After reading the reviews we thought the top rated place in Bellefonte would be a good place to go for lunch. We were wrong. We got seated right away, and our mostly friendly waitress came over and took our orders. I started with corn chowder, evidently a staple there so it must be good, right? It took almost 15 minutes just to get the chowder, and then when it did come, it was covered in yellow cheddar cheese with croutons under. It was at best unseasoned sad potato soup with frozen corn, even my wife thought it tasteless. Then we waited and waited and waited, and the waitress came over after another 20 minutes or so and told us soon. My wife ordered the cigar rolls, supposed to be Korean BBQ wrapped in a shell, she said it was okay, kind of like short ribs, but certainly not Korean flavors by any stretch. I order the chicken and waffle, after reading good reviews and my experience of having delicious chicken and waffle previously. Well, lets see, the chicken was cooked alright, somewhat juicy and again not seasoned, it was covered in white gravy, also tasteless, and the waffle, well it tasted of vanilla? Not sweet, no hint of maple syrup, but with salt and pepper the chicken was okay. My side of cole slaw, well, again not seasoned, see a trend here? We will not go back. We absolutely can't understand the good reviews or the number of people there, maybe we ordered exactly the wrong things, I don't know.

Stopped here for dinner while visiting Penns Cave. Big menu with lots of interesting items on it. We started with crab stuffed pretzels and Korean cigars. Both tasty. For dinner I got the ahi tuna salad. It wasn’t my favorite, tuna didn’t taste like it was seasoned with anything, very bland, inlaws got chicken n waffles. Huge portions & very tasty. Hubs got shepherds pie which he enjoyed. Kids got grilled cheese & pizza. It says they come with cookies but the waiter said they didn’t have any because of the pandemic? Very small inside, we had 6 people and 3 tables had to be pushed together. Service was great. They did have outdoor seating as well but it was raining. I’d def stop back in if I was in the area.

Great place for lunch and dinner. Service is always quick, and I've never had food that was anything but fresh, hot, and tasty. Chicken and Chips is what I usually do. Portions are large. Desserts are tasty too. It's nice to eat out on the deck when the weather is nice...as long as you don't mind the overcompensating motorcycle drivers 'cleaning out their pipes' at the nearby traffic light. Only has on-street parking but it's usually easy to find a spot that is nearby. The only downside...it's not the cleanest-looking restaurant around. I will never understand how restaurant staff do not notice food splatters on walls and dust on pictures/chair rail/light fixtures...

We really enjoyed our dinner at the pub. We’d normally shy away from pubs because their menu tends to be all the same and often subpar. However it was recommended by the locals and the menu had a couple notable items that stood out. This pub does deliver a notch above. We were VERY grateful for ample outdoor seating in the age of COVID.
Jasmine took good care of us.
The pierogis are distinctly good.

Corn chowder, reuben, chicken flat bread sandwich, chicken tenders, fries.. these dishes sound ordinary but believe me, they are not! Freshly prepared, slight twist on ingredients. And wait until you try the in-house prepared desserts! German chocolate cake for 2- each piece is hugh. Bread pudding is great. Many beers on tap- too many to taste everyone.

Thank you for the review. Our food is all cooked to order, some with our own twist on some classic sandwiches. Glad you liked the Creamy Corn Chowder, Corned Beef Reuben, Chicken Flat Bread Sandwich and Hand Breaded Chicken Tenders. Our desserts are all made in house from scratch, and our beer selection will delight anyone. Thanks again for the comments!

My husband and I stopped here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon before antiquing. Sara was our waitress and she did a great job.
I had the fish sandwich and fries and he had the chicken and waffles meal. We were both really hungry when we got there, so we ordered cheese curds. These were very plain and under-seasoned on their own, but the honey mustard sauce did help the flavor. That was the first time we had cheese curds with mustard and not marinara, as we are used to. My fish came out and I was expecting a thick piece of fish on my bun, but my fish was thin and not very meaty. The sandwich did have great toppings on it, so it did have a good taste when eaten all together. The fries were seasoned well and had some herbs on them, enhancing the flavor. My husband’s chicken and waffles came out piping hot (major bonus) and had two substantial pieces of chicken on it. He enjoyed it, but was craving more flavor from the gravy.
We would return if we’re back in Bellefonte; it was a friendly place with a cool little cafe/pub vibe.

Wanted to try because of Tv commercials plus pass it all the time working. Got seated right way, place looked dingy, floor not swept was being harassed by flies. Got a Pepsi and a Glass of water, I guess since the Pepsi had ice the water was not allowed any. The wife’s was the same way. The wife got the shepherds pie and I got the hand breaded chicken strips the strip were big and you got Three pieces but they lacked seasoning and were kind of dry. French Fries we’re great.

Located only 1/2 block up High St. from the river, park and visitors center, the Governor's Pub had good food, great atmosphere and some reasonable beer prices. It's a cozy little place with some street view seats and a nice little bar. They have a nice menu, and my wife liked her Shepherd's pie that came out extremely hot. I went for the crab cake sandwich for a 2nd time on this trip and was concerned about it being so far from the Baltimore area, but it was decent. It could had used a little more crab and some additional seasoning/Old Bay, but all in all not bad. It was large and took up the entire very good roll.
It was nice to see quite a few beers in the $3.25-$4.25 range and we tried the new, New Trail State Light pints on tap and liked it. It's a light beer with a little more body than most of your traditional domestic light beers. This could soon become the new beer of Penn State with that can design we saw on the poster hanging in the restaurant. Our waitress Sara was very good and if ever in Bellefonte again, this would be our 1st stop for food. We just loved the quirky/quaint atmosphere. Also, it looks like there is an additional tavern, called Talleyrand's connected to it that is only open Wednesday-Sunday with late night hours and with a little outside area.

Sat at the bar for 20 minutes before the bartender even pretended to notice me. I asked for a bloody mary she mumbled something unintelligible, I waited another 2o minutes with no response from any one so I left. I understand there was a car show going on but they did not seem over whelmed. Very poor service. Won't be going back.

We were driving home from a family weekend, 3 hours left to go. Bellefonte was the town we decided to take look for gas and food. The Governors Pub was the cutest, cleanest little restaurant. Rita was friendly and gave us a little history lesson on the town, she told us that everything on the menu is homemade. We had the best corned beef sandwich a delicious burger and ahi tuna salad. Blueberry cobbler for dessert, we finished everything and could have stayed for more if we weren't 3 hours from home.

This is a great place. Nice little bar and a good size dining area. I had the cheeseburger and fries and it was perfect!! The roll was brioche and was right in every way. The burger was cooked perfectly medium well. Still juicy!! The fries are maybe the best fresh cuts I’ve ever had. Perfectly cooked with a seasoning that’s 😱 Amazing!! Tried this place because another was closed and I’m sad to say the other place will be seeing less of us.

What a great meal and pleasant experience we enjoyed at the Governor's Pub! Their menu is so interesting, I wanted to try so many of the appetizers and the menu was very creative. I went way outside my comfort zone with a "falafel burger" and settled on "cigar rolls" with Korean barbecue, napa cabbage and smoked white cheddar fried in a tortilla! Reasonably priced and pleasant atmosphere with good service. Great patio I would guess rocks on a nice evening.

A new go to for our family! Not many local restaurants allow dogs on their patio, and this restaurant has an extremely dog friendly patio! Their food and service is excellent as well. I really have enjoyed the fresh breaded chicken tenderloins and the turkey club the two times we have visited. Really want to try the perogies, but they always run out by the time we get there!

While driving home to Ohio from Massachusetts, we stopped on Bellefonte, Pa, a beautifully maintained Victorian town, for a late lunch. At random, we chose The Governor's Pub, not knowing what to expect. What a good choice! I especially enjoyed ROSIE'S PIEROGIES - although in Slovak, I had PIROHIS. Both of our entrees were filling and delicious. Especially pleasing was perfectly achieved service by our server, in spite of a packed dining room and patio. I will definitely plan to stop again on my occasional trips to New England. It was well worth the short detour from I-80.

Two of us ordered the mushroom swiss burger. Beef was utterly tasteless. The bun was as hard as a rock. the onion was raw not cooked. The other three in our party said their meals were OK. One of our party got the turkey rueben and the other two got the mushroom and artichoke sandwich. Service was fine as well as atmosphere. They do not have any domestic beers.
