About
The Battleground Taproom and Mexican Kitchen specializes in traditional Mexican food -- street tacos, churros, pozole, tamales, mole, empanadas, and other dishes representative of several regions of Mexico. This is not TexMex -- every tortilla is handmade to order, the salsas made fresh daily. We also have a full bar serving a variety of cocktails and house margaritas and our own craft beer called Drink Your Values (DYV). DYV sales go to support organizations that are working on social, racial, and economic justice. Amazing Mexican food, cocktails, and craft beer.

Heard great things about this restaurant. Had to try! Upon arriving there was almost no parking due to the restaurant already being packed. We had a 30 min wait to be seated. After being seated we waited almost 10 more min for our server to even get drink orders and bring out water. He apologized and said there were only 2 servers waiting on the whole restaurant which was a surprise to me. He came back with drinks and said he would now take our appetizer order, by then we were so hungry we asked that he take appetizer and dinner order so that we could finally eat. We ordered the Queso fondido for the appetizer. This was delicious!! The only problem was the portion! For 9.00 it was only enough for one person. My husband and I shared but it was not a sharable appetizer. Disappointed in the price for what we got but the flavor was pot on. For dinner I ordered 2 pork tacos. They were very good but again tiny in size. We also tried the churros and a flight of beer. Food and drink are excellent here! However you may leave hungry and broke! LOL. Portions are small and prices are big. One taco is 3.50! Gone in 2 bites, no lie! My husband ate 4 and an appetizer. We will go back but we are hoping portions were so small because of the overwhelming turn out the owner came by and said they wern't expecting! Will wait for things to die down before heading back!

This restaurant located in a historic former neighborhood pub offers an excellent array of Mexican authentic dishes, using the freshest of local ingredients. All chips and tortillas are handmade daily onsite. We especially enjoyed the shrimp tacos and the elote dish (corn)--The desserts are to die for. Drinks and craft beer were delicious. Due to covid they are offering outdoor distanced seating under a canopy of beautiful trees or on a patio, and they also offer take-out and delivery. A real treat for locals and worth a trip from the Cleveland area, too. We shall return.

First time visit on Saturday. The owner, Rosi, and her husband Kirk, were welcoming and inviting as if we were guests in their home. We had wonderfully attentive service and our server was so knowledgeable about the food and drinks that she steered us in the right direction with both. The food was authentic, delicious, and beyond so so good. I recommend the fish taco, portabella taco, pork tamale, chips and guac, molcajetes, black beans, empanadas . . . heck I recommend it all! Be sure to end your meal with the churros. Amazing!

Don't waste your time or money. Tried this restaurant with my boyfriend based on the good reviews but it's far from it. Their is a limited food menu but plenty of alcohol choices that makes up 3/4 of the menu. The food is okay (and way over priced); the only truly delicious item was the flan. The tables outside have glasses set out with a capped water bottle. The glasses are ALREADY filled before you get there, and I doubt they change them after people leave. The water glasses had bugs floating in them... So I ordered a lemonade instead only to have a long, black hair tangled in the ice. They replaced the drink after I brought it to their attention... Then I was asked if I wanted a refill after being told it would be free. When we got the bill they charged for the lemonade and the refill. In any other restaurant they would apologize and comp the drink for the situation but they didn't. I have never been to a place that is so unsanitary considering the pandemic. I'm surprised they passed a health inspection. I would rather eat at Tacobell than eat here again. The food immediately made my boyfriend and I sick after an hour; I would not recommend eating here.

We were excited to try a newer Mexican restaurant-especially after reading so many great reviews so we headed to Kent to give The Battleground a try. Indoor seating is limited but fortunately there's plenty of outdoor seating available. Service was very good but the menu is and the product they serve and the restaurant's nickel and dime approach to pricing are a bit confusing. Guacamole- nice sized portion and full of flavor but chips were thin and lacked flavor. Shrimp taco was outstanding while the steak taco was just ok and keep in mind these are "street tacos" so the portions are small. The portion size for Carnitas on the other hand was very generous and the quality and flavor of the pork was very good. Accompanied by refried black beans (fantastic), more guacamole, green sauce (below average) and 3 corn tortillas I felt like something was missing. Maybe include more cheese and some fresh cilantro? My real issue was the $2 refill charge for a non alcoholic beverage and the $1 charge for extra tortillas. $70 + with tip for two ( $26 for the Carnitas) is definitely on the expensive side but I don't mind paying for excellent food like El Carnicero or Momocho but Battleground doesn't come close by any stretch of the imagination. Why these up charges? Why plate a generous amount of carnitas and only include 3 tortillas? Why charge an extra $2 for a coke you already paid $6 for? I thought about ordering the Pisole but $14? Are you kidding me???? Will we go back? Possibly for tacos but we're not running back anytime soon.

While we don't like to see three-star reviews, we appreciate the feedback here. We certainly don't want to nickel and dime customers. This is some constructive feedback and we agree you shouldn't be charged for additional tortillas with an entree like carnitas. We are going to make some changes based on this feedback. Please drop us a quick email at info@battlegroundbar.com as we would like to address this and provide a better experience on your next visit.

We went with friends on the third day that they were open. They were still ironing out a few kinks but handled it well. The menu was primarily ala carte and offered a few things not typical for a Mexican restaurant. A nice selection of beers and other drinks. The tacos were tasty but you will likely want more than one. The fish tacos were good as were the quesadillas. They are located in a former bar and they have done an excellent job of completely remodeling the place. Overall we had a good experience. This may not be for everyone but if you are looking for Mexican with a different twist, it may be for you.

The atmosphere is so comfortable and the decor is beautiful. Staff is friendly and owner is approachable and came around to the table to see how everything was going, She also gave us a little background on the dishes. Authentic Mexican food: dishes that are actually made in Mexico! Let me start with The Battleground Margarita ($9): delicious! I had the Carne Asada Dinner ($28) consisted of marinated flank steak, chimichurri sauce, grilled onions, black beans (best ever), rice and guacamole. My friend had the Pollo Tinga Tacos ($5.50 each) and said they were great. The food is fantastic! Battleground Taproom & Mexican Kitchen has a patio for warmer weather. Already told my friends about it. Very refreshing! It is in Kent but not in the crowded bustling area of town.

The Battleground is phenomenal. Truly a gem, a one-of-kind place that we are so lucky to have in Kent. My friends from New York and California all agree that the tacos they’ve had when I bring them here are on par with the best they’ve had in NYC and San Francisco. The staff is great, especially the owner, who always takes time to check on guests. I love the social justice mission. The beautiful and well-lit patio is fabulous when it’s warmer weather. Can’t wait for spring and summer here!

Great food and excellent service! 6 of us enjoyed dinner at The Battleground last night with an assortment of delicious food. Homemade salsas and chips, quac with pineapple, elote, shrimp tacos, jimaca salad and Molcajetes! We then completed our meal with 3 orders of churros! Everything was cooked and presented to perfection. Kudos to Rosi and The Battleground team!

Great tacos. A little pricey but well worth it. Nothing drowning in tomato sauce. In house made sauces and food. Each taco has its own unique flavor. Had the pork, beef and fish tacos. Guacamole was to die for. My daughter and son in law loved the margaritas, just right, not too sweet. Beautiful, cozy dining area and bar. The owner is so sweet. Will visit frequently for original, delicious and interesting food.

We drive 45 minutes to eat at this restaurant. This was our third visit and will not be our last. Food is fresh and so good. We had shrimp tacos, fish tacos, zucchini blossom taco special, carnitas, salmon with pumpkin seed mole, fundido, elote, guacamole, margaritas and flan. Everything was excellent.

Traditional Quality Mexican cuisine at affordable prices. Fast service. Was pleasently surprised, maybe the best Mexican food I've had north of Nogales, succulent not dry, definitely not TexMex. Will go back

Truly authentic Mexican cuisine, as enjoyed with 3 native Mexicans seated with me. The focus is on traditional plates as found in the interior of Mexico. Shortcuts are eschewed, so they make their own corn tortillas, and fry them for exquisite table chips and as the basis for several plates such as chilaquiles. The owners are on site dedicated and delightful. Craft beers at their tasting bar is an added plus.

My husband and I arrived at 620pm and the restaurant was about half full. We ordered within 5 min of arriving. t took 15 minutes to get our drinks and then we sat there for an hour with no food. We flagged down the waiter and asked about or food he said they must have lost our ticket. He said we could cancel the order and leave if we wanted. We chose to wait another 15 minutes and when our food arrived we were further disappointed. The tacos were cold and the tortillas were raw. The refried beans were bland. We left without eating. Will not be returning.

This is a very friendly Mexican restaurant. They brag about the freshness of all of the ingredients. They make the sauces fresh every day. We had the Queso Fundito, delicious melted cheese with chorizo and chips. I had the baha fish taco and the street corn. Delicious but very messy. One of my favorite things is they have their beer brewed for them and some of the proceeds go towards different issues. We had the Brown Ale which was very balanced and the Wheat beer which was a hazy yellow with great flavor and mild on hops. I’d have them both again. Their mixed drink menu also was tempting.
