Funny little place, food was pretty good. However when we arrived, every single table but one was dirty, covered with dishes. The waitress said “sit where you want”, but all the dirty tables with food & dishes on them really grossed me out. There was...only one other diner there at the time, so it wasn’t like the waitress was busy, guess she just didn’t want to bus tables.More

Excellent! Ordered in and was delivered with style. Loved the spinach leaves with assorted condiments and Thai iced tea. The veggie pad Thai was plentiful! Couldn’t finish all of it. Will visit or order from again for sure.

On our first night in Portland on our latest visit we decided to give this SE Belmont Street Thai eatery a try for some takeout. We’d arrived late in the afternoon after driving 5.5 hours on the I5 and just wanted something hot, comforting and...affordable. We’ve been by Mai Thai countless times on previous stays but never bothered to check it out for some reason. The place isn’t big but it’s clean and well organized. We placed our order after getting some helpful advice from the young woman at the counter and after about 15 minutes it was bagged up and ready to go. It probably helped that we did go in on a slow night for this restaurant so I can’t comment on wait times during regular or peak hours. The portions are quite fair for the prices and the food was well prepared. We thought the green papaya salad was a surprise hit and very spicy, too! Our other dishes were just as good. We will make future visits to Mai Thai.More

I was served the incorrect dish and owner would not refund. Customers are rushed. I ordered chicken satay and was served Tofu. I told the waiter 3 times CHICKEN as his English was less than understandable. There are many Portland Thai restaurants where one is...served with respect and not distracted confusionMore

This is a very good Thai restaurant. Beautiful presentation. Some food was spicy. We ordered from today's specials. All were good. The Crispy Wontons were excellent. Nothing was greasy.

Smaller building, they have a parking lot for customers which was great. Outdoor patio area, nice environment, warm feeling, not super fancy but nice. Went here with my partner for dinner and was super happy to know there were a lot of vegan options! We...got the Massaman curry, coconut rice, and the Drunken Noodle dishes both with veggies and tofu. Medium spiciness. We love spicy! And Medium was just perfect for us. Hot enough but not too hot so you can still taste all the flavors. Be sure to let them know when you are ordering that you want everything to be vegan. They seemed to have a great understanding of what vegan means which was really helpful. The prices were really good too! We got all this food for about $20 Enough for both of us to be full and have a bit to take to go!More

Ate lunch here. Food was good and hot but I asked the wait staff 3 times about the dish I wanted to order and did it have lots of vegetables and was assured it did. I also asked for it between medium and hot on...a scale that included xhot and xxhot. There were over 1 tablespoon of red pepper flakes in the bottom of my bowl when I finished. Also, the receipt was brought to the table while we were still eating. What's up with that. Restaurant was not even half full. Rounded up because the food is light and fresh but service needs improvement.More

This neighborhood gem has it all-excellent fresh food with all the wonderful Thai flavors done perfectly and beautifully presented, a quiet comfortable atmosphere and excellent and prompt service. Usually no wait for a table although with this quality there should be!

A recent trip to Portland had us searching out Thai restaurants. Mai Thai had several good reviews. It actually was our second choice but choice number one was closed and I'm glad it was. This was the best Thai food I have had! The flavors...were nicely blended and seasoned. The veggies cooked to perfection! We asked for "3" spice for hotness out of four. We enjoy the heat and this did not disappoint! Not too much and had kind of a cumulative effect. I can't wait to go back! I would eat this six nights a week if we were closer! The location is a bit out of the way but well worth it. I hope you give Mai Thai a try!More

This is a really nice little Thai restaurant with excellent food and prices. The ambiance is quite pleasant and it's near the Belmont and Hawthorne districts. Sometimes we get take out but usually eat on their patio during warmer months or inside when it's cooler....The standard pad thai is good, but the Chef's specials and the "Thai Street Food" are great.More

I just wanted some good Thai take out in Portland. The folks on the phone line were lovely and the young guy that delivered it was super polite. But the food? I am not a spice wimp. Having never ordered from this particular location, I...opted for medium heat (2 out of 4). The food arrived and the driver was lovely. However, within the first fifteen minutes after we dived into the food, my mouth alit with flame. I am not afraid of some good heat in Thai food, but just hitting the chili zone without any sophistication is a cheap sell. I like good heat. I hate cheap heat. I called the restaurant to give them the benefit of the doubt. They said "spicy is really subjective, you must have gotten it wrong." So, I explained again. "I've been to Thailand, I get Thai heat, but I couldn't even eat half the food and my mouth is still on fire three hours later." They were unsympathetic, attributing my discomfort to my own sensitivities. If I'd had their heat and thought some might like it, some might not, I wouldn't be writing. But the gun to the head heat that I am still experiencing just isn't' that. The "subjective" line just doesn't work. If I owned this restaurant, i would bend over backwards to make the customer happy. But this was just a "take it or leave it" message. Without a choice, I'll leave it. i wanted to love this, I was super open-minded to love it. At the end of the day, I am not wimp, but ran into a level of heat heat might damage my mouth. Darn!More

Mai Thai has a very attractive and comfortable interior. The food is delicious. There are, of course, many selections for vegetarians and vegans. We had 1) Pra Ram and 2) Drunken Noodle - sizable portions with plenty of fresh vegetables. We were even impressed by...the water they served - lightly flavored with fresh apple and orange slices. Prices were reasonable and our waitress was very friendly. Mai Thai is a winner in our book!More

My husband and I were checking out Thai restaurants to find a good one for our upcoming visit from my son who loves Thai food. Being neophytes ourselves, we were delighted to find an attractive Thai restaurant with patio dining, a very friendly and helpful...waiter, excellent food, nice decor, all of which we previously had researched on Trip Advisor :-) Tommy, our very gregarious waiter, provided us with color photo menus and a cool glass of apple-infused water which was most appreciated on this warm day. He was very patient with our lack of knowledge and proceeded to educate us about Thai food. Only one huge problem...everything looked so good, it was difficult to make a choice! My husband settled on Pad Thai, and I was intrigued with drunken noodles with chicken along with Thai iced tea. Somehow the word "delicious" is totally inadequate. The lunch included a cup of Tom Yum soup, the likes of which we have never tasted. It was so good that I could have made a meal of that alone. The seasonings in the broth were so perfectly blended that it gave us a taste sensation that we never have experienced before. The Pad Thai was excellent, and my drunken noodles were divine. Tommy even wrote a nice note on the bag that contained our "doggy bag" leftovers...a very nice gesture. It was a pleasant surprise to see an older building well kept and clean, including the restrooms. The patio dining would have been a nice choice had the weather been less warm. All in all, our dining experience was very pleasant. We are looking forward to introducing our son to Mai Thai, and also future visits to try other delights from their very comprehensive menu. Be sure to go to the Mai Thai on Belmont. Other restaurants have "Mai Thai" in their name, so don't be confused.More

Posting photos of food at time of service doesn't tell you how great the food really tastes. An empty plate photo speaks a thousand words! Excellent! Hint: I'f you are not experienced with Thai food, order mild or medium hot spice.
