We'd had a rather tiring trip from the coast and chose this eatery because it wasn't far from our hotel.
It was adequate. For me, the best part was the pint of ale.
My pulled-pork BBQ was a reasonable facsimile of genuine, slow-cooked pork barbecue....I'm a native of south Georgia, the U.S. state not the country, with kith and kin throughout the Carolina low-country and Georgia where feuds have been known to divide families when it comes to pulled-pork barbecue recipes, methods, and sauces. The Ale House version simply tasted as though a pork roast had been cooked over fire, torn apart, and then smothered in their version of a barbecue sauce. Ergo, my choice of words—reasonable facsimile. Tasty though.
My spouse had a bowl of salmon chowder and a salad. Both were very good. She said the mixed greens were fresh and varied and the chowder "hearty" with excellent salmon.
The service was superb. The town sits astride the Pacific Crest Trail and we noticed several hikers who were apparently replenishing their carbs with gusto. During our supper I asked a young man (attired in hiking apparel) who was busing tables a question about the ale I was drinking. He replied that he didn't know the answer because he was a hiker working off his fare. He, however, did produce someone who answered my query.
The entire atmosphere was one of conviviality and reminded us of some of the taverns we've visited in Europe.More
