There are no words to describe how lovely and special it was to spend our birthdays dining at Thistle. The meal was beautifully prepared — we had delicious rabbit rillette, impeccably cooked quail, and a rich flavorful rockfish — and the food was genuinely the...best we enjoyed during our time in Willamette Valley (and perhaps, anywhere), accompanied by tasty cocktails and a well-selected wine list. On top of the incomparable food, Patrick’s warmth, kindness, recommendations, and humor made the meal even more perfect. Unlike restaurants with endless choices, Thistle offers a short chalkboard menu, for the best — every item has been carefully perfected and you can’t choose wrong. If you’re lucky enough to find a spot in their dining room during your stay in Willamette Valley, we can’t recommend it highly enough.More

Unique dining option. Friendly service. Recommend! Three ladies split appetizers, salad and entrees. Although portions are not large, everything was excellent!

Maybe the best meal of my life! I've eaten in Michelin restaurants that were less memorable. Patrick, the manager, was a delight. The rockfish was mind-blowing and the gnocchi was like eating clouds full of love. Just divine!

As you walk into the dimly lit restaurant be prepared for a blast of warm air even on a relatively cool 73 degree evening. No air conditioning and no ventilation. Standing fans at each table. Waiter most unfriendly but then again I would be too...if I had to stand at a table with sweat running down my face. Told to take a picture of the menu board upon entering as there is no QR code or paper menu. 6 appetizers and 4 mains. Normally, say on a cold winters night, I would order rabbit but in the dead of summer seems a bit heavy. Apparently there is no ice in the building either as water, served in chipped glasses, was room temperature and oysters missed a cool ice bed leaving them feeling the heat. The bread and fat was tasty. Salad, taking up a spot on the limited menu, needed more than 3 ingredients. Rockfish overcooked and needed salt. On a nice summer night no reason to eat here. Unfortunate.More

After a great meal here in 2020, we were excited to return, especially since the restaurant’s interior had re-opened. We had a very nice experience! The restaurant has a clean, simple interior with a ‘shabby chic’ quality. I think it fits with the vibe of...the town of McMinnville and the region. Very ‘farm to fork’ feel, in-line with our first experience. Small, focused menu, written on a chalkboard. Some appetizers/salads, a small set of mains, with focus on pasta and fish. And a few desserts. Plates on the smaller side, but flavors spot-in. Simple and fresh, not overly complex. Each thing we had was well-prepared; the beet salad was especially delicious, as was a strawberry shortcake dessert. Fish was perfectly cooked and well-matched with accompaniments. Service was warm and welcoming—very casual approach. Great conversation.More

Thistle is a do-not-miss dining experience in Oregon Wine Country. No matter how many times I go, it always blows my mind. Patrick and his crew offer up warm service and excellent dishes in McMinnville most intimate dining space. The vibe is just right. Over...a decade in and Thistle hasn’t lost its mojo!More

We dined here in 2018 and liked it enough to go back in our trip July 2022. What a difference. It’s run down and dirty. In fact, I’ve seen cleaner bathrooms at roadside gas stations. I’m talking downright filthy. Extremely limited menu and wine options...(choice of 3 very mediocre mains and 3 wines). As there are 2 of us we tried two mains and portions were small, overpriced and good but not great. Also charged for very ordinary bread. I think this place coasting on previous reputation. Needs a major revamp or throw in the towel There are many other superior restaurants in Willamette valley. Skip this oneMore

We booked months in advanced … traveled to McMinnville from California. We arrived at the restaurant to find a small note stating closed tonight for dinner due to extreme heat ….. the restaurant never reached out to us with their plans to close …. We...were extremely disappointed and had to scramble to find a place to eat at 8pm …. Warning !!! After reading reviews appears they have a habit of closing their door ….. with no warning …. Find another place to eat in McMinnville!!!!!!!More

Thistle is a restaurant that places all its bets on the cuisine it serves. Honestly, it is not quite a dump, it was comfortable. But it's the food that should be your focus here. Delicious, prepared with excellence and taste. Not overblown or pretentious. Presentation...was perfect as was the service.More

Call the restaurant. Make a reservation. Don't think twice. This was the best meal we had on a five day trip that included some very popular and well reviewed other restaurants in the area. The menu is focused and excellent. The wine program is a...lovely approach. Patrick's cocktails are as good as any I've had. Anywhere. When we went it was packed, on a Wednesday night. There are few tables, so definitely call ahead. If the rabbit is on the menu, order it!!!More

Hmmm...still trying to figure out this place. It seems to be the anti-restaurant restaurant. It was either purposely designed to look old and worn or it was just old and worn. I couldn't quite tell. I think the theme is farm to table in a...non-pretentious atmosphere, but in trying so hard to look down-to-earth, i think they miss the point entirely. A restaurant should also be comfortable, one should be able to read the menu, sit in comfortable chairs, eat reasonable portions, understand the menu without asking, etc. Portions are not entrees, everything is appetizer sized, very few bites to each meal. Perhaps that is intentional, like a Spanish Tapas restaurant. Was the cuisine good? yes it was very good, but I left feeling uninspired and still trying to figure out why.More

Wow! Fantastic food, service, and cocktails. Mixed greens salad an excellent start for 4 of us. Followed by bread with fat and then rabbit Rillete which was insanely good. We had three cocktails…the 1948, the Brooklyn and one I can’t remember and all were excellent,...as was the small but well curated wine list. The steak tartare was the best I’ve had, including in France and trendy Portland. The only issue is there wasn’t enough! The pork tenderloin was also stupidly good and the Invisible apple cake with layers of crepes and apples was just perfect. End result: perfect place for an excellent dinner with sophisticated cocktails and upscale and local food. Can hardly wait to go back!More

Thistle is an incredible restaurant with an equally incredible bar service. Everything here is done with extreme care and precision. Almost absurdly, when we come for wine weekends, we inevitably end up eating here twice, because it's just so head and shoulders above everything else...and there are so many different ways to go with the menu. We actually haven't been to Oregon since COVID, and honestly, it's been hard to imagine a trip without Thistle and we watch for it's re-opening. We wish them the best and look forward to a visit soon.More
