the chef on all accounts.
Unexpected, indeed, and now we have a great destination for future rides. Thanks.More
