This was my first dining experience at Gubancs and will most likely be my last. The food was decent but was completely overshadowed by the horrible service. I have dined at many establishments throughout the years but never have I ever had such off-putting behavior...from a server. The first warning sign was when he introduced himself to the table. He came chomping on a piece of candy. It was so over exaggerated that my friend asked him what he was eating. He said it was a piece of candy. That was a bit strange because it was so exagerated the way he was eating it. It got worse. He asked me what I was drinking and when I told him, he sneered at me as if I made a bad choice. He did a few other minor strange things as well that left me and my friend just shaking our heads. When it was time to order, I requested the smaller portion of Fish and Chips and he replied with stating it would be the 6 pc fish. I asked about the smaller portion again and he; I think, was trying to joke and state that this would be the 5 ½ pc fish. At this point, I wasn’t really enjoying his behavior and tried to find the item on the menu. He pointed it out at which I confirmed that it would be the 4 pic. As he walked away and he turned to me and said that he didn’t speak English. I had enough at this point and told him he was listening to English either. At this point, I knew he was trying to push my buttons. When the food arrived, he left and my friend wanted another glass of wine but we were a bit hesitant to even ask for anything else as we just didn’t want to deal with his attitude. My friend tried asking another employee for a glass of wine and he referred us back to our server. The server brought her wine to her and asked me if I would like another beer. When I said “yes, please”, he retorted “Before I cut you off”. Huh? I just had one beer prior. This was such a rude and unnecessary comment. After the meal, he came back and asked us if we wanted our food to go. Only, he asked it in Spanish. I don’t speak or know much of the Spanish language but my friend was able to answer the question. At this point, I just didn't want to engage with him at all. I didn’t really want to tip him but both my friend and I did give him at least a 15% tip. I believe she gave him a 20% tip. I found out later that the meal automatically included an 18% into the meal charge, so essentially I paid a 36% tip on top of the terrible service. We couldn’t wait to get out of there. As we were leaving, I saw him go up to a table of four, pull out his lip balm and proceed to cover his lips exaggeratingly in front of the group where I believe one of the patrons commented on it while he continued to cover his lips with the lip balm. I can honestly say I have never had such a strange and odd experience anywhere like what we had here. I also feel completely ripped off with the 18% tip built into the meal but I guess that is my fault for not catching it and giving an additional tip to a server that absolutely did not deserve it. ****PLEASE REVIEW YOUR CHARGES ON YOUR BILL*****More

What a great place for dinner. Everything is fresh and feels homemade. I am so glad we found this restaurant. It made our trip!

This restaurant was recommended by a friend of my spouse. We chose it for a monthly get-together with very good, close friends. When we arrived, off-street parking was at a minimum, but we were fortunate some early diners were departing, so in the parking slot...we went. We approached the restaurant from the rear. The lot was in fit condition, so no concerns about potholes or bumps. The stairs are wide, with adequate stair rails. Upon entry to the venue, we were greeted very nicely by the host, and were seated within 2 minutes. This was quite pleasing. I observed the ambience of the venue to be very warm and welcoming. Soft colors and adequate lighting for a pleasant mood. Service was delayed, with no attendance for over 5 minutes. Eventually, someone brought small glasses of iced water. That person disappeared, and it was another 5+ minutes before the designated server came to the table. Instead of a greeting, and request for drink orders, the server said "Are you ready to order?" Feeling somewhat neglected and rushed, it was fortunate we were ready to order. Each diner at our table provided their order, and I explicitly stipulated we wished to start the evening with a selected appetizer. The server responded with "Yes, Sir," and left the tableside. NOTE: there was no repeat of the orders, for verification purposes. Our table of diners (3 total) engaged in "catch up" conversation, as we only connect once per month. NOTE: this was our first visit to this restaurant. Conversation went on and on, and I was concerned whether our orders were being prepared. After an extended period of time, our server came to our table, and indicated our entrees were ready to be served, but the kitchen overlooked the part of the order for the appetizer. The server offered to have the kitchen create the appetizer, which would have meant the entrees would have been the appetizers, and the appetizer would have been a communal meal. I elected to pass on the notion of the appetizer, and for our entrees to be served. I also sent a message, civilly but direct, that it was our first visit to the restaurant, and that I was very much NOT impressed. Of course, expected apologies were provided. I then hoped service would improve, based on a learning experience by restaurant staff. Our entrees were served, and each diner was pleased with the quantity and quality of their meals. We were also informed, because of the failure of the server and the kitchen, we were welcome to order desserts at no cost to us. The remainder of the evening was focused on our gathering, and I swallowed the lack of even adequate service. Time clicked on, and we requested take-home boxes for two leftover entrees and a portion of a desert. The server complied. Sadly, in spite of our stack of 3 boxes on our table, the server did not offer a bag - resulting in one diner carrying 3 boxes, in hopes of not having one or more of the boxes slipping and falling. The bill was split, by request of our companion. They paid with a credit card. I chose to pay cash for our portion of the bill. The amount due from me was $63.87, and I gave the server 4 $20 bills and 3 $1 bills. I asked for change. NOTE: this restaurant assesses an 18% "service fee" for the staff, regardless of the number of diners at a table. The server eventually returned to our table, and provided their version of what the returned fees would be. The amount should have been $19.13. The amount left by the server was $10.31 (2 $5 bills, a quarter, a nickel and a penny). Perhaps the server believed they were deserving of an additional $9.00 service fee - it was not determined, for I'd had enough poor service from this visit to even bring it up. Upon our departure, we walked by the kitchen serving window and down a hallway toward the Host Desk. No fewer than 3 staff passed us on our exit, and none gave the slightest bit of sendoff ("Thank You" or "Have a Nice Evening"). Things to know about me: 1) I Traveled the USA, and the World, for 4 decades, dining throughout States and Countries abounding; 2) I recognize that human beings are subject to failure at any time; 3) the restaurant in question could be poorly managed or short-staffed - I would not pretend to know one or the other; 4) I never judge a venue in the service industry (restaurant, hotel, et al) by one visit only. When I arrived home, it was my commitment to create this message promptly, while everything was fresh in my mind. I was sad, for I am a very frequent diner in all manner of venues/cuisines. I've long believed that quality service is the most critical aspect of a restaurant's experience. While the taste in my mouth from my food was pleasant, the taste in my mouth from the service experience was quite poor. You may wish to "test drive" this venue if/when you're in the Lake Oswego, Oregon area. I wish for you a pleasant, unblemished experience. I will patronize the venue again, very likely sometime soon. That experience will establish if the first visit was a "one-off," or one should not expect particularly adequate service. BTW: this restaurant states it has been in business for more than 40 years. Frankly, if a restaurant is going to have a mandatory service charge they should just raise the prices (18% in this case) and say "no tipping!". I will say though that the service and food have returned to pre-pandemic quality, and the restaurant was completely...packed with customers by 5:15 on Friday. So they are doing things mostly right.More

This has been our neighborhood go-to place. Perhaps due to the pandemic, quality is not as good. A few folks were dining outside, but we ordered takeout. The turkey, bacon, and avocado sandwich do not have the bacon so I drove back for it. The...lettuce was DOA, and so was the lettuce in the salad that I ordered. The gluten-free bread on the sandwich was half the size of an average bread slice, so the whole sandwich was basically a half sandwich. They should take example from their nearby market, Zupan's, which provides four slices of bread to make one whole sandwich in recognition that gluten-free bread is pretty small. The ribs were tough, not tender and the sauce- not at all pleasing. What a disappointment!More

Trying to support local businesses. But based on service with a mandatory 15% gratuity required you would at least expect them to find your order and have it ready with a 30 minute advance notice.. maybe this is one that should stay closed ..
