Dating back to 1681, The Broad Axe Tavern is one of America's oldest taverns. Reopened in May of 2009 after undergone a multi-million dollar renovation. We welcome you to come in to see and enjoy this historic land mark. The pointed stone, hardwood and slate tiled floors give the restaurant its old world charm. Its leather booths, wood tables and iron fixtures also give it a casual elegance. The menu is a eclectic mix of small plates for grazing, grilled pizzas, large plates and tavern sandwiches. Guest favorites include Steamed Mussels, Seafood Chowder and Crab Cakes, NY Strip Steak and our Award-Winning BBQ Ribs. A great place to meet and greet with sixteen craft and imported beers on tap, over 175 bottled beers from around the world for your enjoyment. Or try a bottle of wine from our 21 Club, 38 Special list. We also have high end Premium wines or one of our great wines by the glass. Daily drink specials include happy hour 5-7pm.

The Broad Axe Tavern is old. It's one of the older taverns in the country. That being said it does not have the old feel. Which kind of bummed me out. I love going to historic taverns and experiencing them the way our forefathers and the generations that followed have. The inside of the tavern looks like an upscale Applebee's.... More

After an effort to identify and visit America's oldest taverns, including recently the 1673 White Horse Tavern in Newport, RI and the 1696 Old Yarmouth Inn on Cape Cod we looked with great anticipation at visiting this 1686 establishment #2 on the list. What a disappointment! Had we not done our research if we just happened on this we would... More

Recently stopped in here for lunch with a friend. The menu is pretty big which can be quit overwhelming b/c there is so much that sounds good. I ordered the taco shell with chicken- Its' huge and served in a big tortilla shell- I didn't think I would eat it, but it was good that I did. They have a... More

Went here for happy hour with friends. A nice beer selection, decent specials, and they offer beer flights to sample more. We had a fun time, except that traffic was difficult to get thru at 5:00pm.

From the moment you approach the Broad Axe, you're reminded of our regional history. The lesson continues as you walk through the doors and learn of the history of the Broad Axe. Once seated, the ambiance of a quaint old Philadelphian tavern quickly turns into a poorly maintained, slightly confining variety of dining areas with wobbly tables, and weak lighting.... More

How in the world is this joint still open? I imagine the extensive beer list is the reason because the food is alarmingly bad. I ordered the dry rubbed ribs (which was a special) with corn and chorizo mac and cheese. The purpose of the dry rub is to create a crust on the outside of the rib so the... More

Good lunch choices, attentive and friendly service but not precise - chicken sandwich ordered without bacon came with bacon, soup not served until reminded. Good place on a Tuesday for conversation; dinner experience was much higher volume. The renovation is still amazing.
